MFGG Message Boards: Archives > Minigame Competitions > Minigame Competition #51

Posted by: Yoshbert Oct 3 2009, 11:27 AM
Before we get started, I'd like to say congrats to Saturn for getting in second place, and Noone, Black Boo, Soiyeruda, and Fez for getting into the Fab Five... er, Six! And everyone else who entered, good job!

Now for the more important stuff, the theme. I had a little trouble thinking of one, tbh. Luckily, Fez PMed me an idea...

So, you might or might not have heard of Flipiberke's famous fangame, http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb¶m=02&c=2&id=6842. As the name implies, it's a remake of the classic YvsB minigame from Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game Boy Color. It had various add-ons and gimmicks and extra modes and all that jazz to make it look better than ever! Hey, speaking of minigame rehashes, do you know how many Mario Bros. remakes (Mario Bros. VS, Mario Bros. DX, etc) people are making here nowadays?

Even though the aforementioned examples were enhanced versions of their original forms, they still stuck to the main concept of the game. I'm saying all of this, because the theme for this compo is...

Minigame Remakes!

RULES:
- The minigames must be enhanced versions of existing minigames from the Mario universe (that means Yoshi and Wario are included), like Wanted (Super Mario 64 DS), or Mansion Patrol (Super Paper Mario), or even any of the Mario Party minigames.
- You can add as many new material to the minigames as you wish, but don't go overboard!
- Make the new content fresh, creative, and exciting. Not just something like a Mario Bros. clone with more enemies. Come on, you can do something better than that.
- Most of all, make sure that your revamped minigames has similar gameplay and objectives as the original.

NOTE: The deadline has been bumped up to October 23rd, so get your entries in before then.

And if anyone thinks this is a terrible idea, form an angry mob and go after Fez I will be very, very unhappy.

I'll do NSMB Multiplayer Minigame: Yoshi's Snowball Fight.

I just have to think about what to put in it. Online Mode? Singeplayer?

Posted by: Sergeant DeeY Oct 3 2009, 11:47 AM
Hmmm, sounds cool... I might enter!

Posted by: Thingy Oct 3 2009, 12:48 PM
This sounds cool, but I can't think of any minigames that don't suck.

Hopefully, MFGG 3.0 won't show up during the middle of this compo

It wouldn't be too hard to port the thread to new MFGG.

I'll maybe join. If I get time.

Oh boy, this sounds like it'll be interesting! Time to scrounge around for clever ideas~

Hmm...this could be interestig...

Maybe I'll try the Shell Slam minigame, That could be fun, though I'm not exactly sure what to add...it's just...simple.

*whips out DS to browse minigames*

Ooh maybe I'll do the Bob-omb Squad minigame...this will be fuuuuuuun...

Posted by: Pikax Oct 3 2009, 04:21 PM
Let's see if I can fit something in around my schoolwork this time.

EDIT: Nope, I don't think I will be able to, and I don't think I'll be able to make any more games until after Christmas.

Posted by: Soiyeruda Oct 3 2009, 05:48 PM
I'll go ahead and remake the Cardiators minigame from Mario Party 8 then. :S

(The one where players choose cards to damage each other. Obviously though, I'll try and make it far more interesting.)

Posted by: YForce 0X Oct 3 2009, 10:43 PM
I liked that one minigame from Yoshi's Island where you bounce the ball back and forth from Yoshi and Bandit.

I'll make it if I can.

Posted by: YoManRuLz Oct 4 2009, 10:15 AM
hmm...
possibly the one in nsmb, where you bounce 3 marios on shyguys...

p.s. Is a newer game with old school sprites "legal"?

Posted by: Miaxis Oct 4 2009, 02:37 PM
Would the boss minigames from Mario Party qualify? If yes, I'll probably enter.

Posted by: Black Boo Oct 4 2009, 02:50 PM
Hmm...either that or one of the minigames from ML:BIS, like the Jump Helmet game in the Challenge Node.

Posted by: mrmario Oct 4 2009, 02:59 PM
TOO LATE!

Yes, the MP boss minigames are allowed.

I think minigame compos are usually 3 weeks.

Posted by: Guinea Oct 6 2009, 01:45 AM
My suggestion for the deadline is to be so, that the next competition takes place after NCFC.
So when NCFC starts on October 26, the MGC has to end 3 days before, so the voting can be done aswell.
If that is a bit longer than usual, no problem. Maybe we get some even better games then smile.gif

Posted by: Pikax Oct 6 2009, 11:41 AM
OK, I'm gonna see if I can make a souped-up version of Mario's Slides from Super Mario 64 DS/Wario's Ladder from Wario: Master of Disguise.

