| Out of all of these, I think only the robot has a shading style that really works for it, since the rest have a very cartoony feel, and the dim colors kind of take whatever life was there out of them. In some it's also just kind of hard to tell what is what due to the shading. The line art in a lot also feel kind of wonky, angles on some things are just kind of wrong like the UFO firing the beam. The space piece and the robot are probably the best, because as I said, the color choice and shading styles work well for those types of settings, but the rest it just looks and feels pretty strange on. And before you finish that old guy, you may want to look at that foot again. |

| I love the forest scene with the troll |
| Posted by: Dex Jul 3 2009, 09:53 PM |
| Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it~ I agree about the robot, thanks. You gotta remember though, that most of these are def. WIPs, so everything is subject to change, such as the old man's foot and the UFO. That's also the case with the wonky lineart, just sketching. Maybe it's from painting or something, but I normally end up choosing dimmer colors, haha. I'll try to brighten things up, any piece in general you think may need that? Thanks for the C+C, man. Nice to see you again...! |
| Posted by: Wolfgator Jul 3 2009, 10:12 PM |
| The space scene is perhaps the best because of the shading as Delmore said. It seems a lot more realistic and the colour choices seem better. I'm looking forward to the bridge though, i love the way you end up doing the water. Great to see you again! |

| loving the space scene |
| Posted by: The IT Jul 3 2009, 11:27 PM |
| Holy crap! Your work is awsome. |
| Posted by: Mokun Jul 4 2009, 04:44 PM |
| Great work, better then I remember. One critique I can make on the spot is that there seems something odd with the robot-space scenes legs: They seem weirdly straight. I know they are probably supposed to be straight and stiff like a robot but I think a little curviness wouldn't hurt. Again, good job! |
| Posted by: Fuzzy Jul 4 2009, 06:35 PM |
| Dex I love your cartoon scenes. Please make some more, maybe a more realistic scene! |
| Posted by: Dex Jul 4 2009, 06:49 PM |
| that's what the WIPs ones are pretty much :V also, normally it's cartoony people in realistic settings, i.e. trees, mountains, etc etc thanks for all the comments and stuffs |
| Posted by: Fez Jul 4 2009, 09:42 PM |
| I love the mountain climber. Even though it's a WIP, I love the simplicity of it as is. Very relaxing, the no-dithering is nice. Not that I don't like dithering, but a mix is nice sometimes. Love your work man, keep it up. |
| Posted by: Dex Jul 21 2009, 10:52 PM |
![]() the only updates worth updating also some random sprites, avatars, and a continuation of my oooooold cave story mario sprites, thought maybe if i finish a useable set someone might find a reason to use them, haha |
| Posted by: Mokun Jul 21 2009, 11:00 PM |
| i love the cave story one to death |

OKAY OKAY LARGE POST COMIN' IN~![]() Here's a digital doodle I did with drawr.net- a japanese art site with a built in art program. Very simple, very fun. ![]() Some watercolor thing that got an award in an art show or something. ![]() Interpretation of Moses from the Bible. ![]() A MONSTER OM NOM NOM RAWR (excuse the camera's blurriness, folks) ![]() A study of a head!~ Eyes and ears need work- these are all for practice, though, and practice makes perfect I guess! THEN SOME PIXELSTUFFS: ![]() this dump of WIPs and such was composed before I went on vacation this past week, so they haven't been updated much since. ALSO A CAVE STORY MARIO MOCKUP JUST FOR YOU GUYS but yeah that's what I've been up to. <3 |
| Posted by: Zero Kirby Aug 2 2009, 01:21 AM |
| That Moses is incredibly badass. |
| Posted by: Shaw Aug 2 2009, 06:50 AM |
| Very amazing stuff, dude. You handle pixels like you've done nothing else. May I ask what program you are using? |
| Posted by: The IT Aug 2 2009, 08:51 AM |
| So you're not doing project squire anymre? Anyways the stuff you have is awsome still, you need to make a tutorial for this stuff. |
| Posted by: Demonlemon Aug 2 2009, 11:18 AM |
| awesome stuff |
| Posted by: Fender Aug 2 2009, 11:46 AM |
| everything looks great as usual! especially loving the viking! |
| Posted by: Glukom Aug 2 2009, 01:52 PM |
| Looking good! Dex, you really gotta start spriting more things that can be used for a practical purpose, like sprite sheets and stuff. You have the talent, just imagine what would happen if you posted just a Mario, Luigi, and basic enemies sheet, people would go crazy over the possibilities. Not that the landscape stuff isn't good, of course, everything looks very nice overall c: |
| Posted by: cappy Aug 2 2009, 04:06 PM |
| These are so sweet! Did you use paint to sketch these? |
| Posted by: Dex Aug 2 2009, 09:16 PM |
| I use a combo of Promotion and Paint to make my pixel arts, traditionally draw the ... drawings =), and I used drawr.net for that doodle-painting. Also hey Shaw, haven't seen you around in forever. Then again I was gone for months! Thanks for all the comments you guys, I really appreciate it. Here's a few small updates-- WIPS: I do believe I'm almost finished with the Space scene, so I'd really enjoy comments and critique for final touches etc. ~ |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Aug 2 2009, 10:17 PM |
| You should focus more on line art since you use a lot of straight lines in areas where they are uneeded, and make some things have wonky proportions or odd perspectives which make little sense. You have been doing better on shading though. |
| Posted by: tonberry2k Aug 3 2009, 01:43 PM |
| You know, I forget how awesome you are at pixel art. Great job. |
| Posted by: Fuzzy Aug 3 2009, 02:28 PM | ||
I remember that viking head, and now it's turned into this? Astonishing! The snow scene is turning out nice too. The space one, well I dont exactly like it like I said back on Pixelation a few months ago but it's some great pixelling man. |

