| MFGG Message Boards: Archives > Music Competitions > Music Competition #17 - If You Were the Composer 2 |
| Posted by: Zephyra Aug 20 2009, 05:09 PM |
| Alright, Congrats for Hohoo and Shroomguy for getting second place. T'was a bit unfair that People started voting before Hohoo's entry was uploaded, but he came close. This competition's theme is If You Were The Composer 2! The game you will be "composing" for will be Mario 64. For those who aren't familiar with this: 1- Choose an area in said game 2- Ignore the music made for that area 3- Create a piece of music that will fit the area's atmosphere It's quite fun. Many people get a different feel for an area depending on the music, or the area itself inspires music. If you need help, watch walkthrough videos on mute, or play the game with sound turned off! I'll give you guys a month and a half because school is starting/has started. Top 5 voting begins October 3. I may lower it in time, but let's go with this for now. Off you go, laddies |

| Taking the Bowser levels. |
| Posted by: shroomguy Aug 20 2009, 05:20 PM |
| Wow a month and a half I might take Dire Dire Docks |
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 20 2009, 06:02 PM |
| We have to reserve what area we are working with? :? |
| Posted by: Baroque Aug 20 2009, 07:31 PM | ||
I think they're just stating what they're interesting in trying. Yoshiman likes to play on expert mode, apparently. |
| Posted by: Kyori Aug 20 2009, 07:57 PM | ||
No fair! Hmm, I'm going to have to play through again, I can't remember half of the areas. |
| Posted by: shroomguy Aug 20 2009, 07:57 PM |
| Sticky please |
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 20 2009, 08:00 PM | ||
With a month-and-a-half of time to work on this, I don't see any merit in calling out a big part of your game plan the day-of. I guess my mileage varies. |
| Posted by: Kritter Aug 20 2009, 08:02 PM |
| Can I call the Bowser Battle theme? Not the cool organ one but the other one. |
| Posted by: Kyori Aug 20 2009, 08:02 PM | ||
Game plan? D: |
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 20 2009, 08:05 PM | ||
Well, yeah This call is, essentially, an exercise in film scoring (video game scoring, really). With so many options in "Super Mario 64", why "call" your scene now, before you've even started? Things can, and probably will, change six weeks from now. |
| Posted by: shroomguy Aug 20 2009, 08:06 PM | ||
Doho, Kritter! This should be interesting. |
| Posted by: Shyguy Grey Aug 20 2009, 08:44 PM |
| Just throuwing this out in the open, after you make your song, you are free to offer it for the CFP. It'd really help. |
| Posted by: shroomguy Aug 20 2009, 08:50 PM | ||
I thought every song was free to use most of the the time, like the sprites in sprite competitions |
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 20 2009, 09:01 PM |
| I haven't payed attention to most of the Music Competitions, but I don't think any of us bother with copyright issues, so, technically, all of what we post is "free music". I'll put up that any of my music that I've posted here can be used by a fangamer. I don't have any problems with that. |
| Posted by: Shyguy Grey Aug 20 2009, 09:12 PM | ||
Although that is true, for a project like this, people might want to have a say in it. |
| Posted by: Kyori Aug 20 2009, 09:29 PM | ||
I seriously doubt everybody will stick to the scenes they're calling out, and it's not like 2 people can't do the same level. People call out like this in all the competitions, it's just so that people know what they might be expecting; it's not set in stone or anything. EDIT: @SGG - Everything I make, unless I do it for a specific project, is completely free for anybody to do anything they want with it. So no quibbles from me if you guys want to use my entry! (if I get it finished this time D:) |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Aug 21 2009, 01:03 AM |
| there's absolutely nothing wrong with two or more people doing the same song/area, after all, it provides more input as to the views of several people we just like to state it to allow others to know i like to state it to remind myself because half the time i'm like "wait shit what am i doing again *checks post*" |
| Posted by: shroomguy Aug 21 2009, 01:25 AM | ||
Basically this Dire Dire docks becomes the menu theme then it becomes the ice world place and then it's ffff |
| Posted by: Hohoo Aug 21 2009, 06:14 AM |
| I'll try Dire Dire Docks too. http://koti.mbnet.fi/hohoo/romuvarasto/secrethaven.ogg I find it quite soothing. It has 3/4 measure, Steinway grand piano soundfont and some Super Mario Galaxy feel too. |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Aug 21 2009, 08:35 PM |
| I wanted Dire, Dire Docks. Jolly Rodger Bay for me, which has the same music, but whatever. Edit: Hohoo, yours sounds a bit... odd. Seems to be using augmented intervals, or something (can't remember if that's the right one). I like the idea, though. And the background wahwah whatever is in a different key than the xylophone. |
