| http://archive.mfgg.net/index.php?showtopic=229829&view=findpost&p=3335855 Thanks for the votes, guys. Congratulations also to NicktendoDS and Pikaboo for their runner up entries in the last competition. This time, I am looking for a song of the sea. It can be pirate song; it can be a jaunty sea melody; it can be a sailor love ballad. Whatever you choose, it should call to mind the ocean. If you are having trouble, try using the instruments typically associated with the 17th and 18th centuries. Think accordions and string instruments. Of course, don't let these suggestions limit you. Synthesizers and electric guitars are perfectly fine as long as you can capture the spirit of the seas in your song. This competition will end February 3. If you need extension time, contact me via PM or through a post in this topic. |

Obviously. Though it does help that sailing, and the ocean are in my blood. My Dad windsurfs, my Grandfather was painter who loved the sea, my Dad's best friend (RIP) was a fisherman, lived on a lake the lucky guy, and I basically live in the ocean in the summer. The list goes on! Guess I'm a "Finn" for a good reason. Better keep working! |
| Posted by: Black Boo Jan 13 2009, 10:40 PM | ||
I live on a lake too... It's kinda peacefull in the summer... And I actually am a sailor. Maybe this will be easy for me. |

| Posted by: Crescent Jan 20 2009, 04:22 AM |
| I think I'm a pretty decent MIDI maker so I could try to enter this. Would an underwater music like the SMB1 underwater music be okay? I'd do a sort of a tropical pirate remix of it |
| Posted by: Raspy Jan 24 2009, 04:06 PM | ||
Woah! This sounds awesome! What program you use to make this? |
| Posted by: kremling Jan 24 2009, 06:03 PM |
| What software do yall use for this competition? |
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Jan 24 2009, 06:12 PM | ||
I use Sibelius 4 |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Jan 24 2009, 06:13 PM | ||
Some use Anvil Studio. Some use trackers (like Modplug Tracker or Fast Tracker II) Some use FL Studio or similar programs Some are like me, and use Modplug Tracker, FL Studio, Cubase, Tracktion 2, etc and then also use physical items like mixers, acoustic instruments, digital recorders, mics, etc etc. |
| Posted by: JetSetRaïn Jan 30 2009, 02:18 PM |
| I've never been one for the competitions, but maybe I'll join in this one. |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Jan 30 2009, 09:16 PM |
| Here's my entry: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=d163739b02159dfa6e7203eb87368129e04e75f6e8ebb871 I screwed up the ending a bit, but I don't have much time to edit it. I actually like how the beginning and middle came out, though, as this is perhaps the first music project that I took seriously without just randomly placing notes. |
| Posted by: MR.1UP Jan 31 2009, 05:26 PM |
| kind of a noob question here but... does it have to sound 8-bit? if not then ima try and make a song an enter! |
| Posted by: MR.1UP Jan 31 2009, 05:36 PM |
| lol wait nevermind should of checked when it would end.. its too late for me to finish in like 2 days without rushin lol! |
| Posted by: shroomguy Jan 31 2009, 05:41 PM |
| Lack of entries here! |
| Posted by: MR.1UP Jan 31 2009, 05:47 PM | ||
lol ok ok I'LL TRY! hahahaha but im not a master yet lol like you. |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Jan 31 2009, 05:47 PM | ||
Since Mario music can't technically be defined in someway (at least I think so), there are no limitations unless the competition starter clearly states said limitations (If he says "Music must be 8-bit", then it must be 8-bit. If it must be 30 seconds in length, it must not go over that length.) Also, you aren't exactly too late to enter. There are only two entries present, and we need at least a total of 5 to start voting. Unless we get a flock of entries the last few days, you should have plenty of time. |
| Posted by: shroomguy Jan 31 2009, 05:51 PM | ||
It doesn't have to be Mario music either. |
| Posted by: MR.1UP Jan 31 2009, 05:53 PM |
| ok thank you both! now... TO FL STUDIO!!! |
| Posted by: Soiyeruda Jan 31 2009, 05:58 PM | ||
I never said it had to be Mario music. I said that you are only limited by what the competition starter limits you to. |
| Posted by: MR.1UP Jan 31 2009, 08:28 PM |
| oooooook here is my entry!! it is a very calm song.. lol i hope you all hear the "Ocean Feeling" in it cause i do! http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?kdii2mmybvk |
| Posted by: Toadster Jan 31 2009, 08:40 PM | ||
i don't hear it entirely, but this is a pretty sweet job for only a few hours! |
| Posted by: MR.1UP Jan 31 2009, 09:31 PM | ||
lol thank you man |
| Posted by: Pucifur Jan 31 2009, 11:27 PM |
| I'll wrap my project up and post here soon. |