| Posted by: Dex Aug 3 2009, 09:45 PM |
| if you're always on mfgg it shouldn't be that hard to press "sign in" on AIM i mean if it's because someone on there bugs you or something just go invisible, haha anyways; changed the background and added some planets and fixed up some things, a few more updates and i'm finished |
| Posted by: Dex Aug 7 2009, 08:22 PM |
| hello, shanks and I shall be making a wonderful game and this is what it will possibly look like hurrah http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/45506.htm rates/favs appreciated!~ |
| Posted by: Glukom Aug 7 2009, 08:29 PM |
| now THAT looks awesome I hope that actually does become a game it looks really cool |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Aug 7 2009, 08:41 PM |
| Out of any of those, the top right looks the best since the background is good at least, not the pillars, but the mountains and clouds. You really need to pick new colors for red and orange, since I guess that is supposed to be a laser on the bottom right, but the colors are too faded to make it look like one, plus that little explosion effect looks pretty zany. The top left has some cool looking rocks, but they are tiling in a pretty gross manner. Some of the things on the top left also blend pretty closely with that background, although it could be much worse. Bottom left looks kind of okay, although the character pose looks a bit strange. |
| Posted by: Dex Aug 7 2009, 08:53 PM |
| thanks, I understand your concern with the laser, but it's a placeholder and I'm gonna be busy this weekend and just wanted to get something posted D: will work on the specified points once I have time though, thanks again |

| Posted by: Dex Sep 13 2009, 10:19 PM |
| ooooh, need to update this. aight then, we'll start with some traditional art THE PUPPETEER! Haha, done in spare, boredom time. Hand study at first. ![]() study of the Creation of Adam by Michelangelo. Used his as a ref, but not for everything! just a study of how he did his anatomical forms JESUS! my savior. Done as a remake of an old Jesus drawing and a facial study. THEEEEEN some pixelllllls: ![]() space one's basically finished. got lotsa work to do on the monster one. all WIPs. thanks for all the comments and such. |
| Posted by: Demonlemon Sep 13 2009, 10:23 PM |
| awesome traditional stuff, I love that bridge PA too |
| Posted by: Bacteriophage Sep 13 2009, 11:43 PM |
| let's see if I can just give some pointers for each one of these (you make it increasingly difficult to do so, though; I love how you've improved) Hand: The middle finger's nail should be a bit more off to the side, and the thumb should be quite a way's larger. If you're really interested in hand study there's whole books on it, or you could just get one of those wooden pose-able hand models at a ritzy art store. Adam: Good referential piece, faithfully followed. Now I recommend you take his anatomical style and apply it to a different pose. Jesus: Ears extend from roughly the top of the eye to the top of the upper lip, in terms of level. I also think, personally, that the beard should cover the chin more thickly. Bridge: The perspective on this piece comes off to me as odd: it's thick on the right but barely used on the left. The river, therefore, appears to go into nowhere behind the bridge while the path seems to get smaller rather than farther away. But I exaggerate. One easy thing you could do to improve this piece: replace the rocky texture with a brick one. I'm certain it'll make the bridge feel more defined and more three-dimensional. Forest wtf: The scenery is beautiful, and I really only have a few minor qualms.
Space wtf: Very impressive. Few things remain odd though.
Swamp wtf: I think this piece is too big for its own good. For the amount going on in it, I personally think it'd be better suited to a canvas the size of the other works here, or given a lot more shit going on.
Bear in mind: it's once in a blue moon that I give this much attention to anyone, ever. Your work truly blows me away and I had to think pretty hard to come up with anything pertinent. Grats on becoming better than me. Now KEEP FUCKING GOING, COMRADE |
| Posted by: Dex Sep 14 2009, 07:41 PM |
| Oh, wow, was really surprised to see all this, thank you SO much Phage. =) I really appreciate you taking out all this time to give this much insight, it's really wonderful! You're right in pretty much everything you say, and I'm definitely going to take such things into mind! Some things I'd actually applied before you said all this, so congrats on being psychic. I'll definitely work on everything you said, and I'll hit you up on MSN to discuss some of the stuff. Thanks so much <3 |

