time for something simple

user posted image

Why yes, this sprite competition is gonna be based on our lovable little torpedo ted! Looks like this one's gonna be a piece of cake!

Anyway, these are the rules:
- 10 colors maximum
- Try to be creative on this one. It looks like only one animation can be done with this mario character, but you can always make more than one, maybe based on different direction and perspective!

All entries are due in a week, as always. Good luck.

I don't know if it's part of the style or what, but those have hardly any shading on them.

I guess I'll call this an M&L style, though I can't decide which one... It seems too detailed to be an MLSS, but not enough to be MLPiT or MLRPG3... but here it is anyway. Oh, and I guess it should be flipped if you're going traditional ML-styled battle system.

Sprite Comp rules say that entries have to be sprites, and not the type of pixel art outside the classification of sprites. I'm pretty sure animations are also required.

But if he animated some parts of it, then my best guess is that it would qualify. I'm not the authority, though.

Your entries in past competitions were allowed because the current rules weren't in place then - in fact, there weren't really any defined general rules back then, although there were for Drawing Comps. Stuff changed while you were gone, and people eventually decided that Sprite Comps were supposed to contain sprites.

Here are the rules, straight from the Vault:

http://archive.mfgg.net/index.php?showtopic=189442

Also don't pay attention to that very recent competition that was strictly ABOUT non-sprite pixel art; that comp subject was in flagrant violation of the rules and should not have been chosen at all (but it was basically too late to change it when that point was brought up). It should not be considered precedent.

EDIT: But this might all be a moot point, since there's a good chance your current entry (quoted above in this post) does qualify now that it has an animation in it.

headslap.gif The rule makes perfect sense. Sprite Competitions are for sprites. This debate has been done before countless times, and never has there been an actually good argument for acceptance of non-sprites in these comps... because there can be no good argument for it.

And good job not noticing that he added a much more detailed animation anyway, so his entry is undoubtedly legitimate. So this discussion has become quite unnecessary.

I'm sick and fucking tired of this debate coming up time after time, after it should have been put to rest LONG ago. I and various other people have spent effort in the past explaining why Sprite Comps should be about sprites, and each time someone complains about it again as if no one had said jack shit previously, it feels like everything went to waste.

It goes against common sense to complain about sticking to the obvious purpose of Sprite Comps, and conflict is created for no good reason. That's reason enough there to be annoyed with such complaints.

As long as people new to these comps keep coming along, this debate will be brought up.

The fact is, these are unimportant sprite compotitions on an internet forum. We don't need to be incredibly strict with the rules. If it's made with pixels and isn't ten feet tall, it should fine.

Posted by: Grant Mar 6 2009, 10:51 PM
Well, I do admit I overreacted.

I still don't think people should try to fight for the "right" to bend the basic rules or concepts of competitions, but I'll be calmer about this sort of thing in future.

It's used in a way that makes it game-worthy. I'd call it a sprite.

A front on bullet bill, no matter how animated, is more like a pixel art because I can't see it being applied to a game in anything more than a cut scene. Just my opinion.

Could possibly, in theory, be worked into a title screen.

Idk, it may be somewhat borderline in concept, but I'd advise people to accept it as within the bounds of the rules. Desgardes was away from the boards for a while and wasn't familiar with the newer rules, plus the entry is very good and does have an animation.

Posted by: Thingy Mar 8 2009, 05:40 AM

Guys guys! His pixelart is awesome and stuff, and that Metal Slug boss looks like pixelart, but the difference is that the Metal Slug boss can get used in a game. The bullet bill is pixelart and can only get used for title screens. Look at the competition rules.

Aren't you all just angry that his entry was pixel art to begin with, then you tell him to add animation to make it sprite worthy, which he does do, then you still try to penalize him. Stop changing your definition of sprite because your mad that his entry blows a lot of peoples out of the water.

There are games that use front facing enemies, Pokemon is one, The Mother series does the same as well. They are still considered sprites, so don't go saying his can't be used in any way. You're the ones who are being stubborn.

Des, your entry looks like it'd be good for an avatar, or on the of title screen of a minigame.

It's pixelart, but might as well make it an elligible piece because you actually took my word and made an effort to animate it. Next time try to make sprites, because I doubt anybody else will qualify your entry as elligible (hypothetically speaking).

Now everybody just stop arguing about this.

I think people just like to find loopholes in the rules. When people say "make a mario game sprite" they mean side on, small and animated. For a Mario game. If they were to specify "make a pokemon battle pose sprite" they'd know it had to be front on or something.

I think people just like to find loopholes in the rules. When people say "make a mario game sprite" they mean side on, small and animated. For a Mario game. If they were to specify "make a pokemon battle pose sprite" they'd know it had to be front on or something.

well arent you the creativity police

what about mario rpg seven stars

what about MLSS

what about thinking out thinking out of the goddamn box

your sig names you well; very boring

EDIT: heres my new entry dont worry it follows all the rules!

Best sprite compo I've seen since #152. Actually, only decent one since #152 and best one since #145 (Buzzy Beetles)