| Posted by: shroomguy Aug 21 2009, 09:22 PM |
| Fine take DDD W/e It's not like SM64 had no levels besides that |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Aug 21 2009, 09:24 PM | ||
Actually, I have a feeling that what I'm going to compose will fit the underground whatever place that I forgot the name of, so I'll use that. |
| Posted by: Kritter Aug 21 2009, 09:24 PM |
| It doesn't matter how many people take Dire Dire Docks because you're all going to come up with a song that should replace the song for that level, in the end they'll all be vastly different. |
| Posted by: Baroque Aug 21 2009, 09:26 PM | ||
Well, they'll be different, but they do all need to fit the same atmosphere. ... I suppose if some people got a different impression of the level, then it would increase the variance between songs, though. |
| Posted by: Tony Trombone Aug 21 2009, 09:37 PM | ||
That's why these competitions are so interesting! We are all different people and have different ideas of what some "atmosphere" or "feeling" should be. |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Aug 21 2009, 09:55 PM | ||
And was the last competition not a single atmosphere? EDIT: Also, doing Rainbow Ride Okay, there's no way I'm going to be able to make a good song with freeware crap, and definitely not without a MIDI keyboard. And the FL studio demo doesn't let you save project files. |
| Posted by: Kritter Aug 21 2009, 11:42 PM | ||
Tony speaks the truth. My idea of the right atmosphere for Rainbow Ride for example is probably completely different to someone elses. So plenty of Dire Dire Docks for all I say! |
| Posted by: shroomguy Aug 21 2009, 11:50 PM |
| I might change later on I dunno. We're never exactly pressed for time in these, it's just a matter of getting it done. |
| Posted by: Baroque Aug 22 2009, 01:04 AM | ||
I wasn't here for the last competition. I missed it and I'm really too lazy to go check. But yeah, most of these music competitions have been like that I guess. |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Aug 22 2009, 08:40 AM | ||
Are you using Rainbow Ride because I mentioned it, or because you're stealing my idea? >:( Oh, well, I'll probably make mine way better than yours. But in all seriousness, I'll find some way to make a good song work. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Aug 22 2009, 06:02 PM |
| Change of plan - I got a wicked idea and I'm now doing the Haunted House. yes including the Merry-Go-Round |
| Posted by: Kritter Aug 22 2009, 08:39 PM | ||
Nah I was going to do the Bowser Battle music but now i'm not sure. I'll pick something if I get time =P |
| Posted by: Foshi Aug 23 2009, 07:46 AM |
| sounds interesting, might try something |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Aug 23 2009, 10:31 AM | ||
That's nothing compared to the Jolly Rodger Bay music that I thought of. The only reason that had the same music as Dire, Dire, Docks was because the N64 only has so much memory (although they probably could have, anyways). I think this one fits JRB better. |
| Posted by: Foshi Aug 24 2009, 11:13 AM |
| I have an awesome idea for Tick Tock Clock, let's hope i'm not to lazy to finish it EDIT: started it, changing to haunted house though |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Aug 26 2009, 07:10 PM |
| Wait, so it has to be an area in the game? Does the include inside the castle, and around it? |
| Posted by: Dark Yoshi Aug 28 2009, 05:24 PM |
| remix "im on a boat" for rainbow ride |
| Posted by: MC Jimmy Aug 29 2009, 09:05 PM |
| I might do something, depending on my lazy scale. |
| Posted by: kane]deth[ Aug 29 2009, 09:07 PM | ||
|
| Posted by: Shyguy Grey Aug 29 2009, 09:08 PM | ||
It says an area in the game, not a level, so I believe the castle and whatnot are fair game. |
| Posted by: Kyori Aug 30 2009, 07:11 AM |
| Anywhere that it would make sense for there to be a change to a new music track is what I'm thinking. |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Sep 1 2009, 11:31 AM |
| Any music in the game is good. I'm even doing the ending and credits, and Zephy said that was fine for me to do. :3 |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Sep 1 2009, 02:54 PM |
| so bam http://brosofcanada.sepwich.com/M64HauntedHouseReplace-DJYoshiman.mp3 Beginning - Falling into the level 0:03 - Inside the Haunted House 0:27 - More inside the Haunted House 0:47 - Falling into the Merry-Go-Round area 0:50 - Merry-Go-Round area 1:27 - Outside the Haunted House |
| Posted by: MC Jimmy Sep 4 2009, 02:09 PM |
| Kind of upset I can't think of anything good. Whelp anyways I tried to do something for Jolly Roger Bay. It loops around 1:25? http://mcjimmy.dorino.net/Music/Diverging%20Diving.mp3 |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Sep 4 2009, 02:15 PM |
