So I've been playing copious amounts of Team Fortress 2 lately, and for the most part I think it's an awesome game. Really addicting, really fun. However, it's not perfect, so I thought I'd post what I think should be added/taken out and see if anyone else who's been playing agrees. So, for each class:

Scout: While the scout is good, I think they should have kept the old submachine gun instead of giving him that slow scatter gun. That being said, the scatter gun can be deadly in the right hands.

Soldier: I actually think soldiers can be a little imba sometimes, but their rocket jump kinda sucks now. It's hard to do, and you take quite a bit of damage from it (unless you're really good).

Pyro: These guys really need some buffing up. They're too fragile to do the role they're supposed to, which requires being like 5 ft away from your enemy. They need to give the pyro's flamethrower a LOT more range, maybe double what it is now. Also having them be invulnerable to flames would make sense, but isn't necessary.

Demoman: Pretty solid all around, no major complaints with these guys.

Heavy: Oh man, they need so much more ammo. They could easily use 300 to 350 rounds, 200 just isn't enough.

Engineer: Pretty imbalanced if you ask me. Sentry guns have way too much firepower, even at first level. Dispensers should give metal more slowly as well, otherwise you can just make a dispenser and you get a free level 3 sentry gun almost instantly. Their shotgun, while not all that great, could be taken away; they could probably do fine with just their pistol since they get their one hit killing spanners, which are cheap.

Medic: Although I haven't played them much, they seem pretty fine as far as balance goes. Syringe gun is funny.

Sniper: Again, I don't have much experience with these dudes, but they seem pretty good. Some kind of sensor to tell you when people are near you might be nice for them, since they are just spy bait.

Spy: This is the class I play most, by far. While I like them, they can be frustrating sometimes since friendly fire is almost always disabled, making it easy to pick out spies on your team by just shooting everyone you see. Their knife, while being a 1 hit kill from the back, is complete garbage from any other angle, and making it a little better might be a nice change, since the knife is what at least I use most of the time. Another idea I had was to make it so you could stab out of cloaking, but this would make it a little overpowered. Maybe make it so you can't stab out of disguise, and you move slower cloaked, or something. I dunno, they just seem to be lacking in certain situations. Then again, it's probably just personal bias. Still tons of fun to play as.

So what do you guys think? Agree? Disagree? Despite these flaws it's totally worth it to buy the Orange Box for this.

Apparently Valve are taking a good hard look at the pyro at the moment.

Spy should be able to attack and stuff while doing that coming out of invisibility animation. It's soooo long. But I love the fact that you take on other players' names.

I've spent the most time being Engineer, and maybe I just suck at it but I don't think it's overpowered. What really sucks is when an Engineer is sitting literally on top of a Dispenser and a Sentry up against a corner. No back stabs, he's constantly being healed, he's constantly fixing his gun and warding off sappers, and only explosives and rockets can really do anything, except those classes will get destroyed by the sentry.

I spend a lot of time as Pyro too, and I find the class to be marvelous, or maybe I'm just weird. I turn entire teams crispy when I sneak to their control point. Also, Pyro's taunts are amazing.

I started using Sniper recently, which is fun during Sudden Death in certain maps. They take good care of Sentries and Heavies.

I also like scout. I find it weird that they count as 2 people at control points, so five scouts would basically turn an entire map blue or red in a minute. Can they climb walls? I've seen it but I haven't tried it or done it, just the double jump.

Posted by: BlizzardMan Sep 26 2007, 07:44 PM
I decided I'll get real good as a pyro, since spies will be crap in leagues if they stay as they are now. And I do hope to join a league or something, cause it'd be wicked fun. But yeah, pyros are where it's at atm for me.

Posted by: Joey Sep 26 2007, 08:00 PM
I hear people complaining that spies are overpowered with their instant-planting with sappers. I don't happen to think so, since it can be really easy to see who the spy really is when they plant, plus sentries kick a lot of ass.

Posted by: BlizzardMan Sep 29 2007, 04:25 PM
Ok been playing a lot since last night, and the update which nerfed Demos (a tiny bit) and buffed Pyros a bunch is awesome. Pyros are a legit offensive class, and now Demos are MUCH more suited to defense.

Posted by: Joey Sep 29 2007, 06:02 PM
At first I wasn't sure if the Pyro really was better, or my entire team just sucked at staying NOT on fire.

Posted by: Joey Sep 30 2007, 10:38 PM
So I've learned how to use both Sniper and Heavy to their fullest potential. In "Capture the Intel" I have the urge to be a sniper to take out anything coming out of the other base, but there are usually five of those to begin with. So I mainly use Sniper and Heavy for protecting/defending in the "three control points" map.

