| Congrats to shymouse for winning the last compo, he has instructed me to create Compo #156 since hes busy. "The Super Mario Bros quietly stroll through their mushroom infested park, the peace gave a harmonic tune. As they strode into the pond area they hear a loud screech. Whats that? Music? Slayer?! OH GOD COVER YOUR EARS SUPER MARIO BROS!" I this compo you are to sprite a mock-up of your own super mario game, the twist is however to base it on your favorite song or a song you find interesting, the song doesn't have to be related to Super Mario or to Nintendo itself. The song you choose will be the base for your mock-up, try to use the lyrics, genre, and speed of the song to create a perfect scene. On the other hand you can totally redesign a character in the mario series based on the song. Requirements in this compo are: -A 200x150 mininum size for the mock-up, it can however be much bigger if you wish. -No more than 32 colors. -Try and be creative. Entries are due Feb. 11th |

The way you described it is a bit confusing for me. So are we to make a mock up based on the vibe what our favorite song gives off? Like a fast pace metal song could be a final boss? Also, your avatar makes my compute slooow dooown. |

| Knock it off people. If he hasn't changed it by now, he obviously isn't going to, so why not stop complaining and just get started. It's not that hard, Listen to your favorite song, and imagine a situation in a Mario game where that song could be used, then sprite that situation. If it's a sad song, sprite a game over screen with a little mario ghost, if its an actiony theme, sprite Mario fighting bowser. Instead of making 1 sprite, you are making a bunch that you throw together to make a fake screen shot. Seriously, Stop whining already. EDIT-You can get rid of the cheese, as I've thrown out all the "whine". |

Thats an interesting idea. Depending on what kind of song it is, the course could range from a simple snowy village to a blazing volcano. |

| 32 colors? That seems a little strict considering most good Mario sprites have 16 colors. These sprite competitions seem to be straying farther and farther from the main idea, the one with the Yoshi transformations was the last one true to the title, IMO. |

The theme of this comp is to make a a fake screen shot. That screen shot is made up of custom sprites. You want to do a comp where you make custome single sprites? Well then, have at it. |

Really? Just share palettes and colours. Also, a good sprite utilizies the least colours but still conveys shading and shape. I like the current flow of the contests myself. Doing 'Rap is a Man's Soul' or 'Libera me from Hell.' Heck ya, DRILLZ |

So doesn't that mean we must post the music with it because then we don't really need to listen to some music and just make anything. |

I believe that you have to make a scene from a game that fits the theme of your favorite song. From what I can tell it doesn't even have to make sense to the Mario world. It just has to show a relation to the song. For example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXhPsNQeweA The begining sounds sad, almost like someone wants help, but it doesn't have your average "sad" feel. It has more of a climactic sound to it, so it would be someone who usualy wouldn't ask for help, so I decided to pin that as Bowser. The next thing that stuck out is that it jumps stright into a fast pace fight theme. This would mean that Bowser, or someone, would need to start a fight amidst pleeing for help, thats when I came up with the idea htat Bowser could be possesed, but fighting it. The last part was comming up with who possesed him, and for that, I wen with the person who the song is for, 02, and badda bing, my theme was born. |

 the backgrounds sucks and it's 160x144 because GameBoy resolution. Yes I know there's some weird size limit in place but I think GameBoy sized mockups should be acceptable. but seriously the background really does suck and it ended up deviating a bit too much from the original tune, so http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEcnoWlPRFw&feature=related to match it up with I suppose. but meh |

 I'm tired of this and I hate doing backgrounds. Anyways. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXhPsNQeweA&feature=channel_page starts off sad, like someone needs help, but they are reluctant to ask, so I pictured Bowser asking for help. It then picks up at a sudden boss like pace. I decided that if Bowser were to be asking for help, and then attack, it should be against his will, so I decided to have him possesed by 02 (since it's his song and Dark Matter takes over people). And I added Luigi being held like that cuz it's funny... The overall song had a floaty "space" feel imo. |

| The background isn't too good... The colors should be darker and less saturated, to give it more of an appearence of being far away. And I'm never a big fan of dithering. Overall though, it's pretty good. |

Ya I kinda suck with backgrounds but Ill try to work with it a bit. and on the dithering, I wanted to try something different to that's what I tried. It also isn't exact dithering, just a form of it. And flamedragon, try adding more objects or platforms to yours. It might help somewhat. A form of dithering is still dithering It mostly hurts on the stem of the mushroom platform, where it doesn't even look like shading. And I'd make the background less saturated and darker, especially on the blue part |
