| Before we get to the subject at hand, congrats to Cinossu for getting second place and the rest of the entries for entering and having awesome submissions! Okay, now onto the next music competition, this one shall be interesting. Pikaboo and I call it "If you were the composer..." Basically, you're going to come up with an original composition for a particular game. It's going to be Mario Kart 64 this time. No specific track, you choose. Go onto YouTube and find videos of your favourite track, or play the game yourself, and turn off the volume. Don't ever think about what song is on that track, your job is to create your own original piece that fits that. Think about how you would have done the music for the game if they asked you to make the music for it. Make sure when you submit it, that you specify what track you made the song for. Aaaaaaand GO! Entries are due December 24th! |

| Entering this I'm just not sure which track I want to do. I'm leaning towards Kalimari Desert though |

COP-OUT unless you do some ultra-elite 3 minute composition for it, then by jove, do it |
| Posted by: MC Jimmy Nov 30 2008, 01:15 AM |
| A good contest this time. |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Nov 30 2008, 01:15 AM |
| I really want to increase my music creation skills to past creating beats. So I might join, if I have any time (^-^) And is calling dibs here necessary? Just saying because it seems like there are a limited amount of tracks. Then again, there's a small number of participators, no? Meh. In any case, I'll see what I can do about something for Sherbet Land. |

Woah ho ho! |
| Posted by: Avice Nov 30 2008, 01:20 AM |
| Hi everybody! My name is Avice Patenaude, I'm from France (But I live in the USA). I'm just making my first post here, I was recommended by a friend to join and enter this competition. I am a signed avante musician, and I think I would be able to contribute to this competition well. Excuse my English as it is at times not perfect, but I can usually get my point down. Thanks for setting up this forum, and holding a nice competition. Expect to see my entry sometime soon! Hello to everybody I haven't met! I'm sure that's all of you, but you never know. Is there a length limit to how long our music must be? My pieces tend to be 15 minutes to an hour, but I shall try and keep it limited to three minutes or such for this song. |
| Posted by: Zephyra Nov 30 2008, 01:23 AM | ||
Who's this friend? |

| im thinking that im gonna do frappe snowland |
| Posted by: Tri Nov 30 2008, 03:28 AM | ||
NO but it makes you look flasy and edgy PLUS if you call dibs you seem to have somewhat the upper hand for that particular song! Besides, I don't actually think we ever have enough people to make calling dibs on a song valid since there'll probably be some songs which won't be remixed in the end anyway due to the lack of contestants |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Nov 30 2008, 03:31 AM | ||
I thought so. I'm just so used to calling dibs on a Drawing or Minigame Competition because I'm afraid people will take the idea and I'll have to make a new one. (^-^) I'll edit my post. To top it off, it's original compositions so the odds someone would create the exact same thing as me is zero to none, deshou? |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Nov 30 2008, 05:58 AM |
| Why Mario Kart 64? WHY? It's the only Mario Kart game I haven't played. Well, I could try to whip something up. And dibs are stupid. If I want to make a song for Kalimari Desert or Sherbet Land, I'll make it. Dibs don't stop me. |
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Nov 30 2008, 11:29 AM |
| It would actually be pretty cool, I think, if two people wrote pieces for the same track! Compare those to the original and boom, money Welcome, Avice! I look forward to what you have to offer to this arena! |

| Here's an alpha of my submission, I've worked maybe 9 to 11 hours on this, so far. I've still quite a few things to modify, add, or edit out (There were a couple seconds of unwanted guitar feedback) So, here you all go! Alpha #1 of Bowser's Castle Entry. http://www.mediafire.com/?oaw0gfjl3wj Comments and criticism are greatly welcome, and requested. By the way, did I make it a bit too dark? Looking at it a second time, Bowser's Castle is still a bit cartoony. |
| Posted by: Project_MK Nov 30 2008, 11:46 PM | ||
I hear no music in this, only screeches and bleeps. Is it supposed to be a .wav? |
| Posted by: Avice Nov 30 2008, 11:48 PM |
| Yes, it is supposed to be a .wav. It is compressed to the quality of a 320 kbps mp3, though, so that explains the moderate filesize. No music in it? Gee, what thoughtful criticism. |
| Posted by: Project_MK Dec 1 2008, 12:00 AM | ||
What I mean is that I can't hear anything but... Well it sounds like those ear rape videos YTPers make. |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 1 2008, 12:01 AM | ||
What are those? I don't believe I've ever encountered one. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 1 2008, 12:01 AM | ||
No, seriously, this is a disqualifying entry, because there's no music. At all. I thought at first you were experimenting with extreme sound clipping distortion filters, until I kept listening and found out it's through-out the entire song. You might want to check your wav rendering - I think something screwed up all the way through the processing, have you actually listened back to your wav file? |

