Click for details. The original post is below.

Congratulations to WiWa on getting Second Place, MechaBowser for getting third, and Homeroe, Alex and Mewizkuit for runners-up in the top 5 6!
edit: Rules have been expanded upon somewhat, hopefully they give a better idea on the rules. I kinda labeled it as no walking/running, but the focus is more around the control style or playstyle, rather than the actual concept of walking or running.
This time, the competition's theme is not about character or graphic restrictions or focus(not saying a lot of previous ones were or not).

Special Thanks to Peardian for the inspiration for this idea!
The rules of this competition are to make a minigame that requires you to use a form of movement other than traditional walking/running. You can use other forms of movement, such as hopping, grappling hooks, even flying/swimming are allowed, though they must control differently than standard platformer walking. So, you can't just strap a jet sprite on Mario's back and have it push him forward as he walks, but you can slap wings or flippers on him and have the player tap for each flap, have a stone statue that hops in a similar way, or go all Bionic Commando with him with a grappling hook... minus the ability to walk left and right normally, of course. You also can't cheat and, say, make a Tetris Attack game, saying "the cursor isn't walking!".

Do note that this is all for gameplay, walking that happens in cutscenes or the like doesn't count, though it might be awkward to see the player character restricted to jumping around, only to get up and walk to the next level and then go back to jumping.

To make things short:
-The game must feature a form of movement other than standard platformer walking/running/sprinting/etc. The movement must be something other than simply holding a button down to move continuously.
-NEW(ish) RULE: Other things like jumping and ducking are allowed of course, though some standard things, like climbing, might go too close into the standard hold left/right walking style, so try not to add that unless it's different. No automatic moving like Yoshi's Touch 'n Go or the Mario's Time Machine surf bits, either, unless it's, say, a conveyor belt, wind or other temporary obstacle moving the player.
-It must feature some form of platform style gameplay, no Tetris style puzzle games or whatnot.
-NEW RULE: Walking/running CAN be allowed only if it's done in a non-standard style, say, pressing a button per footstep, or pressing a button to do skips, which falls under the hopping idea.
-NEW(ish) RULE: While I mostly listed examples that involve simply tapping the button to hop or fly or for each step, that doesn't mean you can't use other forms of non-hold right to win movement. For example, slingshotting a character is a possible gameplay style if you want to think outside of the box.
-Only gameplay is restricted by the rules, cutscenes are free to have as much traditional style walking/running as they want.

I don't make competitions much, does a month sound good? That would make the competition end on...
July 18th, 2009, at midnight(GMT)!
Good luck with your entries, everyone!

Unless you have some cool twist to the standard surfing minigame style, automatic moving(like on a wave) isn't allowed.. I hope I'm not being too strict with this!

Moonwalking is also not allowed, unless, say, you had to press a button for each footstep, that's far enough away from standard movement... To be honest, now that I think about it, walking or running in non-standard ways is kinda okay, again as long as it's not the standard holding a direction to move style, but then it'd usually probably go into skipping territory, which goes away from the walking rule in the first place.

Mario Aerial Fighting Brawl!

Posted by: Toodles Jun 18 2009, 06:20 PM
I had and idea for a minigame a while back that would work for this theme. Maybe I'll dig that up and actually make it now...

Consider me entered!

Posted by: Someguy Jun 18 2009, 07:49 PM
After thinking for a bit, I decided to broaden the rules a little bit. The big changes are in red in the first post. I mainly added that fully automatic moving isn't really allowed even if it doesn't involve standard walking(sorry if this applies to your surfing idea, Black Boo), walking or running is allowed if it's done in a non-standard fashion that doesn't involve holding directional buttons.
For example, tapping a button for each footstep is allowed, though hopefully with an excuse better than Super Monotonous Bros.. I plan on doing an example of this possibility because I am unoriginal, and can't win my own competition anyway.

That's left/right arrow movement, though. :\ It's basically Luigi moving left and right and jumping, only with a different sprite.

Well, I would hate to decline this after you doing so much work... If you can change the way left/right movement is done a little. I don't want to be strict or take over your/anyone else's game, but maybe if you did something like(I hate to say the word again but) tapping for bursts of movement or such.

The falling isn't really a problem, it looks like it's mostly just the background doing the scrolling, and if not then it could slide by as part of things like jumping.