Posted by: darkfool99 Oct 6 2009, 04:33 PM

Do you all think I should extend this?

Posted by: Mecha the Slag Oct 16 2009, 02:51 PM
Personally, no. If people can't keep a deadline, it's their fault. We shouldn't constantly postpone compos just because people expect it. They've got to learn the hard way.

To be fair though, two weeks is a bit shorter than usual. Still, I can agree it doesn't need to be extended for a week. At most, maybe 2-3 days.

The boring bit:

In a sense, I guess it's a bit boring because I picked an awkward minigame to remake to begin with.

The original minigame from Mario Party 8 (called Cardiators) was more or less, a matter of luck, in that whoever got the better cards would obviously win. You just select cards from a table, and watch the monster attack the other player. No true gameplay.

For the most part, my main intention with this was trying to actually set up an RPG-styled battle system, which required learning a new set of functions. The fact it even came out the way it did was a bit of an accomplishment to me. :S

But yeah, unless it's something like Alteil, I find most card games boring to begin with, so meh.

So yeah, no offense taken; just understand that I had to use some advanced GML to make it work.

Also I can't stay awake, I'll post the game tomorrow, which will be totally valid since nobody specified a time. All I saw was "tomorrow" so I'll assume that means any time during the day.

For the most part, most people don't actually vote until they've tried all available entries. Whether you're a new member or not isn't really an issue, so you shouldn't dwell on it, unless it's blatantly obvious that people are biasly voting for other entries simply because their creators are known to have experience.

In any case, out of respect for you, I'll give the game a try and give you my opinion on it.

EDIT: Tried it. sorta what Pikax said, it feels rushed. However, it shows that you do have some skill, so don't get too down about this.

It's short for Mario community fan-game convention. It's an online convention of Mario fan-games (that was kind of obvious by the name). Noobs need someone to explain this stuff. That's how stop they being noobs. Congratulations, you're not quite as much of a noob!

Actually, it's short for Nintendo Community Fangame Convention (hence NCFC, not MCFC).

Taken from the site:

QUOTE
The Nintendo Community Fangame Convention (NCFC) is an online amateur game convention. Game creators from various websites gather in a temporary community to share their games, discuss game design, and interface with other game making communities.

NCFC focuses on Nintendo fangamers - people who make games based on Nintendo franchises and properties. Participants work with all aspects of game design, ranging from programming to music and graphics. In addition to showcasing games, NCFC features a 24-hour radio program and a chat room filled with game design workshops, trivia contests, and other events.

This year's NCFC will be held from October 26th - 30th, 2009. If you want to showcase your projects or host a game design workshop, registration will open soon.

It was supposed to be, but i don't know how to vote, this is the first comp I've done. Can someone explain how this works?

The comp creator has to start a topic for voting.

And then you vote for one of the entrants in that topic by posting a username.

For instance, if you wanted to vote for my game Wario Golfing, you'd make a post saying mrmario.

We haven't even done top yet, so no topics until after that.

Plus I'm not done with mine yet.

Anyone who hasn't finish should take advantage of this extra time.

I don't gotta worry about my entry, at least.

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?xut1wtz5z2m an edited version. I've fixed some of the problems I overlooked before. I've also added a score system.

Not done but here, this is my final entry

It's glitchy, you get an error when you close it, and the AI sucks, oh well.

Gore warning and stuff

And lay off me I made it in like 3 hours

Yeah, It's been almost a week now.
If final voting should start now, here are the top five entrants:

Mecha the Slag - Game & Watch Turtle Bridge
Weston404 - Blooper Surfing
Soiyeruda - Cardiators
Darkfool99 - Sneak 'n Snore
Futureshock9 - Game & Watch Fire

Also are you allowed to vote for yourself in these?

QUOTE (FutureShock9 @ Oct 29 2009, 11:01 PM)
I do, I've been updating the standings after every vote.

At most, you should only really need to do it twice, as it gets redundant having to see an updated score count after every vote.

QUOTE

Also are you allowed to vote for yourself in these?

No. And I believe doing so would get you banned from these competitions as well.

Ok, then, I won't do these as often

And that's good to know so that I don't get banned from the compos.

Would somebody PLEASE make the final voting topic already, or I'll have to do it because I want to get the next one up and running.

EDIT: Screw it, Futureshock isn't on, and if you think about it it hardly matters WHO starts the voting topic.

So yeah, doing it now.
