FINAL VOTING TIME WAS MOVED HERE I'LL STOP EDITING THIS NOW
FINAL VOTING TIME!
TOP FIVE VOTING TIME!Click for details. The original post is below. Congratulations to WiWa on getting Second Place, MechaBowser for getting third, and Homeroe, Alex and Mewizkuit for runners-up in the top 5 6! edit: Rules have been expanded upon somewhat, hopefully they give a better idea on the rules. I kinda labeled it as no walking/running, but the focus is more around the control style or playstyle, rather than the actual concept of walking or running. This time, the competition's theme is not about character or graphic restrictions or focus(not saying a lot of previous ones were or not). Special Thanks to Peardian for the inspiration for this idea! The rules of this competition are to make a minigame that requires you to use a form of movement other than traditional walking/running. You can use other forms of movement, such as hopping, grappling hooks, even flying/swimming are allowed, though they must control differently than standard platformer walking. So, you can't just strap a jet sprite on Mario's back and have it push him forward as he walks, but you can slap wings or flippers on him and have the player tap for each flap, have a stone statue that hops in a similar way, or go all Bionic Commando with him with a grappling hook... minus the ability to walk left and right normally, of course. You also can't cheat and, say, make a Tetris Attack game, saying "the cursor isn't walking!". Do note that this is all for gameplay, walking that happens in cutscenes or the like doesn't count, though it might be awkward to see the player character restricted to jumping around, only to get up and walk to the next level and then go back to jumping. To make things short: -The game must feature a form of movement other than standard platformer walking/running/sprinting/etc. The movement must be something other than simply holding a button down to move continuously. - NEW(ish) RULE: Other things like jumping and ducking are allowed of course, though some standard things, like climbing, might go too close into the standard hold left/right walking style, so try not to add that unless it's different. No automatic moving like Yoshi's Touch 'n Go or the Mario's Time Machine surf bits, either, unless it's, say, a conveyor belt, wind or other temporary obstacle moving the player.-It must feature some form of platform style gameplay, no Tetris style puzzle games or whatnot. -NEW RULE: Walking/running CAN be allowed only if it's done in a non-standard style, say, pressing a button per footstep, or pressing a button to do skips, which falls under the hopping idea.-NEW(ish) RULE: While I mostly listed examples that involve simply tapping the button to hop or fly or for each step, that doesn't mean you can't use other forms of non-hold right to win movement. For example, slingshotting a character is a possible gameplay style if you want to think outside of the box.-Only gameplay is restricted by the rules, cutscenes are free to have as much traditional style walking/running as they want. I don't make competitions much, does a month sound good? That would make the competition end on... July 18th, 2009, at midnight(GMT)!Good luck with your entries, everyone! MARIO'S SURF-ARI IS TAKEN! |
Unless you have some cool twist to the standard surfing minigame style, automatic moving(like on a wave) isn't allowed.. I hope I'm not being too strict with this!
Moonwalking is also not allowed, unless, say, you had to press a button for each footstep, that's far enough away from standard movement... To be honest, now that I think about it, walking or running in non-standard ways is kinda okay, again as long as it's not the standard holding a direction to move style, but then it'd usually probably go into skipping territory, which goes away from the walking rule in the first place.

I wish you hadn't changed the rules I already did so much work on my game Aerial Mario DemoControls: Z: Punch X: Spin C: Meteor S: Flame-On! (use-able when the green bar is full) is this still valid or do I have to completely redo the game? This post has been edited by Mewizkuit on Jun 18 2009, 10:33 PM