| Are you sure that Avice's entry is not music? I mean, Naxos (a big international music label) has an entire CD of Jorgen Plaetner's works, so why can't this be admitted? I actually liked it a lot! (No, anything regarding my personal "edginess" never crossed my mind.) I boundaries of music are constantly being expanded (a lot like the universe). Who are we to decide what is music (art) and what isn't? |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 1 2008, 12:47 AM |
| ... okay, time to find out what programs Avice and Tony are using to play this wave file, because the rest of us are getting, literally, not opinion-based, but cold-hard-fact-based static and noises, and not any music what-so-ever. |
| Posted by: Hohoo Dec 1 2008, 02:48 AM | ||
I took this as an offence. |
| Posted by: Zephyra Dec 1 2008, 07:52 AM |
| I opened up Avice's entry in Audacity and there's a song there, but it looks like it was amplified to a degree where it clipped any recognizable music and left it with just static http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/4662/avicebcil8.png I can see that there's supposed to be a song there and I don't think I'm hearing what I'm supposed to |
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Dec 1 2008, 08:06 AM |
| I'm pretty sure Avice said he was an avant garde person earlier, so what I heard (the .wav played in RealPlayer) was not unexpected Maybe he could find another hosting spot to host a better file or something? |

| Awesome job so far, Tri! |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 1 2008, 09:51 PM | ||
Well, if Avice's wave file is really supposed to be the way it sounds at this moment, like the rendering went haywire and there's no music present at all (I can only make out some bells), then it really can't be entered. |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Dec 1 2008, 10:24 PM |
| Not sure how well it fits, or if it even sounds like mario kart, but here's my W.I.P. entry for Frappe Snowland. http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=c4a62986a9daef7491b20cc0d07ba4d280cb85221ec703fb |

| Kane... AIM me sometime and maybe I can help you. Those are some sweet tunes, and I think we can do a lot with them. I'd enter independently, but I have a big video project due and I'm tossing around the idea of composing my own stuff for it. |

| Posted by: MC Jimmy Dec 4 2008, 01:07 PM |
| Does it have to be a certain length? Cus I only got a 40second loop. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 4 2008, 01:32 PM | ||
Not really, but obviously the shorter you make it, the less they'll like it and have to critique on - and on the other hand, if you make it too long, it'll drag on too long for people (unless you make a medley, see the last competition). |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 4 2008, 11:41 PM |
| Hey everybody, it's Avice again. Few things to say. 1) Yes, it was supposed to sound like that, but it was the first work of the like I have ever done. Looking at the first couple entries, I noticed that they were 100% electronic, and I'd have to adjust my style quite a bit to fit in at all. Obviously, this did not work whatsoever, and it seem nobody liked the end result. That's all fine. Another problem was limiting my work to such a small time as 3:00, which allows for no tonal development or evolution. The piece was recorded and made entirely with six things, an AM Radio, an amplifier, a guitar (if only for feedback), a cordless phone, Audacity, and a broken MIDI keyboard which only generates static. Hah, I love noise music, but I really am not good at making it myself. 2) I've completely discarded any remains of the previous entry, even though I left the file available to download. If any of you wish to give me a second chance, I will make another piece, using a guitar, electronic tones (to create a melody), a working piano, maybe even with a beat in it! Although if I do make this, it will be for a different level, it will be slower, with acoustic drones, and I will have to make it slightly longer. I assume none of you have ADD, so eight minutes would be fine with you? 3) I'm a girl, not a 'he'. |
| Posted by: shroomguy Dec 4 2008, 11:43 PM |
| Might come up with something. |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Dec 4 2008, 11:46 PM | ||
Well, that really depends on how good you make it. If it's just not that good, I won't want to listen to 8 minutes of it. |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 4 2008, 11:53 PM |
| Well, obviously. I was just wondering if any of you would give me a second chance after that apparent abomination I produced before. |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Dec 4 2008, 11:59 PM |
| Well, from what I could understand, we need a special codec to listen to your .wav file. I'm sure it sounds fine, but we can't really hear it. Mind telling me what you are using to open? Unless you meant your song to sound like a bunch of random bleeps and bloops. |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 5 2008, 12:02 AM |
| Random bleeps and bloops? I think you need a better audio setup, man! XD EDIT: Although I did use a lot of uncommon frequencies, which probably wouldn't produce any sound at all on a lesser stereo system and/or low quality earphones/earbuds, so it's my fault, really. I should have predicted that. In the end, if you took out all the high/low musical elements, you WOULD be left with just random noise. My mistake. In this new piece, I'll try and make sure everything stays in a normal range, except for my favorite soul crushing 132 hz. EDIT: And I'm using Windows Media Player, with a large number of added codecs. Although I also use Foobar and Winamp, occasionally. |
| Posted by: Pikax Dec 5 2008, 06:28 AM |
| Just as I was getting the urge to compose something. Brilliant. Now which track should I go for ... the obvious choice of Mario Circuit. EDIT: To be honest, I like the Mario Circuit music from Mario Kart 64, so my entry is probably going to have a few similarities. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 5 2008, 01:57 PM |
| Avice, of course you can get a second chance. As long as I'm hosting a competition, I'll give anyone an unlimited number of chances until they get a song that they and everyone else can like. The only thing is, you need to choose which one will be the entry. So that's noise music? Wow. I love every single genre of music, and I never knew there would be a single one that I was iffy about. Though it reminds me of that program that played songs that were supposed to give you drug-like highs or whatever that was. Also sorry for the automatic gender assumption. |

