Well, first time doing this, but thanks for the votes in the last comp. Didn't think I'd even come close to winning. The theme for this one is anything "Spooky." That's the only limitation. It just has to feel spooky. Whether that's an eccentric, goofy Halloween kind of spooky, or a creepy suspense kind of spooky, it's up to you. I think you usually have a month for this, right? Which means voting starts on August 21st.

the hell? you WON?
Posted by: ChaosEmerl Jul 21 2008, 07:19 PM
Yeah I didn't get it either, but hey I'm not complaining.
Posted by: NICKtendo DS Jul 21 2008, 07:36 PM
That sounds like something I can do. I'm right on it! EDIT: I tried. I'm not happy with the outcome, but... I'll whip up something better when I get the inspiration.
Posted by: Zephyra Jul 21 2008, 08:04 PM
Sounds like fun! Off I go EDIT: Would The Alternate Route/Koopa's Road theme from SM64 qualify if it wasn't the whole song?
Posted by: ChaosEmerl Jul 21 2008, 08:51 PM
Only if you remixed it somehow. It has to be some of your own work. Also, Nicktendo, that was pretty cool. Although it did have a lot of cliche horror songs worked into it.
Posted by: Fender Jul 23 2008, 09:43 PM
so are we supposed to come up with original work or remixes?
Posted by: ChaosEmerl Jul 23 2008, 09:55 PM
Either one. But preferably original. And if you do a remix, make sure a lot is changed in it, other than just the instruments.
Posted by: Zephyra Jul 24 2008, 12:36 AM
Sticky pls And I've started mine.

BOMP But I think I'll enter into this one. Hopefully my creative juices have been thoroughly replenished from that commission I just finished for this composition challenge.
Posted by: shroomguy Jul 30 2008, 10:40 PM
Eh....I guess I'll give this a shot. Gotta start somewhere, right? EDIT:http://www.sendspace.com/file/momb20 I think it turned out alright.

This is my arrangement of the battle theme from Final Fantasy VII for brass quintet. Arranging that theme from however many voices to only 5 took a lot of energy and thinking from me, so I think that it is fair game for this competition. Rather than just doing that theme, I tried to set a little atmosphere by starting off with a trumpet/trombone duet of Greensleeves, then a sudden slap into the theme. After the theme, it picks right back up with the duet of Greensleeves. One thing that I've written in the score, but I could not do with MIDI, is the issue of ending the piece. I've written in for the group to play the theme once all the way through, and on the second time, to stop somewhere in the middle of it (anywhere) and go to the ending of finishing off Greensleeves. This MIDI just plays the theme full two times. I think what I wrote in would really put some nice feeling of atmosphere into the performance by a brass quintet. I hope you enjoy it! http://media.putfile.com/Final-Fantasty-VII-Battle-Theme-for-brass-quintet

I looked int' search engine, but couldn't find any help, so i'm gonna ask... uh.. what program do you use to make music??
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 5 2008, 02:55 PM | ||
There are a number of variables here. What kind of music are you looking to create and how do you want to make it? Do you want to write sheet music? A good free program for that is the trial version of Noteworthy Composer (it's a trial, but it doesn't expire). Another is Finale Notepad. I use Sibelius 4, which is amazing, but is not free. You could use sampling and use a program like FL Studio to make your tracks. You could also record what you want live with a microphone and (optional) and free editing software (like Audacity). I'm most familiar with sheet music, though, so that is why I haven't gone in-depth to the other methods. I'm sure others here can give you some good information, though. |

Cool. Thanks Is it hard to make music with these programs? I've always wanted to try a hand at making music, but I could never be bothered to because I assumed that it would be difficult |
Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 5 2008, 10:35 PM
With most sheet music programs today, it's very easy to get started right away. Most of them are very user-friendly for the basic stuff. The most difficult part is trying to make something nice. That is why you cannot force it. That's why these music competition are so long. You just have to get something and just roll with it. I recently submitted a composition for a score call for the Orlando Philharmonic. My piece was a little less than 5 minutes long, but it took me about 2 months to write it. That kinda puts some things into perspective. I suggest you go for it, though. Go for it and see what comes out of your fingers.
Posted by: Starmang Aug 6 2008, 06:36 AM
hmm. I downloaded Noteworthy composer, but all I can get is piano sounds. Is there any way to get drum kit beats or guitar notes?
Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 6 2008, 09:18 AM
I don't have the program in front of me right now, so I can't help you there, but just keep fiddling with it and look around in the Help file and I'm sure you can find what you're looking for.
Posted by: Starmang Aug 6 2008, 11:33 AM
Thanks very much for your helpful advice I'll think i'll stay out of this comp, but I'll try and make on for the next
Posted by: MC Jimmy Aug 6 2008, 01:33 PM
Can you submit more then one song?
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 6 2008, 01:36 PM | ||
If you want to do a multi-movement thing, I think that would be fine. You can only enter one entry, though. |
Posted by: MC Jimmy Aug 6 2008, 01:40 PM
EH, I guess I'll have to think about which one I want to submit then... Brb...
Posted by: MC Jimmy Aug 6 2008, 01:51 PM

Replacing mah entry
Posted by: MimfyiLLusion Aug 6 2008, 08:41 PM
Hey can I enter this music comp? If so, the song I'm entering I call http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs32/f/2008/219/b/7/Tetrillusion__and_Tetristorm_by_vsaadam.mp3 since when played at a less-spooky tempo, or different instrument, it sounds kinda like the tetris theme. (Which was the inspiration of this song) (My name on deviantart is vsaadam, I decided that I wanted a knew name here... it says so on the description of the deviation that I submitted it in, I'm just pointing that out so people don't think I stole it...) I think I might have over-done it a bit with the thunderbolts... But it's suppose to be spooky, so I don't think it's too much...

That would be ARMADA. As in "The Spanish Armada". :\ Everyone does that, so don't take too much offense to that. |

Ladies and gentlemen, to assure the absolut fairness in voting, there has to be, like Yoshiman said, a new thread for voting. The thread should have the competition entrants and their works on the first post of it so the chances that someone would vote before listening to every entry is lowered. I have to leave soon, so I do not have the time to make the thread until the afternoon, but could someone please step up and make one?