I've recently shifted gears from the art I'd been doing to do more life drawing and anatomy study, so I figured I'd get the great artists here to give me the lowdown on what's wrong and what's not. ![]() Sketch. Used a human reference and one from the Bridgman book. ![]() Man and Woman. Woman's butt is too big and she lacks the proper hips but it wasn't something I took the most time on :P ![]() face I made after sketching various geometric shapes ![]() funny 10 minute sketch I did for a church lesson, heh thanks ahead |

| Posted by: Dex Oct 13 2009, 04:16 PM |
| ilugato Here's some pixel arts I've been working on, in any case. The bridge scene remains untouched, but everything else is newer. ![]() ![]() Anyways, here's a load of drawings I've done recently. Some were studies of the bridgman book, others from real life, etc. Sorry for page crowding! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() oh, and this pastel drawing. an hour, color study, etc. |
| Posted by: Funky Oct 13 2009, 04:26 PM |
| Hello I like these sketches if you can handle some critique on the pixelarts: I don't like the bridge bridges don't look like that not even in cartoons I'm talking bout the side of it the top is ok |
| Posted by: Fuzzy Oct 13 2009, 05:22 PM | ||
Gotta admit, I love all these but this one, downs syndrome? |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 17 2009, 11:51 PM |
fuzzy: yup, his face needs some changings! i might fix it but it was just a sketch, so if i want to expand it any further i'll be sure to remember ![]() funky: it's more of a style thing, and at this point it'd be a real pain to fix it! thanks though!~ SO i did some acrylic painting today, first real attempts, i'm still getting used to the medium ![]() ![]() then here's an old man portrait in CHARCOAL, ref was on google, i'll try and find it later, it's late ![]() anatomy study: ![]() and then some WIP pixels!~ 1st one has a ref too, some old classic painter. i'll find it tomorrow |

| holy anal herpes, batman this stuff is pretty cool. |
| Posted by: Des Oct 18 2009, 01:56 PM |
i definitely suggest you learn to draw the body with shapes and proportions before copying the old artists watchign glenn vilppus anatomy videos helped me alot however you are definitely moving forward which is grand |
| Posted by: Fender Oct 18 2009, 02:07 PM |
| stuff looks great dex =] just keep working at the anatomy and i am sure you will get it down as good as your pixelart. speaking of which i love the C64 and the one with the glowing eyes. |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 18 2009, 06:51 PM |
| thanks you two. the only fix for anatomy is continuing to practice it, which i shall do. <3 |
| Posted by: Des Oct 18 2009, 08:03 PM |
| quick thing i forgot that measurement i used in my pic (a) is also the width of the head very useful and you of course you probably know all this stuff: once again dont follow to hard or your faces will all look the same I suggest you learn to draw the skull, its the most essential part of making your face look like a head and more 3 dimensional |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 18 2009, 09:50 PM |
| thanks for this although in this case it's not as useful because there was a reference i used and, as you said, it's not always the same for each person. but yeah, that info is very essential for head construction. people will surely find this useful. (BTW why don't we ever talk on msn? we have such similar usernames and art interests we should be the best of friends :V) |

| Posted by: Fez Oct 21 2009, 09:39 PM | ||
woah bro. Do more stuff with colour restrictions. That tree is beautiful. |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 22 2009, 02:59 PM |