in b4 Kissing Booth Theory. |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 5 2008, 06:20 PM |
| Kissing booth theory? And DJ Yoshiman, that was not at all a good example of noise music, I didn't like it myself. Toss me a PM, and I'll show you some quality stuff of the genre. My favorite music consists of drone/doom/noise/ambient/jazz/blues/psychedelic rock (And of course, other forms of psychedelia), black metal, power electronics, and field recordings. EDIT: In my eyes, the four Gods of noise are Merzbow, The Cherry Point, Kylie Minoise, and Masonna. EDIT2: Do you like any drone, DJ? |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 5 2008, 06:28 PM |
| Drone is a pretty good genre. I don't know if it would fit any Mario Kart track, though. I think you might want to think about watching the Mario Kart track of your choice intently - if it's been on more than one game, watch both games - try to envelop your head around the track, get a really good feeling of it, and then go for something that would fit. Also, http://wiki.mfgg.net/index.php/Kissing_Booth_Theory. |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 5 2008, 06:37 PM |
| Err, no, I wasn't talking about MAKING drone for a mario kart game. I just meant in general. You're a fan of drone as well? Favorite bands? |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 5 2008, 06:42 PM |
| I'm not a fan, I just know it's a good genre. That's one of the genres I don't have any particular favourable bands in, though. |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 5 2008, 06:43 PM |
| How does that work? o. o |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 5 2008, 06:44 PM | ||
By... listening to drone music and not having a favourite band for that genre. |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 5 2008, 06:47 PM |
| Oh, sorry, I read that wrong, I had thought you said you didn't know of any bands in the genre, but you enjoy listening to it. You need to check out Long Night by Jim o'Rourke, it must be the most beautiful thing I've ever listened to. Eliane Radigue is also an amazing artist of the genre. Edit: Capitalization. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 5 2008, 06:49 PM |
| Well, PM me or IM me if you want to continue the discussion, we're sort of derailing the topic here. |
| Posted by: Avice Dec 5 2008, 06:54 PM |
| Ah, right, sorry about that. You can go right ahead and delete this series of useless posts, if you wish. Can you join IRC? That would be faster than PM, and I have no IM clients installed. |
| Posted by: MC Jimmy Dec 6 2008, 12:09 PM |
| I tried my best... http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/12/16/518239/Mario%20Kart.ogg I'm sure this would fit somewheres into one of the tracks or battle stages. Might change it later. Also put it on loop. |
| Posted by: LocoRoo Dec 6 2008, 01:22 PM | ||
Aren't you like... supposed to know which track you're making music for? |
| Posted by: MC Jimmy Dec 6 2008, 02:00 PM |
| I figure it doesn't really matter what part of the game it would go to and long as it sounds like it goes in it somewheres. |

| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Dec 17 2008, 12:40 PM |
| Well, considering that the last one lasted 2 months to account for NCFC, and everyone was sort of used to it, I could extend it another week. Especially since the Secret Santa started. yeah i'm-a do that entries are due by the 24th - voting will occur after Christmas and Boxing Day |
