MFGG Message Boards: Archives > Music Competitions > Unofficial Music Competition - SMB Theme

Posted by: AppleQueso Nov 24 2007, 09:07 PM
Yoshiman gave me the go ahead, so I'm making this now.

This is the first Unofficial Music Competition
the rules are essentially the same as the official competitions in the General Chat. There will be a limited time to work, followed by a vote, followed then by a final vote.

The theme is:
"Create a composition that is either a remix of, or resembles the same style as the overworld theme from Super Mario Bros."

Examples are somewhat unnecessary, as this song is all but universally reknown.

You may submit either modules, midi or mp3, however not wav, as the file size is too large.

Here's some helpful programs
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - Free Recording software
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&i=lame-mp3 - Allows Audacity to export to MP3, a must. This will also allow you to convert .Wav to .Mp3 (via Audacity)
http://www.anvilstudio.com/ - Simple to use Midi sequencer (click "Download ver xxxx" at the top of the screen")
http://www.modplug.com/ - A sequencer that uses wav samples. If you want more info on how to use it, check our the NCFC music workshop transcript - http://brosofcanada.sepwich.com/NCFCTrans/MusWorkTrans.txt

I'm not sure how long to give, but for now, you have until Dec 8, 2007. If an extension is necessary at that time, we will make one.

Enjoy the competition, and good luck!

I'm not so good with the SMB1 Overworld theme, but I'll give it a try.

Usually if someone intentionally makes wrong notes, he/she either makes all the notes wrong, or pitches them at the beginning of a measure, not at random intervals.

Yeah, I use sheet music when I make my remixes (except when I add original touches to it).

It just eliminates the chance of making a horrible note appear.

i learn a song by ear, first the key and then the notes; if i have the same instrument that the song uses then it's easy

(of course you should have a copy of the song handy)

It may be just my taste in music, but it took way too long to start, and to me I just don't like songs that take too long to start. When it does start, it takes another amount of time to get to the next part. And on a technicality, the other half of the song is the underground theme, and not the overworld theme... and the ending to the entire song just didn't feel like it had any kind of impact. Sounds like a good Techno song though... although I don't care for techno, but again, it's just my taste in music.

Oh, and I am so entering, .mid of course.

I told AppleQueso to ensure we kept this first competition very open and general, which is why I let another member previously keep his entry, as he has not only a medley of the overworld and underground, but the star theme as well.

And, yeah, it's usually the taste in music that gets everyone. >_< There's various amounts of variables that are difficult to achieve every single individual's gratification in every one.

And it's more Electronic than Techno, but since you said you don't have a taste for that kind of music, it's expected that you could generalize it to that genre. *thumbs up*

All MIDI sequencers are similar in how you insert notes, chords, progressions, and how you use the piano roll or wave table to change your volumes, pitches and other effects.

also i'd like to specify that most of the formats in Modplug Tracker use instruments, not just samples -- instruments can be multisampled and apply effects to them which could potentially make it sound more realistic

it also supports some soundfonts but I'm not sure on the technicalities of that
