MFGG Message Boards: Archives > Music Competitions > Music Competition #5 - Super Smash ...

(Congratulations to Pucifer for second place and Littlink & Luigifan12 for third btw)

As many of you may know by now, Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes out next midnight, unless you're one of those Euroaustralian folks, in which case business turns a deaf ear to you once again!

You probably also know that no form of Mega Man is in Brawl, and that this is a cardinal sin. Business issues have once again brought Nintendo to dance to a different tune than their fanbase.

It's far too late to convince Nintendo and Capcom to change their minds, so all we can do now is mourn. And therefore, as a gift to poor Mega Man who has been shafted once again ..

Music Competition #5. Super Smash Rockman Brawl

Ends: ... I have no idea. Nobody's really entered so I give you until April 7. Hurry the hell up!

Select a Mega Man song and remix it as though it were included in Brawl. Since this is a music competition, it isn't necessary to include the character and the level. It may even be possible for your music alone to make it clear which character and level you wish were in Brawl.
  • The song may be for any character. It does not have to be for one of the Mega Mans.
  • The song does not have to be from classic Mega Man. Hell, it can be from Zero, Legends, Battle & Chase, or Mega Man Soccer if you want.
  • It does not have to be epic or orchestral. Brawl has many styles, and occasionally just covers the older song with newer instruments, or does jazz or ska and GANGSTA RAP, just as long as it sounds like a new SSB song
Somewhere on MFGG, there was a full soundtrack of Brawl rips for style reference, but I don't know if the topic died. It will be in Brawl Discussion if it still exists.

Sheet music:
  • http://www.sound-test.org/sheet-music/mega-man/mega-man-2/
  • http://www.sound-test.org/sheet-music/mega-man/mega-man-3/
  • http://www.sound-test.org/sheet-music/mega-man/mega-man-x/ (only has Main Theme)
If you have the proper WinAmp extensions, or Meridian Advance, you can play the attached NSF and SPC files, which are the full soundtracks of Mega Man 1-7 and X1-X3. (SPC's can be converted to IT which would mean you can see the notes, I'll probably convert them later since it takes a while)

Sounds friggin' awesome.

Taking MM2 Wily's Stage for my entry.

Posted by: Pucifur Mar 8 2008, 01:28 PM
I'm not very familiar with Mega Man, so I think I'll sit this one out. Nice competition, and good work with the last one.

Posted by: Weirdestchild Mar 8 2008, 07:12 PM
While I don't understand how I didn't get any votes, I had fun arranging the music for the last Competition. If I find time inbetween Brawl Sessions, I will try my hand at arranging the Boomer Kuwanger stage music, because that was my favorite Megaman stage music ever.

i may try something for this.
interesting theme.

Draco...thank you ;_;

I've been absent but I'm gonna make up for not posting in this topic earlier! I'm going to...for reals this time...no buts...

ENTER THE COMPETITION

Posted by: AquaMan Mar 25 2008, 02:38 AM
Musical update!

I SERIOUSLY need help. I've never really played any music ever in my life, and yet I tried to compose an ElecMan midi. It sounds just like those midis you see on the New list on VGMusic that get pulled from the site hours later ;_;

It's not even the full song awww man

If I can somehow manage to make a decent base, I could at least modplug it up, but as of now it's complete garbage and I think I'm gonna cry

Posted by: kane]deth[ Mar 27 2008, 07:45 PM
Yes I may enter this.
There really is no set atmosphere for Brawl though, so it might be a bit hard.

Posted by: WoodMan Mar 28 2008, 07:21 PM
I'll try maybe for FlashMan.
Wait no CrashMan.

Can the song have words in it?

I can't imagine why not. Super Smash Brothers Brawl uses words in several of its songs.

brawl's got some awful crap with words in it, but it's enough that yes you can put words in it

don't expect me to listen to it though!! i get nervous about people's singing :[

I just finished Gustman's stage. (Whoever he is. I'm no real fan o' Megaman) So how do I enter? This is my first comp. Speaking of which: Where do you enter sprite comps? I've been dying to get in one.

Goto the General Chat and look at the stickies there. Just follow the theme and make a set of sprites.

For entering this comp, just make your own original song with whatever medium you want of any MegaMan song you want but make it Brawlish

Posted by: Pucifur Mar 30 2008, 09:22 PM
You still need help PressStart? I figure I could -attempt- at helping you since I'm not actually entering this anyhow.

Posted by: Black Boo Apr 1 2008, 01:23 PM
Well I got my song done. Now what? I'm new at comps.

Well I got my song done. Now what? I'm new at comps.