I learned it's also kind of tough to go very far away from a Dispenser as Heavy, even with a medic. Heavy chews through his ammo like crazy.

You can pick up the weapons of everyone you kill too.

Snipers are a bitch to kill while playing Pyro. They're really good if you sit back in the tunnels in cp_gravelpit while the rest of your team rushes B or A, or, alternatively, while you defend A or B.

I usually run around the outer ring of those maps and check tunnels for snipers as a pyro. Once they're on fire they're chopping blocks for your axe. Same goes for Heavies.

True this. So does crit hitting with your Heavy's gatling gun. At point blank range. With uber.

Looks like someone found out that if you put a connected exit teleporter under doors, they will not open. Some guy did that to our respawn room one game and we couldn't get out for a few gamemodes.

The medic is so much fun to play it's a little ridiculous. Unlike Counter Strike where I actually have a chance against people, I rarely ever am able to get a kill in TF2 in the other classes. I love being the medic and healing everyone and getting my thing supercharged so that me and a heavy or demoman or something can go charging into battle.

Team Fortress 2 is awesome.

You sure you didn't kill anybody for that last point AFTER the round ended? It'll still add up points on the scoreboard even after you kill people after the round's ended and you're waiting for the next map, but it won't ACTUALLY count it.

I personally like Sniper, but it's more a question if setting yourself up on the map before getting shot (when you've scored one kill, it tends to be on a roll afterwards), with some custom maps being perfect for it. Spies are also satisfying when you;ve backstabbed someone, and my most points in one round is with a spy (I think like 13), but it all comes down to how well you can 'act' and whether they have any pyros to check you out. One map I played on was brilliant because there were like 5 snipers on this big bridge on the enemy side of the field, and I just went in a short line backstabbing, cloaking, backstabbing, cloaking, until I got killed.

Oh, and Total Headshots in one round for me = 6

You can get a steam account and buy the game online. Then you can download it. You won't have full on steam profile or anything I don't think though.

Yeah, normally it automatically turns on on August 24 (Quake Team Fortress's birthday) but you can force it using the serverside Sourcemod plugin.

I wanted to ask something, as it's being a bit annoying and started tonight. Sometimes, in the middle of a game, or even when it's Loading the Map, or any other time, TF2 just quits and goes back to my desktop, and says 'Enginer Error - Bogus Slot player 32', or something to that effect. It's pretty damn annoying, and often I'll get thrown off TF2 at the worst times (like just after I dominate somebody, or I'm setting a new kill/backstab record). Any ideas as to why/what to do?

I find the only way you can successfully backstab people is disguise as an enemy spy then when they're all running to your base, stab them in sequence (as long one doesn't spin round and pyro you).

Also, I found a cheap tactic for defending the Intelligence: get a Dispenser or two, and park a heavy (or two) next to them with their miniguns left on, and you'll have a constant HP regen/Ammo supply. I've yet to see people banned for it, but it's better than Engineers guarding in some cases, as they can't sap you then get the Intel as by the time they've got near you, they're full of holes.

I've seen that tactic before. Unfortunately for them, that doesn't stop a spy. I once uncloaked while perched on top of a dispenser next to a Heavy (who was also next to a sentry on his other side) and I proceeded to sap the sentry and then stab the heavy in the back of the head.

Some guy with a mic who was dead and spectating me said "That was the coolest thing to watch ever."

your what?
please describe your secret methods to me D:

On the first stage of Dustbowl, on the red team, whip out your exit teleporter and walk up to the chain-link fence on your right, right before going into the mines/caves. You can build a teleporter on the ground behind the fence. It's inaccessable by people, but sentry bullets and explosions can pass through either side. This pretty much eliminates two paths out of the possible four to get to the second CP with an un-sappable sentry gun.

There are a lot of places in a lot of maps where I like to build sentry guns in unreachable places, without having to go under the map. I can't get under the map in Gravelpit anymore anyway, but people were also amazed by the unreachable sentry gun above the doorway directly across from Point C. That got me a few giggles.