| DJ, not liking that percussion. It just seems to be more of something to divert from the actual song rather than provide a beat. Only seem to like outside and the beginning of the merry-go-round. MC, I like it, but there should be more dynamics rather than adding on the different parts/instruments. It seems a bit bland. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Sep 4 2009, 02:34 PM | ||
Agreed. I have fixed it now. |
| Posted by: CaptainSyrup Sep 5 2009, 01:01 PM |
| I guess I'll try Tick Tock Clock. Here's what I have so far. All I have is Anvil Studio, so it's a MIDI. When I think of Tick Tock Clock, I think of a level that requires you to solve puzzles, and think awhile. So this piece is pretty slow and stuff. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9XOE2RDD |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Sep 19 2009, 07:35 AM |
| Why is it rendered as MP3 if it's MIDI? :/ |
| Posted by: Kyori Sep 19 2009, 09:41 AM | ||
So it sounds the same to everybody, instead of being dependent on the hardware it's being played on? |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Sep 21 2009, 01:13 AM | ||
but i like using soundfonts to make the midi's sound more awesome |
| Posted by: shroomguy Sep 21 2009, 07:06 PM | ||
NO YOSHIMAN YOU NEED TO USE REAL INSTRUMENTS ONLY AAAHHHH |
| Posted by: CaptainSyrup Sep 21 2009, 07:55 PM | ||
Soundfonts? I didn't know these existed. Thanks! |
| Posted by: Kyori Sep 21 2009, 07:56 PM | ||
aaaaaaaaaa no what VSTis ftw. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Sep 23 2009, 02:45 AM | ||
not when it comes to a wide variety of accurate-sounding acoustic instruments |
| Posted by: Kyori Sep 23 2009, 08:53 AM | ||
Except that's exactly when it's useful. I have VSTs for pretty much every instrument you can think of, and they sound perfect. Once you get the hang of triggering certain performance techniques at the right time you can make them sound exactly like the real thing. I rarely record anything anymore, the only thing I've recorded recently is vocals. I just don't need to. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Sep 24 2009, 01:34 AM | ||
which you can do just as well with soundfonts/samples only the samples and soundfonts are recorded so they sound like the acoustic instrument as opposed to a digital recreation of an acoustic equipment |
| Posted by: Kyori Sep 24 2009, 08:41 AM | ||
Which is exactly what I'm talking about. VST doesn't necessarily mean synth. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Sep 26 2009, 04:01 AM | ||
then it's a VSTi using samples which to me seems pointless when i'd much rather use the samples the way i want to myself |
| Posted by: Kyori Sep 26 2009, 08:47 AM | ||
It's still a VSTi, regardless of whether it uses a synth or samples. Why sacrifice simplicity just to achieve a little more control, when the majority of the time you're not going to need it? Sample VSTis treat the collected samples as one instrument; some of the better ones even feature the performance techniques I mentioned earlier. If I needed to mess about with a particular sample then they're always there for me to use and abuse as individual WAV files, but I would never make a batch trade-off between complete MIDI control and having to manually insert samples. It's just not worth the extra effort for absolutely no extra control. |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Sep 26 2009, 10:04 AM |
| gaaaaaah this ends soon I need to actually put down my music on the computer, now. |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Sep 27 2009, 12:48 PM | ||
depends on the vsti i suppose i've seen some sampler vsti's that are ridiculously limited |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Sep 27 2009, 12:51 PM |
| where did my VSTi folder go Don't leave meeeeee |
| Posted by: DJ Yoshiman Sep 27 2009, 12:54 PM | ||
look for a Steinberg folder if you don't have one then feel obliged to smack yourself |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Sep 27 2009, 01:09 PM | ||
not to worry; I found it! now, on to composing |
| Posted by: CaptainSyrup Sep 30 2009, 08:18 PM |
| http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9XOE2RDD This is my completed entry |
| Posted by: RetroXYZ Oct 2 2009, 08:59 PM |
| Oh, there's no way I'm finishing this. I can make a good song, but I am absolutely terrible at putting it into an audio studio program. :/ I need a MIDI keyboard. Sorry, dropping out, I guess, even though I never technically made anything. |
| Posted by: Kritter Oct 2 2009, 09:01 PM |
| I dropped out too incase anyone didn't notice, lack of time for myself, which is a shame because this was a great competition. |
| Posted by: Hohoo Oct 3 2009, 05:15 PM |
| Shouldn't we start voting already? |
| Posted by: Zephyra Oct 6 2009, 09:20 PM |
| Sorry bout the delay top 5 begins tomorrow I'll assemble the entries when it's time |
