| What a great theme MCG40 had, and it produced some really cool games! I suggest checking them out! Good work, guys :cool: Now onto #41, the theme is Music Pick some music, any music. Create a level/game/whatever based on the theme that the music conveys. You have until the end of November. Good luck, all! |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 5 2008, 03:21 PM |
| Oh hey, how convenient, since I just got a good music game method working in MMF2 that uses the song's BPM. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 5 2008, 03:29 PM |
| Totally entering this! |
| Posted by: Keyser Soze Nov 5 2008, 03:31 PM |
| Cool idea, I'm in. |
| Posted by: Morrad Nov 5 2008, 03:43 PM |
| Um, wouldn't it be illegal to put copyrighted music into a game? I mean, fangames are illegal themselves but I feel like this is pushing it. |
| Posted by: Thingy Nov 5 2008, 03:44 PM |
| Can we make the music ourselves? |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 5 2008, 03:47 PM | ||
Fangames aren't illegal unless you're selling them for profit, or of course if Nintendo steps in themselves and demands for you to stop, as it is their intellectual properties that you are using. Nintendo is well aware of MFGG though, and they don't really mind. Using official music would be a concern, but that's honestly only if the authors of the music you had used find their way to it, or if the RIAA gets the heads up about it. There are plenty of sites that have music that are not bound down by any regulations so you can freely use them. |

| I'd had some great idea (and sprites) but I can't program. If anybody would like to team up with me, please pm me! |
| Posted by: Littlink Nov 5 2008, 03:50 PM | ||||
You don't have to if you don't want to.
Sure! |
| Posted by: Morrad Nov 5 2008, 03:56 PM | ||
I'm a decent programmer. I would love to help out. |
| Posted by: Thingy Nov 5 2008, 04:18 PM |
| I'll help you, funky, I am short of ideas. |
| Posted by: Fender Nov 5 2008, 04:40 PM |
| awww yeah, cool theme, i made a ddr styled game for the last music comp, but im glad its getting ruled out in this one. |
| Posted by: Morrad Nov 5 2008, 04:44 PM |
| Wait, so can you use only one song? |
| Posted by: Keyser Soze Nov 5 2008, 04:46 PM |
| Mine will only last like 3 something minutes in order to fit with the song. Thats cool right? |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Nov 5 2008, 04:57 PM |
| wait, NO rhythm-based games? damn |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Nov 5 2008, 04:57 PM |
| I'll be doing this idea (in case anyone else plans to make such a thing): Basically, you control something (that, I haven't decided), and it's environment changes as you find different musical notes. When you touch musical notes, the stage will take on a different appearance, the music will change along with it, and even the enemies will change to suite the music, also hving different attack patterns and skills. This idea is only applicable if the music count can exceed one, so can it? |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 5 2008, 04:59 PM |
| Soiyeruda, that's a pretty common musical gameplay, so you can't really put "dips" on it. |
| Posted by: Luigis #1 Nov 5 2008, 05:03 PM |
| I CALL SAFETY DANCE!!!!! |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Nov 5 2008, 05:08 PM | ||
"dibs" Anyways, you sure? The topic says "Find music, make a game that suits the music". Basically, that could imply that any game can be made with this topic. There's infinite other possibilities than my idea. They could make a bunch of levels, each with its own theme. They could make some Mortal Combat game where an endless hoarde of tough enemies surround Mario. Get some Britney Speares music and have Peach seduce her way through monsters. When the music abruptly ends, everything suddenly gets easier. Whatever the case, there's more ideas than mine. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 5 2008, 05:10 PM |
| yeah but you can't put dibs on a gameplay it's some silly idea you got running |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Nov 5 2008, 05:15 PM | ||
I've done it before and people have acknowledged it. Since I started doing Minigame Competitions, I've usually done that, and no one has bugged me about it. People have said "Aaawww! I wanted that idea" but they learn to find a new one. In any case, this silly gameplay idea has an 80% chance to become a game. It's the same thing with drawing competitions. I put dibs on a drawing I want to do to ensure I get my idea, and not appear like I'm stealing someone else's idea. |
