| Congrats to Jazz who made it on #2 and the runner-ups Solink, Croshi and Ndsfreak. Once again, thanks for your votes guys. I didn't think I could win the previous comp. so I had to come up with an good idea quick. I've decided on BACKGROUNDS, since there are too less custom Mario-related bg's out there (on the internet). Yeah, this comp. has been done ages before by Duckboy. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS COMP PRESS ALT+F4 THANKS Please stick to the rules: -NO old work -NO edits -NO castle interiors -your backgrounds HAVE to loop, horizontally, vertically or both. -parallax is allowed -you have to make 2 or more then 2 bg's, since there's this rule with the frames. -your backgrounds can be animated -color limit? Well, don't use too much colors, like shading with photoshop. -GRADIENTS ARE OK FOR THE SKY -the size can be from 200x200 to 512x512. Example: 320x480. -KEEP THEM USEFUL -ONLY sprite locations that have been seen in previous Mario games -DON'T MAKE UP LOCATIONS LIKE "TEC 2 ROOM" OR "THE CORE OF EARTH" -You CAN add stuff like leaves for a forest BG For some inspiration, you can sprite grassy hills, waterfalls, mountains, volcanos, beaches, forests, snowworlds etc. http://mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb¶m=01&c=1&o=&filter=3.11 for some examples. Comp ends in two weeks, on 15th of April. |

Thanks! Don't enter then! |
| Posted by: Luigis #1 Apr 1 2009, 01:31 PM |
| I may have an idea, but Im not sure if Im going to be around a computer all that much. |
| Posted by: Glukom Apr 1 2009, 01:53 PM |
| Alright, I know you said to leave if you don't likt the idea, but backgrounds? Really? If you want to go for something original, try to look for an obscure character or group of characters. Backgrounds are just... boring. |
| Posted by: Jazz Apr 1 2009, 02:11 PM |
| so why havent we done something from say Super paper mario or M&LRPG3? hell have we even sprited anything from M&LPIT at all? |
| Posted by: Shyguy Grey Apr 1 2009, 02:14 PM |
| This is pretty cool. Maybe we could get some backgrounds for the CFP out of this. |
| Posted by: Slash Apr 1 2009, 05:13 PM |
| Sounds good enough. BG had been one then hardest most annoying thing for me to sprite, yet I'm goin to enter this comp with atleast 5 BGs.(I dare myself to do it ;p) |
| Posted by: Ndsfreak Apr 1 2009, 05:24 PM |
![]() this is wip btw |
| Posted by: kremling Apr 1 2009, 08:39 PM | ||
hahaha |
| Posted by: cappy Apr 1 2009, 09:03 PM |
| I'm in. |
| Posted by: Des Apr 1 2009, 10:05 PM |
| Now when you say backgrounds, are we talking the farthest back screen, or what mario actually walks on and interacts with? |
| Posted by: Flamedragon Apr 1 2009, 10:09 PM |
| What are the odds.. I was making a background today for one of my games. And.. I really don't know what to make a background out of since mostly all the backgrounds in the games was basically the sky. |
| Posted by: Omnomlicous Apr 1 2009, 10:37 PM | ||
the furthest back screen oh and by the way, I know thers's no castle backgrounds allowed but what about ghost house backgrounds. And who doesn't love illplaced italics? |
| Posted by: jdaster64 Apr 2 2009, 05:54 PM |
| Cool idea, I think you can de-"smurf" the text now, though. It's kind of distracting... |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 3 2009, 02:51 AM | ||
Just the backgrounds, no tiles and stuff. The background, however, can be tiled. |
| Posted by: Mr. Bird Apr 3 2009, 07:48 AM | ||
I'm gonna have to agree here. I don't think i'll be in this one |
| Posted by: Peardian Apr 3 2009, 08:41 AM |
| Sounds like a good idea. I won't be entering, but still, good idea. Though, could you change the max size restriction from 500x500 to 512x512? That's the size that many Mario backgrounds are. (Fun fact: YI backgrounds are 512x1024, but that's rather large to fill up :P) |
| Posted by: Jazz Apr 3 2009, 11:07 AM |
| well this compo is rather exciting! only two WIP and its been 2 days! |
| Posted by: MONEYMAN Apr 3 2009, 07:01 PM |
| I guess Ill enter. Nothing better to do. Edit: A WIP of my first BG: |
| Posted by: Redux Apr 3 2009, 07:02 PM |
| Was hoping to enter another one but I don't think backgrounds are for me. I miss the days of "everyone sprite a goomba" ;_; |
| Posted by: Segatendo Apr 3 2009, 07:18 PM |
| I'm entering |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 4 2009, 08:52 AM | ||
It's time for something new Dry Bones for example has been a theme over 3 times now And you can't deny that fangames need original backgrounds |
| Posted by: DJ Coco Apr 4 2009, 03:37 PM |
| This comp is actually pretty cool cause there are far too less custom bgs. But I won't enter cause i can't sprite |
| Posted by: Arch Ninji Apr 4 2009, 03:55 PM |
| Can I aleast use gradients for the sky part? |
| Posted by: Flamedragon Apr 4 2009, 04:13 PM |
![]() Did I do it right..? |

| Posted by: Jazz Apr 4 2009, 05:23 PM | ||