When the song's complete, put it in a *.zip file (I'd use a *.rar except everybody's too lazy to get WinRAR)

Windows XP: Right-click some white space in a folder, create a zip file, and drop the music in
Vista: I have no idea if they keep the same system for Vista
Anything else: If you aren't using Windows XP chances are you know how to make a *.zip file anyway

If the zip file is under 10 mb, you can attach it to a post with the field right under where you type your post. If you quoted somebody, it's under the field for their quote.

If it's not, which usually means your song is very very long, you have to find a free web host to upload it to.

I guess I'll start to make my song.

Tried and gave up.

Posted by: NICKtendo DS Apr 2 2008, 01:06 PM
Might as well be the first one to enter the competition.
In other words, I kept trying anyway.
Vile Battle with a little essence of Maverick Battle, both from Megaman X.

It's a mix of Vile's talk, battle, and the boss theme from MMX1

SkullMan is hard to get good samples for. :C

Brass trumpets are the only things that fit the main tune.

I'll most likely have mine in Sunday or Monday.

Hmm. Odd. I get the same thing.

Try another player, I know it works on QuickTime and Winamp.

It was great until the singing part came up. No offense, but the singing was terrible, mostly due to the sound quality that of the mic. It sounded like who ever was singing was too close to the mic.

Other than that, everything else was nice to listen to, it's just that the singing didn't fit.

Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 6 2008, 05:15 PM
Then I'll probably render a non-lyric version tonight and post it tomorrow.

because rendering takes a really long time

EDIT: I just thought of something. The mic was my high quality, music studio mic, processed through voice filters. Because I can't sing good high, I dropped the octave. That means all the frequencies of my voice were clashing with the lower frequencies, causing distortion, even when I equalized it to decrease the lower frequencies and increase the higher ones.

So, in that case, since I can't sing any higher without it sounding horrible, or hilarious because of my falsetto, it could be better to upload a non-lyric version.

Posted by: Black Boo Apr 6 2008, 05:28 PM
So so far it's me, NICKtendo DS, and DJ Yoshiman. At least each one of us will get a badge.

Posted by: MajinPiccolo Apr 6 2008, 07:34 PM
The lyrics in yoshiman's don't even go with the music at all, sorry bro

Posted by: MegaMan Apr 6 2008, 07:56 PM
The random bleep noises really get in the way, the rapping was unnecessary, and I don't like how "heavy" the part before the lyrics begin is

most everything else seems fine though

Posted by: Draco Icebane Apr 6 2008, 07:59 PM
As I said before, I absolutely hate the random NES noises you focused the song on. :x It's way too gimmicky and completely destroys the melody. It'd be better if you had a main melody going and used the noises as supplement (ie. you stick one in really quickly when the melody pauses briefly) -- Brawl does that on occasion but never stops the melody to focus on them, with the exception of Flat Zone (the Game & Watch didn't have any music.)

... and then there's the singing.

That was the most horrifying Mega Man song I have ever heard in my life.

I didn't even notice you were trying to sing to Wily Stage until the song was almost over, and you dropped a bunch of notes and broke the rhythm on occasion :[

Ignoring the cheesy lyrics which are fine in light of DK Rap, it was very awkward to listen to and felt very unrefined in comparison to the instruments in the rest of the song

Among other things, if you're going to sing to the rythm of the melody you should keep the same notes, which is *very* difficult to do with wily 2 since it spans two octaves and tends to have lots of fast, difficult intervals.

Posted by: MC Jimmy Apr 6 2008, 08:57 PM
Lol, I have a speech impediment and I can Rap better then that. Other then the rapping the song was good. Make one without the crappy lyrics.

Posted by: Black Boo Apr 6 2008, 09:23 PM
Apparently this wasn't that popular of a music comp seeing as there were only 3 entries.

That was pretty much my problem. I did the rap quite fine, and then got to the "chorus" of actual singing, attempted it, and "... oh shit i can maybe manage the first two notes of it and then my vocal chords will naturally shut off on me."

With that said, yeah, let me render and upload a copy without lyrics here as soon as possible.

@Black Boo: Yeah, apparently Megaman isn't a keen interest for remixing for the members here. Very odd.

EDIT: Did it quicker than expected. Updated without lyrics.

Some people don't have the money to buy programs that make mp3's.

Besides, like I said, it's not the medium of music or the quality that's important - the creativity of how they made the music flow, what chord/melody progressions they formed/chose, and generally just how they arranged the song.

Sort of like the sheet music is more important in these competitions than the execution of them - only for those who don't know sheet music, we provide the actual execution for example.
