| Many congratulations to DJ Yoshiman for his radical second place entry in the last competition, and good work to the other two who had the decency to enter! I've had plenty of time to come up with some ideas for a music competition. I wanted to do Rainbow Road, since it's an awesome track, but doing so would be snubbing the fiery ambitions of my fellow members, who seem to much prefer Mario Galaxy. No qualms though, since it had some pretty sweet music. But for this competition, you will be limited to one track in particular: Gust Garden Galaxy I don't have any rules or twists to impose on your creativity, but do something other than just flat out recreate the song. That's... rather boring. Try to mix it up a little. http://youtube.com/watch?v=HNqEfB6IYmE and http://youtube.com/watch?v=A0R6FnpqylE, but it lacks the intro. Have fun with this one folks. I hope to see some amazing things! And where's my head... this competition will enter Vote-Mode on May 12th. |

| I absolutely love this song, and am willing to pull out all the stops to make a successful entry. |
| Posted by: AquaMan Apr 11 2008, 06:17 PM |
| oh god yes thank you <3 although as much as I like it...I don't think I can replicate such a great song (without you know, making it sound like garbage) but hey, I'm gonna REEALLLLY REALLLLY try this time! |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Apr 11 2008, 07:36 PM |
| I'll actually finish mine on time! And that includes finishing it! |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 11 2008, 07:57 PM |
| Whaddaya mean only Gusty Garden Galaxy!? Ohhhhh! That's it! I'm winnin this one regardless of the track! And a month seema a little long... |
| Posted by: Pucifur Apr 11 2008, 08:00 PM | ||
Last one took a month. |
| Posted by: Tri Apr 11 2008, 08:15 PM |
| I'll erm, give this a shot. Whether I fail or succeed, it's still an accomplisment! |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 11 2008, 08:28 PM |
| Well, here's my entry. Now I wait. And I may change it. *sits in one place for the next month* Dang I forget! But what about the Badges? |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Apr 11 2008, 08:36 PM | ||
Well... something seems a bit wrong. As in tracks not playing. |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 11 2008, 08:55 PM |
| Huh? Weird, works for me... |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Apr 11 2008, 09:04 PM |
| I dunno, just sometimes it screws up and tracks stop playing, or get stuck, but when I rewind it a bit it works fine on that part, but then another part is messed. |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 11 2008, 09:08 PM | ||
Well, I can't help ya there cuz I know nothing of the problem. |
| Posted by: Strong Apr 11 2008, 09:12 PM |
| I'm going to do this, I'm going to make a MIDI, and I'm going to twist it up a little bit. |
| Posted by: Tri Apr 11 2008, 09:32 PM | ||
Er, not to burst your bubble here, but that sounds exactly like the one from VGMusic except for the glitches every now and then |
| Posted by: Strong Apr 11 2008, 09:37 PM | ||
This sounds exactly like the actual song, but with a couple of points where the music glitches beyond belief. Try to mix it up a bit- don't try to recreate the song, but instead try to reimagine the song. If you don't, it may end up really boring. |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Apr 11 2008, 10:57 PM |
| I agree. The point of the Music Compo (Though I was only here for #5), is meant to release your imagination into sounds rather than pictures or programming. That sounds like you just took it from VG Music, slapped it into your music file, took out the intro, then attached it to your reply. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 11 2008, 11:00 PM | ||
A month is actually less time than it would normally take to remix a song. Anyways, god damn, Pucifur, had I known you wanted to do Rainbow Road, I would have shut my mouth. I'd rather remix that than this. However, since I DO like Gusty Galaxy, I'm going to enter none-the-less. Also, congrats to you, Pucifur! Nice job on first place, I did like your entry! |
| Posted by: Draco Icebane Apr 11 2008, 11:54 PM |
| oh god what have you done |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 12 2008, 01:20 PM |
| I used the one from VGmusic as an example for mine, and there's nothing in the rules against it. But yeah, I'll change it up a bit. Maybe to a gameboy remix or something. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 12 2008, 01:36 PM | ||
I believe when we say remix, we don't mean just change the instrumentation. We mean to actually re-arrange the song in almost a new style, add some original parts, mix up the whole thing to sound like an actual remix of the song, rather than just a "here it is, but I changed the instruments, lol" |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 12 2008, 02:30 PM |
| Yeah. I know. I'm working on that now. |
| Posted by: Strong Apr 12 2008, 07:52 PM |
| http://www.box.net/shared/qyueg7c2so It's still a major WIP, but I still think it's an alright remix. I'm going to fix a few messed-up moments in the song and hopefully add more instruments (and perhaps a piano solo), but this is it so far. Hope you enjoy it. |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 13 2008, 06:19 PM |
| Okay, I changed mine to a wintery remix of it. It's only because IT'S APRIL AND THERE IS STILL 6 INCHES OF SNOW AT MY HOUSE!!!!!! |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Apr 14 2008, 05:13 PM | ||
When you got to that part where it starts playing the gusty garden theme exactly, it sort of seemed like the other piano which wasn't playing the theme was a bit off. And at the end it seemed a bit off as well. Not sure if this one was intentional though. Edit: And Black Boo, your entry seems much better this time, but it still screws up at places for me. |