Sorry. When I first posted it I didn't think of how it might hamper any good ideas or the like...
QUOTE

If you mean like the whole Super Mario Galaxy style thing, it's fine as long as the control of the rolling object goes by the mentioned rules and isn't really something that would be standard controls except moving the ball rather than Mario.

Someguy, can our enemies walk?
Yeah, the rules only really apply to the player and the play style.

Well, a Line Rider Mario game would involve you controlling the lines, rather than the player, wouldn't it? Then again, kinda like the bouncy fat Luigi, I don't really think slopes and bouncing count as automatic moving and obviously not the standard control style, if you're going by what I'm thinking of at least.

I'm trying to be a bit more lenient than I was before to avoid taking the fun out of the competition, and because I'm liking a lot of these ideas and don't like saying no to them because of sticking to every single letter of my rules.

Well if holding right/left is all you do to move the bike left or right, that's not allowed. If you meant holding a button to drive with left/right being to do wheelies or whatever, that should be okay.

I dunno if this follows the rules exactly but...

you have to hold right and release it to move, and on the final stage you also need to press up and down to fly in 3 directions. Moving backwards is not possible because it just doesn't make sense with this style of game. Press Space on the title screen to start, click on the credits to end the game at the end. Kthanxbye.

Arrow keys change your direction, Up Arrow makes you bounce a small distance, Shift key make you bounce a bit farther, and holding the Control key while doing the latter makes you bounce very far.

I might actually enter this.

HOWEVER... I have a question:

My idea is powerups fall from the sky, giving you a different mode of mobility, however you'll move on your own.

Example:
Propeller suit takes you into the air, where you have to spam buttons to go up or down.
Blue shell makes you spin fast to the left automatically, you have to press a certain button to jump.

These buttons I am mentioning, switch to give the game more challenge. Of course, it tells you what button to press. Not pressing the said button in time, you die.

Would this be allowed?

Posted by: Someguy Jun 27 2009, 08:21 PM
I'm kinda worried about allowing the shell one after what I had disallowed earlier about "automatic movement", but at the same time having to do that to so many earlier makes me want to just say it's okay because it's a temporary powerup. Assuming that you don't just hold left and right to wander around before or while you have the powerups. If you do, then it wouldn't be allowed, no matter how much the powerups add to the standard controls.

In other words, moving left/right via traditional controls isn't allowed even with those powerups, but I'd let what you described of the example powerups by.

Posted by: Black Boo Jun 27 2009, 08:30 PM
Yoshbert, your controls annoy me. They're really hard to use.

Since this is the first minigame comp I've ever even THOUGHT about entering, I want to know if this is any good.

NOTE: Nothing happens after you get the blue shell.

EDIT: Forgot to ask, after playing this, does it pertain to all the compo's rules?

Posted by: Someguy Jun 28 2009, 01:36 AM
I'm going to say yes... though I hope later on you'll note whatever it is that says if Mario flies up or down, at this point in the beta I seem to do well until I end up flying straight into a Bullet Bill, and the key chosen doesn't seem to decide which way either. Then again maybe you intended for people to wait till there aren't any in the way at all before pushing, though I could see a possible unwinnable situation or two happening there.

Or maybe that part's just not finished yet.

Besides that, I did like what little I could play there. ph34r.gif

Well, I have managed to finish the stage. (You need about 620 points before the next powerup falls)

And I used a simple y position check to determine whether Mario goes up or down.
(If you're lower on the screen, you go up. However, if you're high enough, you go down.)

Maybe I'll change that system later, but for now it'll stay that way.

The problem is, I'm having some problems choosing enemies. They could be different guys, or they could be recolors of the player's allies, but I don't know which to choose...

It's only about half-done. It stops after the Wario chase. For controls, go to Help>About in the menu.

(Also, as a consolation to laptop users, you don't need the boulder tossing at all. You can just use Shift and Control.)

Posted by: Black Boo Jun 28 2009, 01:10 PM
The bike overheats way too quickly, and you tip over much too quickly too.

Posted by: RedEchidna Jun 29 2009, 09:46 AM
I was actually worried about those, myself. I had slowed down the bike's tipping back down, so I'll just undo that. I might be able to change how fast the bike overheats too.