| Posted by: Fez Nov 5 2008, 06:29 PM |
| cool idea! might take a stab at it. Sticky please |
| Posted by: Elyk Nov 5 2008, 06:44 PM |
| oh boy, this is going to take some creativity |
| Posted by: Luigis #1 Nov 5 2008, 09:23 PM |
| Safety dance wont work so I'm going to use super tramp dont worry in the credits i will use the correct credit to super tramp.(if I do that I can use there songs right?) |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 5 2008, 09:25 PM | ||
Oh well F this then. What is a music game without any rhythm behind the gameplay? You're basically asking for any type of game now BESIDES music games, despite the title. |
| Posted by: Fender Nov 5 2008, 09:55 PM | ||
im pretty sure he just means press-button-when-image-falls-into-slot games like DDR/GuitarHero |
| Posted by: Ndsfreak Nov 5 2008, 10:10 PM |
| I have an idea for this. Anyone can use it if they want. Some sacred song that is used to do something has to be played to do something (it would also be the background music). Unfortunatly, several of the sacred notes have been scattered along, so it would be missing whatever note that it was (be it A, B, C#, D, or whatever). At the end of a level (or world or something), there would be a labeled musical note. When you touched the note, that note would be used in the background music of the game. You would continue gathering the notes, until the song is completed. Then you would decide what happens. |
| Posted by: Black Boo Nov 5 2008, 10:15 PM | ||
I sense some Rick Astley. (But I'm not doing it.) |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Nov 5 2008, 10:16 PM | ||||
Nope, this is what he means. |
| Posted by: OniLink10 Nov 5 2008, 10:39 PM |
| Someone enter a Rick-Roll in this Competition. I dare you. >:) |
| Posted by: Black Boo Nov 5 2008, 10:43 PM |
| Wow...Odd theme here... Oni, I may, or may not. I'm short on ideas... |
| Posted by: Littlink Nov 6 2008, 01:22 PM | ||||
oh geez that's a mistake Sorry guys, it should be fixed now. 8( |
| Posted by: Hohoo Nov 6 2008, 01:25 PM |
| If the theme is music, why can't music be a part of gameplay then? |
| Posted by: Strong Nov 6 2008, 04:10 PM |
| I'm making a simple platformer based on Brawl's version of Dr. Mario's Chill theme, and whenever the music changes styles the stage background and enemies will, too. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 6 2008, 04:44 PM | ||
Because that only makes sense. |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Nov 6 2008, 04:55 PM | ||
Here's what the theme is I think: The Music is REQUIRED to fit the environment you play it, and you can't just have a "click the button when it enters the hitbox" gameplay. However, aside from those setbacks, you have freedom everywhere else. You can still incorporate the music into your gameplay, its just that you need to be a bit more creative with it. DDR/Guitar Hero type games get somewhat repetitive and I'd barely call pressing-buttons-on-the-hitbox gameplay. Just forget the whole DDR thing. The point is that your music fits the environment, which gives you much freedom to do whatever. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 6 2008, 05:04 PM | ||
Essentially, your game must have music. Gameplay cannot focus around the music, it can't be rhythmic or anything, your game just happens to have music. |
| Posted by: Elyk Nov 6 2008, 05:14 PM |
| I think he wants you to set the mood with music. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 6 2008, 05:15 PM | ||
So essentially yes, have a game with music. A mood can be set no matter what you do really, so there's no limitations with this one besides not sticking to rhythmic gameplay at all, and that your game must include music. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 6 2008, 05:19 PM | ||
Gameplay can be anything music, just not something too equal to Guitar Hero or DDR. Get over it. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 6 2008, 05:23 PM | ||
He said before he edited it recently and made it even more vague that ANY rhythmic gameplay is not allowed. From what he has left there, essentially seems like the same deal, the mood is set by music, gameplay can't incorporate anything rhythmic, so not truly a music game. I'll "get over it" when it becomes clear what he will allow and not allow with this one, because the theme makes no sense at the moment. |
| Posted by: Littlink Nov 6 2008, 05:42 PM |
| You know no one's forcing you to take part in this! |