You tell us its time for something new despite the fact this compo has already been done.... you had a load of choices to pick. espeically those from the RPG's which have been nengelected alot lately. |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 4 2009, 08:01 PM |
| We need to have at least 2 backgrounds? man, this is gonna be epic. |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 4 2009, 11:03 PM |
![]() progress. |
| Posted by: CaptainSyrup Apr 4 2009, 11:58 PM |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My entries. At least I can say I tried. |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 5 2009, 07:32 AM |
| ANSWERS: Gradients for the sky are ok. Size will be changed to 512x512. @ everyone who entered: Thanks. @ everyone who's like fffffffffffffffff: this is my comp. If you don't like it don't enter!? |
| Posted by: Clutch Apr 5 2009, 09:05 AM | ||
I don't get it. Is there some rule that compo entries have to have animation frames or some such? If so I don't see why we couldn't just make one background that has an animation. It's been done (lightning striking, clouds moving, stars twinkling, water flowing, fire burning, etc). |
| Posted by: Bacteriophage Apr 5 2009, 09:19 AM |
| Question: can the two "different" backgrounds be parallax scrolls? |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 5 2009, 03:52 PM |
| You said don't make up places. Could I do gold-land place? or is that a no-no? |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 5 2009, 05:53 PM |
| @ Clutch: Yeah, read the rules @ Bacterioo: Yes @ Fez: No-no (Not double negative) |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 5 2009, 07:05 PM |
![]() +1 background obtained! +1 appreciation for background makers obtained! |
| Posted by: CeeY Apr 5 2009, 10:13 PM | ||
I love the concept, but the trees could use some work. Get rid of some of the pillowshading, and establish a single lightsource. |
| Posted by: Wolfgator Apr 6 2009, 01:30 AM |
My schorching entry... |
| Posted by: Fuzzy Apr 6 2009, 06:00 AM |
| Wolf's seems to be most in the mario style, but with the gradient can we really call it a background? It seems you have many layers going on in there. |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 6 2009, 06:45 AM | ||
Gradients for the sky are ok. |
| Posted by: Segatendo Apr 6 2009, 05:21 PM |
One of my background entries![]() Nice background Wolfgator |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 6 2009, 08:04 PM | ||
I actually quite like this because of its simplicity. I have 2 complaints though. 1, the clouds are just diamonds. Try making them bigger, round them out, and shade them a bit. The other thing is that usually (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a background expert) there is are no ground tiles on backgrounds, asit makes it look unnatural if placed in a game. |
| Posted by: Bacteriophage Apr 6 2009, 08:42 PM | ||
The background he copied does, as do a few others. |
| Posted by: jdaster64 Apr 6 2009, 09:04 PM |
| Wolfgator, segatendo, and Fez's all have that SMB3 feel, as of now I'd be voting for all three w/o a doubt. I might enter, not sure. After all, I've still got a week. |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 6 2009, 09:49 PM |
Is attempts to catch peoples attention,![]() or ![]() Which one is better? I need to know which one to put the finishing touches and colour change on. Yes I realize I posted this in my topic, but the more opinions the better. EDIT: Funky, I realize you won't get this for a while, Can I do sewers? or is that too castle-esk? |
| Posted by: kremling Apr 6 2009, 10:01 PM | ||
I like the first one better, the second one looks a little too rough. |
| Posted by: Segatendo Apr 6 2009, 10:09 PM |
Are the clouds better? |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 7 2009, 03:51 PM | ||
Sewers HAVE been in SMAS So it'd be useful, do it |
| Posted by: Jazz Apr 7 2009, 06:05 PM |
| I like how you extended the compo because of the lackluster entries. |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 7 2009, 07:12 PM |
![]() Opinions? Also Funky, I will. |
| Posted by: jdaster64 Apr 8 2009, 12:48 PM |
| #1 for SURE. Much more background-y palette. |
| Posted by: Ultramario Apr 8 2009, 02:34 PM | ||
Yes. |
| Posted by: Ndsfreak Apr 8 2009, 03:07 PM |
| I dropped out, just so everyone knows. |
| Posted by: MONEYMAN Apr 8 2009, 03:36 PM |
| Me too. |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 8 2009, 04:18 PM | ||
wtf I never did It's set to two weeks since I've created it, I don't shit you |
| Posted by: Wolfgator Apr 8 2009, 05:47 PM |
Thanks for the comments, and i have two backgrounds now. |
| Posted by: Omnomlicous Apr 8 2009, 05:56 PM |
| I'll ask again because I don't think anyone responded, Are ghost house backgrounds allowed? |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 8 2009, 06:14 PM | ||
