MFGG Message Boards: Archives > Music Competitions > Music Comp #16 - Get your desert groove on!

Posted by: Littlink Jul 17 2009, 02:18 PM
Haha, grats to the top three from #15, cool stuff!Let's see if I do this right~

Okay so you're in this desert and suddenly you decide to make MUSIC.

Yes the desert. You're job, participants, is to capture the feeling of the gritty and barren landscape. The sun baking down on the dunes, maybe an oasis in the distance to cool off in! Usually the desert means sitar abuse but go ahead!

That means make a piece of music that captures the desert. You can create an original piece BUT if you're not up to that, go and find some and remix one of the Mario desert themes. A few I can think of off the top of my head are Gritzy Desert from Mario & Luigi, the Desert theme from NSMB and whatever was in the original Paper Mario.

I dunno how long this should be, maybe
a month from now, that means August 17th!

Gritzy Desert from Mario & Luigi,

for the record the desert was really called Teehee Valley, not Gritzy Desert

This shall prove interesting for me.

Congratulations.

Here is mine (it's not a remix):
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?jttiwlzyzmn

It loops twice, and on the second loop it is transposed.

Edit: I am going to update this again sometime before the competition finishes.

Edit 2: I have scrapped this and I want it withdrawed from the competition if possible ie pretend I never posted in this thread.

Will I be allowed to remix one of my original pieces I made a while back?

I don't see why not, since you're allowing people to remix Mario music

Not to seem like a jerk here, but I really would appreciate some advice about how to make this better.

And Zeph-Yeah, that's fine. As long as it's new, and made by you!

In the middle to end of your song it seemed like you just threw some random notes in there that really wasn't even matching the song. :/

This is very nice, shroomguy. You should be very proud of yourself. If I saw someone recruit you as the composer for their game, I'd know the soundtrack would be nothing short of flush with the game.

You write very well to the idea of "video game music" which is "background music". The music is the background to the gameplay. For that purpose, what you have is excellent. I believe that music in video games can be sonically engaging, though. I don't like the relatively virgin and stable direction your piece goes through. It would loop just fine, but I think background music can be much more than that. That is just my take on it (and you'll hear that if you listen to my entry).

The dialogue between the two sitars is a bit unsettling. It seems very shaky and haphazard. If you were going for that effect, it backfired and made it look like YOU don't know what you're doing. There are a few tonalities that I'm not a huge fan of, I'd just like to see more direction with the melody line and less dead air. The percussion in the back is very nice.

You done a really good job, though, shroomguy.

Posted by: shroomguy Jul 29 2009, 12:54 AM
Tony, that is probably some of the first REAL advice I've received in a long time. I really like the way it turned out, though the people I've showed it to enjoyed the sitars back and forth for the most part. Guess it's sorta hit or miss really.

I MIGHT go back and change it one last time, but I don't know if I can make the sitars flow together perfectly...I really have little experience with Sitars (BIG SHOCK GASP) but I suppose it will come down to a matter of taste with this one.

As for your piece, I loved the way it sounded, it flew together well for the most part, though for some reason brass doesn't strike me as very "dessert" Again, a matter of taste. I wouldn't exactly find this playing in the background of a level, but I could definitely see this in a store of some sort.
I feel like the notes could be just a tad higher,(maybe a bit sharper? idk) on some parts, but overall this is pretty damn good.

Excellent job, you should also be proud of yourself.

Ahh, cool stuff. Personally though I felt the song was kinda empty right until you added the bongos and stuff right near the end, really cool! Still a great tune, dude. B)

For some reason the songs I do for these competitions tend to be not so great as my actual ones.

And nobody writes that good music software for GNU/Linux as there is for the one beginning with W. LMMS is the best one there is, but it crashes somewhat often and while it has some great plugins (Gameboy sound emulator, SID emulator etc.) it lacks in automation and such things.