| Posted by: Keyser Soze Nov 6 2008, 05:43 PM | ||
I am... Don't move Delmore, I swear I'll pull the damn trigger. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 6 2008, 05:49 PM | ||
Keyser, I honestly wanted to, but it isn't a real music game competition! Don't shoot, please! |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 6 2008, 05:54 PM |
| Uh yeah I just figured that you were complaining because your current project doesn't fit the criteria. Might have been a bit harsh there. Sorry about that. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 6 2008, 05:58 PM | ||
I wasn't really even using that for this competition, I was going to have rhythmic gameplay though, but I can't do that now. |
| Posted by: YForce 0X Nov 6 2008, 06:14 PM | ||
this just made me not enter |
| Posted by: Fez Nov 6 2008, 08:04 PM |
| Geez, this topic sounded so easy at first. Im nowhere closer to an idea than before. |
| Posted by: Strong Nov 6 2008, 08:43 PM |
| You can have rythmic gameplay, people. You just can't make just a DDR knock-off. You have to have something more than that. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 6 2008, 10:07 PM | ||
He said already you can't in his early post though, and the response he gave me makes it seem otherwise here! |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Nov 7 2008, 01:38 AM | ||
DIBS ON DDR o wait |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 7 2008, 12:27 PM | ||
I'm pretty sure he means you can do anything music-based aslong as it isn't a DDR/Guitar Hero-ripoff. I'll tell him to change it to make it more clear. |
| Posted by: Foshi Nov 7 2008, 12:44 PM |
| Sounds great, i may enter if i get ideas ...why no GH/DDR ripoffs |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 7 2008, 12:49 PM | ||
because they're cheap |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Nov 7 2008, 12:50 PM |
| I really don't get this comp. You know, when I usually make a level (yes, I suprisingly make levels first, then add music), I add a tune related to the level in some way. I feel like that this comp reverses it. A.K.A. FIRST you select the music you want, THEN you make the level, when it's normally FIRST you make the level, THEN add the music. That's not so music-related. And those "when music is happy, enemies dance. and when it's hard rock, enemies mosh" ideas aren't so much music-related. The comp idea isn't that bad, it's just the fact that you say we can't do music related stuff. It like saying this in a Mario-related comp: "You have to do a game based on Mario. No SMB2 Mario based games, thank you.". Rhythm games are like 80-90% of all music-related games. And even though you have a gigantic knowledge of MMF2 or GM, you probably still can't make, for example, a Vib Ribbon-styled game. |
| Posted by: Littlink Nov 7 2008, 01:48 PM | ||
Exactly, music first game second. |
| Posted by: Keyser Soze Nov 7 2008, 02:07 PM | ||
And boring... So yeah, I know we CAN make rhythm based games, but I can also make a game that really fits my song and has events that happen in relation to high and low points in the song correct? |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 7 2008, 02:13 PM | ||
sure, I don't see why not |
| Posted by: Littlink Nov 7 2008, 02:22 PM | ||
Go right ahead! Now see this is an example of a game that uses rhythm BUT isn't like a DDR/etc game. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 7 2008, 02:23 PM |
| I got the best idea for a game ever :] |
| Posted by: Black Boo Nov 7 2008, 05:56 PM |
| Easy Idea: You need to collect music notes to unlock doors, and the environment changes due to the environment. EASY. |
| Posted by: Gameboy Nov 7 2008, 07:06 PM | ||
wat? |
| Posted by: Hohoo Nov 8 2008, 01:04 PM | ||
Aah, now it makes sense to me. Just what I do when I make games. (And please limit those size tags.) |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Nov 8 2008, 01:21 PM | ||||
Are you going to enter? That would be awesome :>
|
| Posted by: Hohoo Nov 8 2008, 01:28 PM | ||
I am. Just have to find/make some trance music. I have an idea already and trance would fit so well in. I just can't make trance and desperately need somehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXelBexdbMg&fmt=18 EDIT: Littlink sent me a link to some. Now the hard part - programming and making/finding |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 10 2008, 05:28 PM |

| Posted by: Keyser Soze Nov 11 2008, 08:45 PM | ||
I love the "YES SIR!" Where'd you get that? Anyways, great game, my game now seems less likely to win. |