| Posted by: YForce 0X Oct 22 2009, 03:52 PM |

| Posted by: Dex Oct 22 2009, 06:26 PM |
![]() acrylic painting i did tonight, the quality is terrible thanks to my CELL PHONE!!!!! it's my third attempt at painting, btw. but yeah thanks for all the comments guys <3 @YForce, i see what you mean, i'll try and fix it by my next update! =) |
| Posted by: Fuzzy Oct 22 2009, 06:32 PM | ||
Looks great, but I'd recommend using some thinner brushes to add more detail. |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 22 2009, 08:51 PM |
| i do have smaller brushes, but i need a *cough* stiffer *cough* one, it feels like i lose control with the smallest brush i have thanks though, i'm glad you like it. i can't wait till' art class. |
| Posted by: Fez Oct 22 2009, 08:57 PM |
| I'm not sure what the intent was, but it doesn't look like the man is actually looking at the eye. He appears to be looking at the left side of the frame. |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 22 2009, 09:11 PM |
hehe, that was the first intent, but further into production i found i hadn't angled the head enough and just let him peer off into the distance. there's supposed to be a weird connection between him having no eye and the all seeing eye in the sky, if you understand. ![]() surrealism, in a way. at least that's how ptoing put it. i can understand your view, haha, i'd probably view it that way too if i didn't explain it. hope this helps people understand what i was thinking during the process |
| Posted by: Des Oct 22 2009, 09:36 PM | ||
eye socket is too forward and you have bags on the eye socket, it should be in the eye socket, on the round ball part of the eye, not the socket itself but still pretty bitchin bg |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 23 2009, 03:06 PM |
| ah you're absolutely right, the eye socket is too far forward, my mistake. and yeah i see what you mean, i really overlooked that part of the painting D: but thanks for the advice and such, i really appreciate it. glad you like it =) |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 26 2009, 07:58 PM |
![]() ![]() two more acrylic paintings, my phone camera is being gay so no drawings. it's making them blurred and such. i can't wait to get a real camera. but anyways, yeah, i bought some good oil paints this weekend so i should try them out sooner or later ;D |

| Great, it's nice to see someone doing traditional art sometimes. What kinds of materials do you use? (What grade pencil, kneaded eraser, paper blender?) |
| Posted by: Ludwig22 Oct 30 2009, 10:22 PM |
| Great! You should do a representation in drawing of the Trojan War! That would be pretty awesome. |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 31 2009, 10:42 AM | ||
thanks =) i used an HB pencil and a regular #2 pencil for those drawings. i use a kneaded eraser at some points, and i mainly use my finger to blend, which involves me washing it off a lot!!! i used acrylics for the paintings up there, btw! thanks you two. |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 31 2009, 06:36 PM |
painting i did today. i forgot to paint a pumpkin for halloween tho :c like always, acrylics, cell phone quality *which sucks* |

| yup, i need a camera ;( |
| Posted by: Ludwig22 Oct 31 2009, 09:18 PM |
| Nonetheless, a very interesting concept. I notice a lot of your recent art has been based around nudity. Anything you'd like to tell us? |
| Posted by: Dex Oct 31 2009, 09:33 PM |
| well, i've been studying the old masters (da vinci, Michaelangelo, raphael, delacroix, rubens, etc.) and one of the key points in artwork (well, some forms at least) is appreciation and understanding of the human body. human anatomy comes into play when drawing any form of human, whether it be cartoony or realistic, so understanding such gives you a broader understanding. learning the way the human body works and reacts gives you more knowledge as to how to put the human body in perspective and give it life. basically, i want to get fairly good at human anatomy (nude) to be able to draw people with clothes and be able to give the proper folds and creases as to where the body creates them. so no, i'm definitely not gay. hope that clears the air. |
| Posted by: Zero Kirby Oct 31 2009, 11:24 PM |
| Not bad at all, mon amis. |
| Posted by: Rage Nov 1 2009, 01:37 AM | ||
glad to see someone else here who actually thinks like this :V I've been studying human anatomy for the past 7 or so months (thanks to fine folk like Glen Vilppu, Andrew Loomis, George Bridgman, etc.) and its really making an overall impact on my drawing ability and how I see various subjects. It's even helping me develop my cartoony artwork further to have a much more solid foundation than before. I've seen quite a bit of folks who are convinced that human/animal anatomy and life drawing won't help them at all with things like cartoons since they aren't using "exact human proportions" or going for "ultra-realism". While in most cases you don't have to go for that, you still need a good understanding of structure, form/volume, movement, etc., if you want a style that stands out and is appealing to the eye, and studying the human figure is probably the best way to achieve this. Once you have a solid grasp of the figure and how it works, you can meld it into any way you see fit and make some solid designs. If you don't want to study it and just want draw for fun, that's fine. But if you wanna take your art to the next level, knowledge human figure is practically a must in my book. At any rate you got some pretty awesome paintings and pixel art here Dex. I still gotta hit up the pixels again mahself, but I've been too tied up trying to get my regular drawing up to snap with all of this studying. |

| we couldn't sprite existing characters!!!!!! ): and alright i'll try and fix it =) edit: update |
| Posted by: ChaosEmerl Nov 2 2009, 07:54 PM |
| Yeah, the perspective is a little off. I would raise the right side of the moustache (his left side) by a pixel or two. And something about the nose on that side seems odd as well. I'd raise that a bit too, if possible. |
| Posted by: Dex Nov 3 2009, 03:27 PM |
| alright i'll try and fix it =) |
