MFGG Message Boards: Archives > Music Competitions > Music Competition #2 - CHASE TIME

Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 11 2007, 09:28 PM
Alright, congrats to Pucifer for getting second (glad you finished your piece as well, dude), and to everyone else involved. We had a LOT more entries than expected. Let's keep it up, shall we?

Alright, so for the test competition, we did a general Mario 1-1 theme. Now, seeing as it seems to be lifting off the ground well, let's get more specific. Or perhaps, in your view, this is getting more general.

The theme:

Chase music. You know, the kind of music that plays in the background when we're being chased by a truck/machine/biochemical zombie/huge enemy of some kind, and all you can do is run? You're to create that kind of music.

The specifics:
- The tempo must be 180 or higher. No lower. After all, if we want to set the atmosphere/scene for a chase scene, we can't have music that's dragging us along.
- Lots of decreasing scales. This is another aspect of chase music, running usually is a negative, that also decreases in expectancy of where you're going. Having a lot of semi-note scales going down helps this mood. If you don't know what I mean by this, then I just mean to make sure you have a good amount of notes going down 1 by 1 on different instruments:

G
F#
F
E#
E

etc etc

If you need an example, I've created one. It only took me about 2 hours, so it's not great at all, but it serves as a reference point.

The competition will end January 4th, seeing as we have holidays and such.

ALRIGHTY GO

Alright, missed the last one, so let's try this one.
Interesting theme...

When will this end?

Good question.

Lemme add that.

This time I will get a badge cool2.gif

I'll get on it right away!

EDIT: Here's my song v.1
It doesn't really feel like a chase IMO, but it's fast paced.

ah, fast.

That's right up my alley.

Good, but near the end when yu have those three parts transposing, they don't sound liike they're done at the right moment.

I'll try entering this if I can think of something cool.

Can it be from a game or does it have to be custom?

I'd rather it be custom. In this competition, it's like you're creating a song for a new video game.

does it have to be midi/computer made or can i record me playing guitar/drums/whatnot (my friend has a recording studio in his basement) would that be fine for me to do that?

We already said in the first competition, but yes, you can use whatever medium you have, as long as the average computer user has the ability to play it with whatever programs he/she has.

Fruityloopification!
It feels more like a Boss fight than a Boss chase or something IMO headslap.gif
It's now in MP3 format. I've transposed the 'chaotic' violins a bit to make it sound more like that 'I'm gonna stab and murder you when your taking a shower'-scenario.

Actually, I realize that it's difficult to make a "chase" song, even my example isn't that great. That's why I said basically, there's two specifics to it - the tempo and scales, and the rest is up to you.

Allright. This ought to be a bit more fun than Mario theme remix #12A. I'll do my best to get my entry done.

Agh. Anvil studio is not the program to use for this king of thing. I just hope the keyboard I have at my dad's is a MIDI one. It'd make this sort of thing a lot easier..

May I ask why Anvil Studio isn't the program to use for this concept?

I used Anvil Studio. Works perfectly fine.

Apparently it exists in trackers.

Query: Am I allowed to change my entry?

Reason: I got a sudden burst of inspiration and made a loop way better fitting to the target theme than my last entry.

Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 31 2007, 02:06 PM
Nova: Yep.

NICKtendo DS: Yep.

Rage: Nope. We already had that competition, and to just do it again would have been boring, and we were all pretty much sick of that theme after the competition.

Cool.

Well here it is. It's short, but better.

I didn't know you guys had things like these.

I'll probably miss this one.

I'd be more inclined to join if we did remakes of Mario songs. I'm sure other would prefer that, too. All the notes are there for us, we just have to get creative. Writing an original piece is a lot harder than just rearranging one.

so i wasnt sure what to do, so i asked my one good friend, and she told me to make it sound like a nightmare, but reverse the events it happens it. I don't really like her idea, but i did it anyways, so it starts with fast beat, and ends with a lullaby-ish sound.

never did make it to my friends house. He has ACID.