| Posted by: Frogjester Nov 12 2008, 02:57 PM | ||
Where's the ending man? Whenever I pass level 3 it just quits(it might be because my computer can't take it or something, but there was no lag). |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 13 2008, 12:54 PM | ||
yeah I should probably add one |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Nov 14 2008, 06:12 AM |
| My game is getting along nicely, graphics for the first level are about 80 % complete and the combo drum system is under serious work. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 30 2008, 04:44 AM |
| So this thing ends tomorrow, right? |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Nov 30 2008, 05:16 AM |
| My game is almost done. It's a standard Mario game, and there just so happens to be music in it. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Nov 30 2008, 05:48 AM | ||
Tomorrow? Shouldn't it end today? Isn't today the last day of November? |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Nov 30 2008, 07:12 AM | ||
Yes but the last day of November hasn't ended yet. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Nov 30 2008, 08:26 AM | ||
Well, yeah. I hope to get my motivation back so I can finish my lil' piece of rubber dog shit. |
| Posted by: Gig Nov 30 2008, 08:59 AM |
| Would love to enter, but... 1) Sucky game programming 2) Too late anyway Good luck to everyone else who is entering! X3 |

| Yeah today is the last day o' November. So finish up, polish clean and present yourselves BEFORE midnight whenever. Then top five voting, and finally the winner. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 1 2008, 01:14 AM | ||
Could you extend it for like a week? Isn't MechaBowser's game the only entry? |
| Posted by: Thingy Dec 1 2008, 02:57 AM |
| I have an entry, but it is just an engine with no music atm since I couldn't find any music and funky stopped talking to me and telling me what the game needs. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Dec 1 2008, 08:51 AM |
| Mine's the only entry? Haha oh wow. Yeah I don't think a week would help, but it would rather just push the misery a week further. I'd say a day or two extended. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 1 2008, 08:54 AM | ||
Let's say 4 days. That should be enough for me. Now we just need Littlink's Seal Of Approval. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Dec 1 2008, 05:02 PM |
| COMPETITION ENDS THE 3RD AT MIDNIGHT There. I settled it for him. |
| Posted by: Elyk Dec 1 2008, 05:08 PM |
| It was kind of confusing even after he explained it so... |
| Posted by: Gig Dec 1 2008, 05:19 PM |
| Hooray. MechaBowser wins. =P |
| Posted by: Littlink Dec 1 2008, 07:37 PM |
| This is hilarious. I wonder if this has ever happened before. Anyway, so if no one else is interested in an extension then MechaBowser wins by default. Good work, man! |
| Posted by: Elyk Dec 1 2008, 09:06 PM |
| so if I threw something together right now I would get second place? |
| Posted by: Black Boo Dec 1 2008, 10:04 PM |
| I may as well just post my piece of **** demo/engine test. fffffffff. I lost my jump drive and I don't have it on my laptop. I'm SOL. |
| Posted by: DR. Demon Lizardman Dec 1 2008, 10:09 PM |
| Aw, I was hoping for other entries, guess MechaBowser wins this round. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 2 2008, 12:53 AM |
| Here's my entry. http://www.sendspace.com/file/nidovr |

| Posted by: Thingy Dec 2 2008, 03:09 AM | ||
Holy... |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Dec 2 2008, 06:39 AM | ||
Even if it is, it has my vote! |
| Posted by: Guinea Dec 2 2008, 07:19 AM | ||
Annoying music and annoying game. Fits perfectly. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Dec 2 2008, 08:34 AM |
| I'll try to make an entry I guess. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 2 2008, 09:29 AM | ||
It was supposed to be serious, but I lazied out. I think it fits the criteria perfectly. It's small, as in a minigame, and it has "music " that fits perfectly to the levels. Well, yeah, it's a joke. A JOKE THATS GONNA WIN ME A BADGE LOLOLOL |
| Posted by: Hohoo Dec 2 2008, 09:34 AM | ||
"Correct the music noobs" |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 2 2008, 09:37 AM | ||
Damn Microsoft Sam and its shitty voice :< It's supposed to say |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Dec 2 2008, 10:21 AM |
| I'm pretty sure that Microsoft Sam isn't music unless he was a beatboxer |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 2 2008, 10:34 AM | ||