OF COURSE! Read tho rules, ghost houses have been in mario games, so the bg's would be useful. |
| Posted by: Omnomlicous Apr 8 2009, 06:27 PM | ||
Ok thank you. I wasn't sure if those might qualify as castle backgrounds or not, but that's just because I overthink everthing. |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 9 2009, 06:04 PM |
dd-oonee... |
| Posted by: Clutch Apr 9 2009, 06:05 PM |
| Also, I'm curious as to the reasoning behind "NO castle interiors". |
| Posted by: Flamedragon Apr 9 2009, 07:35 PM |
Done![]() |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 9 2009, 07:56 PM |
| cool, looks like everyone's finishing their entries. I love your flameragon. |
| Posted by: mirror Apr 9 2009, 08:05 PM |
![]() Just something I did really quickly, not my best, but not my worst. |
| Posted by: Flamedragon Apr 10 2009, 02:54 AM | ||
Thanks, but yours is way better. |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 10 2009, 07:28 AM | ||
It's because this has been a theme before. Plus you could just make a brick texture and that's it. |
| Posted by: jdaster64 Apr 10 2009, 08:59 AM |
| Wow, if that's not your best work, mirror, it's still amazing. |
| Posted by: mirror Apr 10 2009, 07:02 PM | ||
Thanks, but I only did do that in an hour. |
| Posted by: Segatendo Apr 10 2009, 09:29 PM |
My second background |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 10 2009, 10:03 PM | ||
Ahh, shucks. thanks. I do love the style you have yours in though, just sayin'. |
| Posted by: Bacteriophage Apr 10 2009, 11:11 PM | ||
It looks like you copied that one SMW background but removed the shading. |
| Posted by: Segatendo Apr 10 2009, 11:23 PM | ||
It is suppose to be that SMW background, but notice the difference. I don't know how I forgot to put shading on the hills. No copy and paste from that picture was used on mine. |
| Posted by: Razz Apr 10 2009, 11:43 PM | ||||
that's great.
be a bit more creative, it looks really bland. add some shading too -- without shading the BG looks really dull and uninteresting. |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Apr 11 2009, 08:50 AM | ||
You could at least add a bit more. Not many people are actually going to vote for a simpler SMW background, IMO. |
| Posted by: DJ Coco Apr 11 2009, 02:49 PM |
| Also why is that cloud in the front behind the hill =V? |
| Posted by: Clutch Apr 11 2009, 04:19 PM | ||
The second point is pretty moot as it would make for a lousy entry and there've been far more extravagant castle BGs, but I understand the first. |
| Posted by: Segatendo Apr 11 2009, 05:00 PM |
Anything else that needs to be fixed? |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Apr 11 2009, 06:32 PM | ||
Getting rid of that gradiance shading you put on it would be nice. It also appears to have been rushed, as it's fairly inconsistent. |
| Posted by: Segatendo Apr 11 2009, 08:12 PM | ||
When you say gradiance shading do you mean the lighter side of the hills? Because I'm not very sure what gradiance means. |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Apr 12 2009, 12:36 AM | ||
Gradiance shading is basically using a whole bunch of shades of a single color, going from lightest to darkest in some kind of direction, be it left-to-right, up-to-down, or inside-to-outside. It looks very unnatural. From what I see, you used around 7-9 different shades of blue on the hills, which is way too much, considering the hills aren't that big, and the amount of actual shading is very minimal. At most, you should only need 1-4 shades for a color. |
| Posted by: Wolfgator Apr 13 2009, 03:43 AM | ||
I really am loving that! |
| Posted by: Segatendo Apr 13 2009, 12:08 PM |
| Okay, thanks Soiyeruda I actually thought of that after my post but I just wanted to make sure what it was. Edit: Since I don't want to double post I'll just edit this one Update: - less gradiance used - tried to fix up the shading a bit so it doesn't look so messy |
| Posted by: mirror Apr 13 2009, 08:06 PM |
Final Entry:![]() ![]() Just a quick note, they're not in the same style as eachother. Also, just to let everyone know, the space one is Star Haven in PM64/Chapter 4 in SPM. The volcano one is World 8, final level in NSMB. |
| Posted by: Flamedragon Apr 15 2009, 01:24 AM |
| Re-Done I made the second background to loop in all areas. ![]() |
| Posted by: jdaster64 Apr 15 2009, 08:36 AM |
| Comp officially ends in one hour... |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 15 2009, 08:45 AM |
Well then, here we go:![]() I did one more. They're not in the same style either, I was trying out new ones. Good luck everyone!! |
| Posted by: Fez Apr 15 2009, 09:44 AM |
| AAnnd... were done. Comp is now over. I believe we go straight to final voting, because we only have 5 entries. Could someone make the topic? I have to go... |
| Posted by: Funky Apr 15 2009, 11:27 AM | ||
No there are 6 sooo Still, let's do the final voting. |
