| http://archive.mfgg.net/index.php?showtopic=208917&view=findpost&p=2922141 -Discuss your opinions and ideas here first, before we start making any music.- This topic is to discuss music more thoroughly than the last music topic. But for reference, you can check back to http://archive.mfgg.net/index.php?showtopic=202877. One big aspect we had talked about was the use of a leitmotif, or a repeated chord or musical phrase that is repeated throughout the game. This would mean incorporating a select few notes into a lot of the songs - a challenge we need to decide whether to attempt or not. If we were to do this, we would need to establish the theme first. If anyone is willing to step up and give it a try, you are more than welcome to. The ultimate theme should be chosen by the community, if not exclusively by the people who have to work in the theme's frame. After and if we do the leitmotif, we are somewhat hindered by the progress of the rest of the game. We have a general idea of what kind of levels there will be, but nothing is set in stone. So don't like, start making anything yet. To check on what levels we need done, we will refer to the http://archive.mfgg.net/index.php?showtopic=202668&st=0. All together, we only need somewhere around 20-25 pieces. |

| I would also like to make a few suggestions:
|
| Posted by: Strong Apr 26 2008, 01:24 PM |
| I think leitmotifs are fine, but let's just not overboard like SMW and make a ton of different versions of essentially the same song. |
| Posted by: Pucifur Apr 26 2008, 01:44 PM |
| Yeah, if we use a leitmotif it should be a more subtle one, rather than having every song be a remix. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 26 2008, 10:55 PM |
| I believe we still need to get other things done before we contemplate music. We need some sort of visual to build our music upon. |
| Posted by: Pucifur Apr 27 2008, 11:59 AM | ||
I hesitated because of that, but I don't think its too early to discuss the music. For instance,
gives us something to talk about. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 28 2008, 12:38 AM |
| We can discuss to a limited extent, but we can't really start creating music for the game before we get some visuals of the style of things like the menu, the levels, the gameplay (someone could make a visually bright level and it looks fine, but if the music created for it is fast and the camera is intentionally one of the slow automatic scrolling, it makes the player want to move through it too fast for the scroller; this is just an example). |
| Posted by: cyberkid Apr 28 2008, 07:15 PM |
| I liked it in toad strikes back when T.D. remixed songs to go in places where they didn't belong. Like yoshis island song underwater and The peaches castle song during one of the boss battles. |
| Posted by: Gamesmonkey Apr 29 2008, 10:49 AM |
| How about remixes in certain areas only? For example, I was thinking about the Rawest Forest, and for a forest level if it froze over it could have a winter remix. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 29 2008, 12:15 PM |
| We're not using remixes that belong to anyone outside of this project, so Rawest Forest won't go in there. But, yeah, we can have a few remixes. But we want more original music than anything. |
| Posted by: Zephyra Apr 29 2008, 08:14 PM | ||
Hmmm. so one of the remixes could be, say, the Underground theme, since it is remixed in almost every Mario game, yet it is remixed while almost all of the other music in the game is exclusive to that game only. And a leitmotif is fine by me as long as it doesn't butcher the game like YIDS :X |
| Posted by: Dex May 2 2008, 09:28 PM |
| The leitmotif idea sounds excellent, as stated before. Remixes of pieces our CFP music makers would work, also. Also, could be pay a homage or two to the classic Mario Bros. Theme? It's always a fan favorite. |
| Posted by: Peardian May 2 2008, 09:48 PM |
| Since I'm not very musically skilled, so I don't have much to say, but I would like to remind everyone that the game's theme is basically a hunt for ancient treasure. Just something to keep in mind when thinking of a leitmotif. |