Okay because the CCC isn't viewable by regular members anymore I am going to repost my spy writeup

  • Cloaking
    • do not cloak if you don't have to, it takes 3 times as long to charge as it does to use
    • try not to uncloak near people, especially in front of them. while decloaking, your translucent effect is the color of your real team, so disguising as an enemy spy will not help you
    • decloaking makes a sound that the other team can hear. probably. it's best to stay behind people and far away when uncloaking, even if they can't hear the sound.
    • if you are cloaked and you bump into an enemy, you will appear translucent and your team's color for a brief period of time. if you are shot while cloaked, you will also be visible in the same manner.
    • if a pyro lights you on fire, you will glow with your team's color and be on fire. You will still be cloaked, but.. you're very obviously on fire and very obviously a spy. AVOID PYROS LIKE THE PLAGUE.
  • Disguises.
    • Avoid disguising as your target. This will be explained a few points from now.
    • note that if the class you are disguising as is slower than you, you will be made slower.
    • When disguised, the weapon you are holding is always, always, always the default weapon of the class you are disguising as (the one the class spawns holding.)
    • When disguised, your name will be that of a random player of the class you are disguised as. If there are none, it will be a random name from the opposing team. (I am not sure about friendly disguises.) This is why you shouldn't disguise as your target, as if they see you with their name they will obviously shoot you.
    • if you are cloaked and disguise, the enemy can see the smoke.
  • The Sapper

The Electro-Sapper is a device that you can plant on enemy engineer structures by clicking on them. It has no cooldown time and does not undisguise you when used. When attached to a building, a sapper will slowly drain its health and then eventually kill it. A sapper can be removed by two whacks from an engineer wrench. Note that while a sapper is attached, engineer whacks will not heal the structure. This is why sapspamming can be effective. Also... EVERY TIME AN ENGINEER KILLS A SAPPER, THEY GAIN POINTS. THIS LEADS TO MORE CRITICALS FOR THE ENGINEER.

  • The gun

People forget about this a lot, it seems. On a successful hit, it will do about 40-50 damage (110 if it crits or something? not sure.) It is, off the top of my head, the most accurate non-sniper rifle weapon in TF2. Also, the position of your shots does not matter in the slightest- a bodyshot does just as much as a headshot. The gun can be a useful aid in destroying a sapped sentry before the engineer can get to it, as it accelerates the rate at which the sentry loses life.

  • Disguises I use frequently, and why:
    • Pyro - Generally people expect them to be spychecking in places where spies usually go. Also pyro movement speed = spy movement speed.
    • Sniper - You can chill out in sniper spots a bit easier, also people generally expect you to be somewhere behind them. In addition, the movement speed is the same as a spy.
    • Demoman - Demoman like to sit around and watch their sticky traps, therefore it may be more plausible to be sitting around disguised as a demo. Note, however, that demo movement speed is very slightly slower than a spy's, and you will have a harder time catching up people who move at spy-speed (pyros, engies, snipers, other spies) unless they stop moving. It's still a viable choice, however. Just not as good.
    • Engineer - Obviously, engineers are around their buildings. They move at the same speed as spies, too. However, if you are going to be hanging around engineers, the probability of an engineer using the same name as you goes way up, and therefore your odds of being detected are massive.
  • Less desirable disguises
    • Scout - You only move at spy-speed, which is half of that of a scout's. Nobody will ever believe that (except stupid people). The only reason you might want to disguise as scout is because people may generally think, "oh hey it's a scout that's far away, he's not a spy because no idiot spy would be disguised as scout." for me, because i don't expect it, it takes a second for me to realize that a slow scout may be a spy, and if he's using the disguise for this reason, he is probably long gone. it has happened (to me) and can work.
    • Soldier - There's nothing really wrong with this disguise except that it's slow. It can catch people off guard however, but.. it's slow. Heavy - Same thing. Also, you can't spin your gun. You can catch people off guard with it, though.
    • Medic - Usually people expect you to be healing or have your healgun out. Also, a spy disguised as a medic does not have an ubercharge percentage displayed. Medics also move oh-so-slightly faster than spies, not that most people would notice.
    • Spy - Any decent spy should be disguised 95% of the time. If you see a spy running around undisguised, you should spycheck him. When disguised as a spy, you cannot have another disguise on top of that.
  • Why the previous two lists are almost useless

You absolutely cannot be relying on your disguise to fool people. The only real thing your disguise can do is protect you from sentry fire. When you play, you should make every effort possible to never, ever be seen by the enemy, especially your target. Use your cloak to get behind them and stab them. Obviously, engineers require different tactics, but this should work for almost everyone except scouts.

  • If there are a bunch of people in front of you and they haven't seen you, it's stabbing time. This works especially well if they're superclosetogether... You can completely decimate an attack force of 2 medics and 2 heavies in a couple seconds if they're fairly close together. Moments like these make me break out in maniacal laughter on voice chat.
  • Engineers.

