Welcome to the MFGG Smiley competition. Our old smileys have served us faithfully, but it's time to see what else the community can come up with.

We're looking for a new set of emoticons for the new board, with a strong emphasis on expression. We know a lot of you will create beautiful smileys, but it's no good if you can't tell the difference between what half the smileys are trying to convey.

Your smileys must be between 16x16 and 22x22 pixels (inclusive, 20x20 or less preferred for base size) in size.
Your smileys should be Mario-themed, but they do not have to be Mario's head.

You must create smileys for the following expressions:

The following smileys are optional, but you are encouraged to make as many as you can. Some of them may end up being redundant when translated to your set, so don't bother with them if that's the case.

* You may go a little beyond the size restriction if you make a soveryhappy icon.

The competition will last one week from the time of this post. Once the competition ends, we will do a top 5 voting as with normal sprite competitions.

Once the top 5 sets are picked, the winner will be chosen from those sets by a panel vote of the mod team. We reserve the right to fall back onto the old Mario smileys if we are not happy with any of the new sets.

Sprite competition badges will still be awarded based on a popular vote. The winner of the popular vote and panel vote will both additionally receive a forum event badge.

I put these smileys in separate images. The smileys go in the same order as the ones on the first post. As well as the optional ones. I've done the devious face, the shifty face, and soveryhappy.

Used the original's palette, it isn't "good" by most spriter's standards but it gets the job done very well for these emoticons.

Didn't do SVH, nothing can replace the original.

I like these. I actually think the SVH on this one looks more SVH. The SVH on the others always looked like mario's head with a jaw cut off and then a black body with red feet.

It's technically valid, but actually it would be better if you can work in a baseline of 20x20, and use a couple extra pixels if you need them for some of the expressions.

That's the direction I'm going. If I can manage, I'm going to try to make every single icon a different character. (Mario's just the generic smiling one, for those wondering.)

I think I'm going to add "Extreme emotion" versions. Those being smilies of different characters showing emotions stronger than the Mario version. For example, Bowser = very mad, Peach = very happy, Luigi = very surprised, and so on.

A few minutes ago I actually made an edit of one of your smilies to look like one of the edits I did of Dex's a while ago. That said smilie was actually based off a smilie Lufa made long ago but now I'm just rumbling on

I'd personally prefer the majority of the smilies to be Mario, and only specific ones that fit better with some characters to be those characters, like a scared Luigi, or a raging Bowser.

When you said "Extreme emotion" versions for the other characters I really thought you were going to go all EXTREEEM with them...

Another suggestion I have is I think the other character smilies should be just a tad larger. They all look like mini versions of themselves next to the size of the Mario heads.

And once again, SP's are also looking great so far. Maybe one of those can be an "Extreme emotion" too if he dosn't get 1st place and Grey's do.

...not that the comp is already in the bag for anyone. I'm just hypothetically speaking here.

Update! I added a little more contrast to make the emotions clearer, and I've also done a few more for other characters. Some of the "extra" ones probably won't appear in the final set as a few will look quite similar to others, but I plan to do most. Bowser's still a pain to work with, so the set will mostly consist of Mario, Luigi, & Peach.

Yeah, I noticed the similarities a while back, so it seemed like a natural choice. It was also influenced by the fact that the badges are from Paper Mario, so it made sense for the smilies to also be from Paper Mario. I see that Kritter had a similar idea, as well...