| I don't care what music is in this game, as long as none of them are MIDIs. |
| Posted by: Zephyra May 9 2008, 04:44 PM | ||
Don't worry. If any are made, me or Yoshiman can change them to mp3s |
| Posted by: Pucifur May 13 2008, 06:25 PM | ||
This is good to think about indeed! Also, demon masta, there will more than likely be MIDIs in this game. Lots of people here use MIDI editing software. There will be other formats for cutscenes and probably some levels. From what I understand, however, the majority of the levels will run with a MIDI or something similar in the background. |
| Posted by: Pikax May 21 2008, 03:01 PM | ||
I really don't understand what problem people have with MIDIs. I think they sound all right. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman May 22 2008, 12:16 AM | ||
People expect everyone that makes fangames to always use mp3's/ogg's or modules of some sort, and also expect that everyone now-a-days has high speed internet that can download a potentially 50 MB fangame (because of the high quality music) in 30 seconds flat. It's basically due to people having too many high expectations for something that we do, which is free to make and play. |
| Posted by: Pikax May 22 2008, 11:53 AM |
| If MIDIs are allowed, I can help. I have a few ideas for music for a boss battle. |
| Posted by: SuperMarioMaster May 22 2008, 01:01 PM | ||||
50!?! Why would anyone want to download a fan game thats 50mb?
Still, I think using midis wouldn't be THAT bad :[ |
| Posted by: Pikax May 22 2008, 02:45 PM | ||
That's why I only ever use MIDIs when making fangames. Suppose Toad Strikes Back had all its MIDI music replaced by MP3 files. It would be so huge in terms of filesize that nobody would download it, despite its awesomeness, because of the sheer length of the download time. I'm pretty sure you'd be incredibly annoyed if you waited half an hour for something to download only to find out it was total rubbish, so you don't take the chance if you see a large file size. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman May 22 2008, 03:21 PM | ||
Exactly. Though it might be worth it if the game is really good. Better than waiting 3 days to download an episode of Half-Life 2 via Steam. which is, on average, around 4 to 5 gigabytes |
| Posted by: Pucifur May 28 2008, 01:16 PM |
| I think now would be a good as time as ever to start work on the leitmotif. So please, if you could, start coming up with ideas. Things to keep in mind:
-- The first two themes you hear are the "extended" themes, if you will. After that, you'll hear a shorter leitmotif used throughout the game (note how short it is and also how its mood changes). I'd also like to note that it's those 3 notes you hear in the last half of the clip that play when you call Midna. http://youtube.com/watch?v=DFGN1aILOIc And silly me, I neglected to include http://youtube.com/watch?v=1QqdlXtTIjE and http://youtube.com/watch?v=EVpHPh_4uhs&feature=related in that compilation. These exemplify some more dramatic leitmotif uses: a desert theme and a western theme. |

if it was good anyways in today's standards 50mb is not something to be overwhelmed by, I downloaded something that was over 1GB in under 20 minutes the other night |

My comp would take all day long :[ in b4 noone cares |

| The music won't be huge, rest assured. Now if I could direct your attention to http://archive.mfgg.net/index.php?showtopic=208917&view=findpost&p=2922141, now is the time to start working on a theme. |

| i'd be glad to help with music if you need it. =] |
| Posted by: Pucifur Jun 3 2008, 06:22 PM |
| Your help would be a very good thing. Just come up with a few ideas for the leitmotif, perhaps? Big 'ol description in that post a few posts up. |
| Posted by: Fender Jun 3 2008, 06:34 PM | ||
so the leitmotif thing is like how in pokemon all the routes sound similar, but are different, yes? |
| Posted by: Pucifur Jun 3 2008, 06:46 PM |
| Hmm.. I don't play enough Pokemon to remember, haha. But in that post I have a link to a compiled Twilight Princess thing that lets you hear what I'm talking about. It's basically the same notes repeated across songs. |
| Posted by: Draco Icebane Jun 3 2008, 06:50 PM |
| If you guys are going to be using MIDI's, you should probably just use Modules instead. Modules are MIDI format so they're pretty much made the same way, they'll sound almost exactly the same on different computer systems (differing in raw sound quality and not by entire mismatched soundcard instruments), and they're barely any larger than MIDI files are in the first place. What the hell is a leifmotif? |

| anyone ever considered using emulated music, I know it's possible in gamemaker using SXMS-3, is it possible in MMF? |
| Posted by: Doomlord250 Jun 24 2008, 01:37 PM |
| Does anyone know any freeware to make songs with that you can make note by note (I have only found Easy Music Composer and that can't do it like that). I know things I'd want to have for this, I can hear it in my head, but I can't actually make it on the computer, And besides the topic, I haven't been on here for months or so. |

YIDS had one, but they abused it |
