'Grats to Alex for getting runner-up, and Guinea+Funky for their third place.

The new theme is MARIO ON THE PHONE!

It's simple; develop a Mario game as it would/could appear on a mobile phone. There are few limitations, although I think most modern mobile phones surpass the colour limits etc..
so basically

RULES
200x200 screen size. Some phones have wider, some taller, but generally they're about 200x200. Keep the size that way, brothers! You can resize the window to 400x400 (or equal) if you want, but then all images in the game has to be resized as well!

Controls are limited to ARROW KEYS and ENTER. On a standard mobile phone, there's the directional keys and the middle "selection"/enter button. What I want is an effect that immitates this. I am not going to consider the allowance of the number keys (which would allow more than 1 selection button) because there are some phones (a little under 50%) that do not support this for applications.

Only MIDI music. Most mobile phones can't support mp3s, oggs or what else you people can produce. Keep the music to annoying, slow-loading midi files!

Keep it simple! This is actually more a guideline than a rule. Most mobile phones can't take the massive effects some people can produce, so keeping it simple should be a good guideline.


The competition ends the 13th of April, which should give you about 3 weeks.

I have an idea and sprites. But I don't know anything about programming, so if anyone wants to team up, I'd have everything (custom, new) ready and I'd like to make some levels. Who wants to share the (maybe) first place with me?

I have an interesting idea for this minigame comp, but I'd need to find someone to team up with, to make a basic static platform movement engine(I can't just edit one from MFGG due to the comp rules). I can't use the Platform Movement Object for reasons I don't want to spoil yet.

Then again, that would likely result in a three person team, someone doing the basic static platform movement, me doing the rest of the "programming" and concepts and such, and possibly Peardian doing level layouts. Is a three person team against the rules?

Oh, and what the color limits of older Cell Phones? It'd be nice to try and see if my idea would work in the limited colors or not, but I'm not sure what the limits of those old NES-esque phone games were.

Hmm ... this is going to be a bit difficult then, since I haven't found any sprites that would work in a 10x10 grid. Well, actually, I haven't found a lot of sprites that would work anyway, so I might have to sit this one out after all.

can we go over 200x200 if the outside isn't actually part of the real game? i want to have a frame of an actual cell phone on the outside of mine in order to help with ambiance.

Yes, you can do that. But the gameplay area has to be 200x200.

I believe it's been previously stated, arrows and enter. Not space, no numbers, just the 2. Or 5 if you're going to get technical.

Well I'm just making sure what it is, (thanks for pointing that out MegaTailzChao) because I know cell phone games have more controls than just arrow keys.

Since phones used to control games with the numpad.

Simple effects means no ultra-parallax-scrolling, 3d stuff or +1000 clrs.

Actually, the rules do not say anything about general sound effects. That rule only talks about music, hence the references to mp3 and ogg file formats.

No you can not.

Also, the player can always end the game by pressing the huge X (close) button on the window, y'know.

Wait on a second, shouldn't we use the key pad with 4 being left, 6 being righ,t 8 being up, 2 being down and 5 being the confirmation or action key? You know so that it ACTUALLY simulates a phone?

Update

Mario is 8 pixels tall
Tiles are 4x4

Game is about a lizard named bowser who takes a princess and you run through levels to go save her in a castle.

Its called "Mario"

Possible demo later tonight.

Question:
Can the screen be 200x200, but the actual playing space be smaller?
Oh and if I have a particle engine that is literally throwing out 2 or 3 pixels and draining their alpha as a dirt effect, and a similar thing for fire and splashes, is that okay?

Hey Mecha, how the hell should you be able to quit the game if you're not allowed to use the ESC Key? Then the "X" Button also won't work!! Have fun loosing all the lives to be able to return to the main menu and choose "Quit Game"

The game won't end in game maker. It only ends when you click on it when you let the player end the game with Escape!!

It's not my job to figure that out for you; it's yours.

How you end the application is irrelevant to me, but you can't use the escape key.

There are NO ways to avoid that. If you won't let us end the game with escape you can use your task manager!

very well, Game Maker users can have their game quit using escape. But no returning to menu, no popup box, just plain exit the executable.

I hope you enjo.... No! You HAVE TO enjoy it, because this game annoyed me SO much, i had so many problems with this game... So... enjoy^^

There shouldn't be any bugs, otherwise tell me.

1) You're breaking the size limitation rule by having the text on the lower part of the 'two screens' you got going in the intro
its fine that you have the phone in the actual game, but the intro breaks the rules

2) you're not using MIDIs. Its pretty clear that the music in the game aren't midis

The game is good though, keep it up!

1. If you move the text up to the top of the screen, it should be okay as the lower screen isn't being used then.

2. Oh, well they don't sound exactly midi-y. Did you convert them, by any chance?

If you hit enter just as you land on the ground, jump sound plays while you didn't jump.

I just added online highscore to our game, but to enter your name you need to use other keys than the arrow keys, but all mobile phones have some way to type text so I believe it should be allowed.

Also at what time does this end?

also Thingy your game gets really laggy after a while

Fixed.

And added checkpoints, press enter to save your position (Doesn't save after opening and closing, purposely), enemies stay dead, btw.

Also death sequence is glitchy, but it doesn't affect gameplay.

Just a guess, since it wasn't I who made the highscore table, but I think you'll have to unzip the files.

I should have known this earlier, i don't think i get to 2600 once more, I had so much luck, I fell on a bouncing ball, hit a fly guy and hit again a bouncing ball, but then it was over :P