| http://brosofcanada.sepwich.com/Yoshiman/DJYoshimanGustyGardenWIP.mp3 A definite WIP right now, I need some suggestions. Near the end of this audio file, the flute suddenly hits a note. I love these high notes in the bar, they fit, unfortunately, they just suddenly jump to them. Any idea where the hell I can place them in the bar measure, or how to get to them, so they don't just suddenly hit? No way am I taking those puppies out. |
| Posted by: Pucifur Apr 14 2008, 07:21 PM |
| For your note issue, I'd suggest carrying out the bottom note through the upper two notes. As for the rest of the song... the beginning really reminded me of Stone Tower Temple, especially when the percussion kicked in. It's a neat remix! |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 14 2008, 08:25 PM |
| Man, I'm pretty well screwed. AGAIN. I was hoping to win this one to make a broader SMG Music Competition. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 14 2008, 09:54 PM | ||
i feel like such a dumbass for not even thinking of doing that, i'll have to the next time i open the song Thanks for the suggestion! And thanks for the comment, though I'm obviously not done (ugh there is no equalizing in this song, raw music data is so lousy). Black Boo: No you're not. Like I said, the quality of the instruments and such don't matter, you agreed with what I said about judging music based on arrangement and creative ideas. You could always take creative artistic liberty to do something different with your music that could impress other people and myself! Also, please don't do the general SMG idea, especially right after this competition. We don't want to remix a song from the same game after we just finished remixing one, it mentally tires out the musicians from ideas. As well, it's been proven with the 2nd and 5th competitions that these competitions need a specific song to remix, we can't do general themes. It's the same deal with the drawing and sprite competitions. |

| ;-;...I am actually pretty bad at this. Could you give me a hand then? I have a really crappy sequencing program...Warning to everyone, DO NOT GET MIDI MAKER! |
| Posted by: Pucifur Apr 15 2008, 07:33 PM |
| I'd try Anvil Studio; but if you're looking for help, make a topic in the arts board asking for critique or ask for aide in the Help forum. Do you really think your competition is going to help you that much? :P |
| Posted by: Project_MK Apr 19 2008, 07:38 PM | ||
Anvil Studio won't play Gusty Gardens, it gives you an error after a few notes... Unless you're in mixer, then it will. |
| Posted by: Tri Apr 20 2008, 10:41 AM | ||
That really really really rocks, especially the high notes thingies. Good job! In the meantime, here's my WEEP entry (you need Winamp or ModPlug Tracker to play it): |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 20 2008, 11:30 AM | ||
Thanks, and also thanks to Pucifur for the suggestion, it works fine now. *thumbs up* Also, Tri, I love this. Do more with the harp, it really added to the song! |

| Posted by: Tri Apr 25 2008, 02:06 PM |
| Whoa, awesome. Love the title! |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 25 2008, 09:56 PM |
| So does anyone have any more suggestions? If not, I'm dead... |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 25 2008, 11:23 PM | ||
Did you check your Help topic? |
| Posted by: Black Boo Apr 25 2008, 11:35 PM | ||
Totally forgot about that. I'll check. I checked. I have modplug, but how do you sequence with it? By the way, what's a barycenter? |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Apr 26 2008, 11:14 PM | ||
There's a helpful tutorial from Draco and my music workshop from the NCFC. Here's the transcript: http://brosofcanada.sepwich.com/NCFCTrans/MusWorkTrans.txt Also, it means a balance between two points. |
| Posted by: AquaMan Apr 27 2008, 04:51 AM |
| Oh wow, that's really nice Yoshiman 8) It's so great to hear all these renditions of this song... I doubt I'm going to enter, because as much as I like it, it's lightyears beyond my skill level right now. |
| Posted by: Zephyra Apr 29 2008, 07:50 PM |
| Hay luk I entered. I didn't steal your Idea Black Boo :x I was thinking about either a desert or a winter remix winter sounded easier.then I saw yours when I got too far to quit Anyway WIP Posting now because I can http://h1.ripway.com/pikaboo1/FrostyFoliage.mp3 EDIT Ew the strings sound like crap. brbfixing EDIT2 Fixed |
| Posted by: Zephyra May 1 2008, 10:39 AM |
| Mmmkay finished. I love how this turned out I tried to keep it wintery throughout the whole thing, but it got hard in the guitar part. I hope it worked. http://h1.ripway.com/pikaboo1/Pikaboo_Frosty_Foliage_GGGRemix.mp3 EDIT: Synced up some crap a little, and raised the bells in the guitar part up an octave. |

| Fix your link, dude. |

Fixed |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman May 1 2008, 03:03 PM |
| Alright, that is great! However, the accompanying chord played at 00:48 seems unethical, perhaps you could find a major or minor for it to make it sound better against the other instruments playing there. |
| Posted by: Zephyra May 1 2008, 03:15 PM | ||
you mean like add a note to the chord to make it major or minor? Oh, and did I get the wintery feeling to stay? |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman May 1 2008, 07:12 PM | ||
No, I mean change one of the notes of the chord to make it a minor or major, whatever you must do to get that off-tune back into balance. And yes, you definitely did. |
| Posted by: Zephyra May 2 2008, 02:27 PM | ||
Okay I fixed that up. Tbh I didn't really think it would need it, but it does sound better (: also added another note to the ending so it isn't as dull (if you didn't know, the previous link now has the updated one) |

| Oof...Am I a silly for being too lazy to finish this? 8( http://h1.ripway.com/Yoshimuro/gustygarden(sucks).it |

| I think voting starts now. So how do we vote in music comps. Is it like top five voting, or like final voting? |
| Posted by: Pucifur May 12 2008, 06:18 PM |
| It goes straight to final voting because usually less than 5 people enter anyways. |