| Posted by: MR.1UP Feb 1 2009, 12:01 AM | ||
high 5!! |
| Posted by: Mokun Feb 1 2009, 10:21 AM |
| I think I'll try to whip something up for once! It doesn't have to be made entirely on the computer though, right? |
| Posted by: Fender Feb 1 2009, 10:25 AM | ||
you can make it however you'd like. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Feb 1 2009, 11:17 AM | ||
Like Fender said, it can be produced however the hell you want, as long as the result is listenable in a digital format via most common media players. |
| Posted by: Mokun Feb 1 2009, 06:44 PM | ||
Great! Edit: Ugh, I just can't seem to get into this subject. I'll wait till the next one. |
| Posted by: shroomguy Feb 2 2009, 09:26 PM |
| Coming towards the end. ONE DAY GUYS |

| Posted by: Pucifur Feb 3 2009, 12:45 AM |
| I don't mean to always be the lame leg in these things, but I need more time. I went without power for a lot of last week due to winter storms, so if no one is opposed, I would like a few more days. |
| Posted by: Keyser Soze Feb 3 2009, 03:29 PM |
| Whoa I forgot these things existed, music is like, all I fucking do, I MUST CONTRIBUTE |
| Posted by: MR.1UP Feb 5 2009, 04:56 PM |

| Posted by: kane]deth[ Feb 5 2009, 10:10 PM | ||

| Posted by: MR.1UP Feb 6 2009, 10:13 AM | ||
Ok i guess i'm cool with that... but that's just me! SO EVERYONE COOL WITH THE 13th!! |
| Posted by: Hohoo Feb 6 2009, 11:09 AM |
| Made this in a few days. (It's actually for Mushroom Kingdom Emissary, but it has quite an oceany feeling.) It's made in Rosegarden and converted into an Ogg Vorbis with Timidity. It's not that good but it's the only thing I currently have. |
| Posted by: Zephyra Feb 8 2009, 01:03 PM |
| All I could throw together was this WIP http://www.box.net/shared/rtioskt3gg It would be much better but I can't work on it this week mecause my music making computer is only accessible on weekends Kick could use some Equalizing and lots of instruments need effects so Ugh, and I should have looped the last 8 bars. It would have sounded a lot better >: Too late now |
| Posted by: Tri Feb 8 2009, 02:18 PM |
| This is the song of the sea I never bothered to finish. I figured I'd post it since it's kinda cool! |
| Posted by: MC Jimmy Feb 10 2009, 11:51 PM |
| Would an underwater song be allowed? It's technically part of the sea... |
| Posted by: Pucifur Feb 12 2009, 08:38 PM | ||
yes |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Feb 12 2009, 10:02 PM |

Aren't you suppose to vote for 5 people? Even if the other ones aren't as good? |
| Posted by: JetSetRaïn Feb 18 2009, 05:26 PM | ||
I was going to come back and edit the last three in when I finished choosing, sorry. Pickaboo and Tri were the best in my opinion, so I couldn't choose between the two. |
| Posted by: MR.1UP Feb 18 2009, 07:04 PM |
| Soiyeruda ShroomGuy Pucifur Tri Mc Jimmy |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Feb 18 2009, 08:48 PM |
| Well, I started critiquing every single entry, but before I got to MC Jimmy, I was led to a different tab and managed to accidentally close the wrong tab. I'm not writing all that critique out again, so let me sum it up this way: There were only 5 people that managed to hold the actual feeling of either the sea, underwater, or on a pirate ship. The rest of you did good jobs, but there were either instrumentation or methods that didn't particularly get such a feeling pat down. Soiteruda MR.1UP Tri MC Jimmy Pucifur |

Well, more like a Top 6. I'd suggest getting in a few more votes, but I don't know if that's possible. |