Controls:
Up - Jump
Down - Ground Pound

You have 1 minute to stomp on Poison Mushrooms that are coming on the conveyor belt to earn points, but lose points if you stomp Super Mushrooms or you let Poison Mushrooms get away.

I kind of got lazy at the end with the presentation, but I just wanted it done. I realize I shouldn't worry about finishing a game two weeks early, but I tend to lose interest in games after a while. I'll probably update it eventually with a slightly better presentation.

I keep procrastinating, I need to get to work!

Posted by: RedEchidna Jul 2 2009, 11:07 AM
Updated my minigame. Nothing worth a redownload, but I added a couple of things to the presentation. (The end screen has a background and scrolling credits, and if you beat my current best time {38.57 seconds} the best time text turns gold.) Link is the same as above.

It's just a Tech Demo which shows how the game would work.
You have to travel beetween blue stars to reach a slingstar.
Each of the 5 galaxies will have 7 levels - 5 normal levels, followed by a boss level, and you can reach a secret level in one of the normal levels.

Story:
We don't know why, but some guy (hint) put a curse on Mario - he can't walk anymore.
He has to travel to the center of the universe to get the Star Rod - sadly, Bowser got it again.

Controls:
Y/Z - Jump
Click on a Blue Star - Activate a blue star

To Do:
Levels, duh
Sounds
A lightning beetween Mario and the activated blue star
Cutscenes

I hope I get 2 galaxies done until the deadline.

Progress on the game. The effect at "sucking" is now done (there was just a n00b mistake <_<") and the first goal is there!

Now a sling star is there, and 20 to 30 randomly placed starbits. Collect all star bits to unlock the sling star.
Almost all star bits can be collected, no matter where they are, but if you don't want to try stuff, just drag 'n' drop them to a new location. No worry, they won't be randomly placed in the done game.

very nice! I often get stuck in some peices of land though.
and maybe you could add a bit more to the game, instead of just floating around stars in order to collect stars kinda thing.

other than that I give this game a thumbs up!

Yeah, I try to fix this, but it's not this easy...

Also, it's just a demo... there will be way more objectives like killing all enemys, puzzles, and bosses.

Posted by: Shyguy Grey Jul 16 2009, 05:09 PM
K, heres the demo Black Boo and I made. We came up with a little story behind it on AIM that I'll add.

Story:
While taking a stroll one day, Luigi found a Magic Balloon that, unlike a normal Magic Balloon, controlled the balance of the world (or something). The only way for Luigi to get rid of it is to take it to a special altar, but it seems that someone has their eyes on it.

Controls:
Left/ Right- Tilt the world
Up/ Down- Super tilt (turns 45 degrees)
(Down is also used on warp pipes so timing can be tricky)
Space- Ultra tilt (180 degree turn)

I'm about to start double checking the entries to see if they fit the rules... as well as trying to remember when GMT is since I wanted to go by the same style as the last comp but forgot to check when midnight GMT is in my timezone. That might give you all a little more time for polishing... Actually, it would probably be easier for me to officially end the competition on midnight at my time, which gives about four hours after this post to finish up before the voting to see who gets in the top five, if I got things right.

If anyone needs an extension, though, be sure to say now, before it's too late!

Sorry to double post but...
TOP FIVE VOTING TIME
If I've made a mistake and forgotten an entry, or put an older version of your game up, or screwed up some other way, please tell me and I'll try and fix it!

If I've counted and gathered them right, we have 12 entries! You all must vote for which of these five will be in the finals. I'm not positive, but I believe two days from now should be good? Let's say around 48 hours from now, the 21st of July the 22nd of July I believe.

Allow me to interfere:

1(1): Flipiberke IIII
2(2): Fez III
2(3): TheSuperyoshi III
2(4): Mecha the Slag III
3(5): Shyguy Grey and Black Boo II
3(6): Bip II

4: Red Echidna I

Seems we have a Top 6. I figure I shouldn't delay it any longer, so we'll go with that.

So, you all must now vote for which of the top six(Flipiberke, Fez, TheSuperyoshi, Mecha the Slag, Shyguy Grey and Black Boo(who teamed up and count as one) or Bip) you think should win. One vote only, this time, of course, in case anyone new reads this. This time, for Final Voting, you have one day, so July 23rd is the end date for the competition. About 24 hours after this post, in case anyone gets confused by timezones like I do.

Also, quick thanks to Guinea for doing the pack.