If done properly, you will be their bane. There are a few ways to handle an engineer who has a sentry and maybe a couple other things around.

    • If they are behind their sentry and the sentry is pointed the other way, you can backstab the engineer and immediately plant a sapper as soon as the engineer dies. This is my favored tactic. However, if there is another sentry, it will kill you as soon as you stab the engineer. Make sure you do not switch to sapper until the knife connects with the engineer, otherwise the stab will be interrupted and there is a 99% probability you will die.
    • You can spam sappers on everything in sight, and continue to plant sappers as engineers whack them off. If there is more than one engineer, or if the engineer's teammates are around, you will die. This tactic works best if your teammates are already attacking the sentries, as sapped sentries do not return fire.
    • As a variation of the previous technique, you can throw sappers onto everything and then gun down the sentry, switching back to sapper as necessary to keep the sentry from killing you if an engineer is knocking the sapper off.
    • If you plant a sapper on a sentry, the engineer will likely move towards the sentry to take off the sapper. If they turn their back to you, even for a second... let them have it. Hahahaha.
    • I think i'm forgetting something.
  • Targets, in a proposed order of priority
    • Competent players. If they are causing massive problems for your team... solve them.
    • Other spies. Watch your back and pull out your revolver if you can't immediately get a backstab.
    • Sentries, and by extension, engineers.
    • Medic/Heavy comboes. Medics are staying near their heavies, who are slow, and heavies are massive targets for backstabbing.
    • Medics. Any time you can, kill a medic. They aren't hard to kill if they're standing still/moving slowly. At the right time, the death of a single medic can be enough to tip the game in your team's favor.
    • Snipers, especially if they're competent. Try to avoid being seen by them.
    • Demomen. They're slower than you, so you can catch up to them (eventually) and if they die, their stickies disappear.
    • Anything in front of you, if you have nothing better to kill.
    • Incompetent players, if you really have nothing better to kill. More points, more criticals.
    • People who've noticed that you're a spy. If you're about to die, and running away isn't feasable, unload a few rounds into them in a desperate hope of killing them. Naturally, if you have more points, you have a better chance to get lovely, lovely criticals.
  • WORK WITH YOUR TEAM. Use voice communication.

...That's all I can think of for now.

Posted by: Jack Thompson Nov 26 2007, 07:36 PM
should mention something about not always disguising as the same class

and how to act like your disguised class

Medic gets no love ;_; Shitloads of assists though

Anyway I just played a Mario 64 map and it was kinda silly. Because the map was huge with like no walls everyone was either a scout or a sniper. As soon as you spawned you got headshot'd :<

Bill,

Having alot of points doesnt mean you're good, you should say how many rounds you played to get that or I'm going to think you just played 127, 1 point rounds...

Posted by: LuigiFan Dec 8 2007, 04:25 PM

Yeah, he got hit by a rocket. Note how his HP bar shows he still has health and the medigun is still aimed at him. (Like that's going to save him now)

Hey let's all share some tips 'n' tricks!

Demoman: in hydro, or any other map with CPs w/ ceilings, put your stickies on those ceilings so that you don't notice them when you walk into the point. Then, when you here that someone's cappin' dat shit, blow them to smithereens!

Engineer: when defending a really boring spot, or someplace that there is only one place to defend, put up a teleport entrance and exit right next to each other and teleport between them over and over. You get 1/2 a point per teleport!

Pyro: learn to spin in circles really fast so that when you run onto a capture point that the other team is almost done with, you hit every single person there, hopefully getting a kill, but always causing a lot of confusion!

Soldier: learn to rocket jump, seriously. It lets you get to Blu's door before the match starts on gravelpit, and also lets you get on top of lots of buildings for a huge height advantage. Also, surprising the other team when you jump over the initial train blockade in well is always fun!

Scout: the bat is the best way to kill people. BONK!!

Spy: refer to whatever everyone else wrote, it's pretty much all been said

I don't know a whole lot about the other classes, aside from that the bonesaw is fuckin' sweet

Soilder or Demoman: On 2fort, enter the opposing teams fort. Take the left entrance to there courtyard (the narrow-ish passage). When you come to the corner, look up and you will see the exit (or in this case entrance) to one of there spawn bases. Rocket/Sticky jump up there and take them out unexpectedly everytime they respawn. This helps rack up points if you're a cheap ass faggot like myself.

I heard Heavy is good for begginers because huge health and fighting is just click and hold wherever area you want damage in.