Should I add some background Windows noises in it? And he's supposed to beatbox. ptschhhsshh pschsshh |
| Posted by: Thingy Dec 2 2008, 11:05 AM |
| I'll just upload my engine, it may get higher than locoroo's if I find music. EDIT: It's mine and funky's entry EDIT2: I threw some music in there. It's just an engine, but here: EDIT3: Press space to begin. |
| Posted by: Guinea Dec 2 2008, 12:16 PM |
| Nice one, thingy. I once wanted to make such a game in which you switch between several Mario games. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Dec 2 2008, 12:22 PM |
| haha aw yeah, I like yours thingy. Especially the transition, which reminds me of broken glitched games. |
| Posted by: Thingy Dec 2 2008, 12:26 PM |
| It was Funky's idea, I just prgrammed it, then I couldn't get the music and I didn't know what to do next etc. EDIT: I wanted the SMB1 and 3 music, but I couldn't so I just threw in those Midis like an hour ago. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 2 2008, 01:08 PM |
| I would have wanted to make a game in which you play different levels like Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter and so on. But I procastrinated too much :< |

| Posted by: Littlink Dec 2 2008, 09:52 PM | ||
I don't get what I'm supposed to do. |
| Posted by: Elyk Dec 2 2008, 09:54 PM | ||
you're supposed to follow the music off the platforms |
| Posted by: Littlink Dec 2 2008, 09:55 PM |
| Well I got that but there's no instructions, stomping the goombas resets the music and everything is kinda empty. |
| Posted by: Elyk Dec 2 2008, 10:26 PM | ||
yeah I did it in an hour because I'm a loser :( |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 3 2008, 12:44 AM | ||
Can I win you? Pweeeese |
| Posted by: Black Boo Dec 3 2008, 12:19 PM |
| Beta I've been working on suckily. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 3 2008, 12:29 PM |
| Doesn't this end like already? |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Dec 3 2008, 02:02 PM | ||
Tonight US time. I'll make the topic so make no worries. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 3 2008, 02:06 PM | ||
Yay. How can one make a worry? |
| Posted by: Elyk Dec 3 2008, 02:23 PM | ||
what |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Dec 3 2008, 05:55 PM | ||
If anything it should just be extended for more entries, since there aren't enough here. |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Dec 4 2008, 12:14 AM | ||
Honestly I cant see more entries appear at all. Its been on for a month with only 1 entry on time, and it just feels like expanding the misery, really. We've got enough for a final voting now, and I think we should just move onwards to that. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 4 2008, 01:03 AM | ||
There has been 1 month of game-making time. What we have is 1 game, 1 "game" with 2 small levels, 1 beta, 1 level and a second game, I dunno. So it should just end nao. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Dec 4 2008, 04:39 AM | ||||
...didn't you ask for an extension before when there were barely any entries and the competition was already over? I dunno, it makes more sense to just extend it so there are at least a few entries rather than just dishing out free badges to the three people who just bothered to post something.
Like I said, seems like people just want easy badges here! |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 4 2008, 08:33 AM | ||
Giving 5 badges to 5 people is more than giving 1 badge to 1 person, am I right? There has been a month's worth of time to do something. If someone wanted to do something, they should have done it by now. Mecha, when are you going to start the final voting? |
| Posted by: Mecha the Slag Dec 4 2008, 10:08 AM | ||||
Now.
Yes to increase the number of entries from 1 to multiple. This is no excuse to just want an "easy" badge, but honestly, this has been going a month now and there weren't any entries in that time. @LocoRoo: Your game doesn't qualify as the competition's theme is music, yet yours contain no music at all. I already told this to you once. |
| Posted by: Ice_Hedgehog22 Dec 4 2008, 06:13 PM |
| So when it's one entry, that's a problem, when it's three, two not even being complete, this is fine? I'm sorry, but I don't see the point, but hey, you posted the topic immediately after you responded, so I guess you really want this one, I dunno. |
| Posted by: Kamikaze Dynamite Dec 4 2008, 07:31 PM |
| Oh good lord wrong topic |
