Well, I went into the movie not knowing what to expect. New director, new cast members, new direction for the film. Need I remind you what happens when too many characters are introduced? It's called Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Anyway, all the acting was pretty damned good. Not even Halle Berry annoyed me. Angel, Kitty, Juggernaut, and Colossus were all a bit underused, but it didn't feel like their characters were sacrificed or cut at all. Their stories were complete, but the characters were a bit underused. As a HUGE plus, all the doubts I had about CGI and suits were for nothing. angel and Beast looked great and even Juggernaut was pretty good.

MAJOR SPOILERS ahead. you've been warned.

The best scene in the movie by far was when Magneto and Professor X go to Jean's house to confront her after she escapes the school. As the tension rises in the house, objects begin to float, water rises upward, and things around the house go absolutely nuts before- in a very stunning and unexpected move, Phoenix kills Professor X. The whole mood for the scene is amazing.

However, the funniest scene in the movie is when Kitty traps Juggernaut in the floor, to which he replies (and yes I'm very serious.) "Do you know who I am?! I'm the Juggernaut, *****!" Just like the infamous internet redub.
I cracked up.

SPOILERS NOT OVER. KEEP MOVIN'

I hope none of you are too big of fans of Cyclops either. Although it is never shown, Phoenix apparently kills him early in the film. He's soon joined by Professor X, and ultimately, Jean, herself. Likewise, the "cure" takes its toll on Mystique, Rogue, and even Magneto.

SUPER DUPER SPOILERS OVER

The ending definitely leaves room for another movie. Just a little movement, then it cuts to credits. You'll see what I mean.
And as Joker said, definitely stay after the credits. You'll be shocked.

This is definitely my favorite flick of the year so far.

I work at a theater and screened it tonight. Here's what happens after the credits;

After Magneto makes the chess king flinch, the credits roll. From there, we see Juggernaut (who knocked himself out) in a hospital bed. As the nurse comes in, the body speaks to her, but in the voice of Xavier.

And it's not from out-of-nowhere. While talking to his class early in the movie he addresses that this scenario is possible.

So there ya go.

Spoilers:
To be honest it seems to me the killing of Xavier and Cyclops is just for shock value and nothing else. These characters are tossed aside in the attempt to make Phoenix menacing and have you worry about the other characters. I'm sure it works... But at what cost? Want my opinion? I think Cyclops should've stayed alive and took the centre-stage in trying to stop Jean, like he kinda did in the comic (He was certainly a main player in that story, since he's Jean's lover after all). **** Wolverine. He's had all of X-Men 1 and 2 to strut his stuff AND he's getting his own spin-off (A waste of film if you ask me. What the hell else is there to tell about him?). Let someone else get in the spotlight, for the love of God!

And the manner in which Xavier is killed is very insulting to the character, I find. He doesn't just get killed. He ****ing explodes. I don't know how he explodes, but it's still goddamn overkill of a massive degree. Someone such as Xavier deserved a much more dignified send-off and with much more reason behind it than to just be fodder to the main villain. If he has to die in general by her hands, at least leave a body behind >.>

Now, I'm not saying this movie shall be a terrible film. I'm not saying I won't enjoy it... I'm sure that when I watch it (I'll give it a rent...) I'll find the action enjoyable on a whole. However, from what I've heard an read, I'm guessing I'll have an enormous sense that it could have been so much more once it's over... People saying "It's no X-2, but still good!" is not a very good compliment, in my opinion.

JESUS CRAP I didn't watch after the credits... DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN

Oh well, I loved it. Room for another sequel is there, but I don't know how they'll manage without those certain characters. But if there is a sequel, there'd better be Apocalypse, and he must not be crap.

I think the "phoenix" has the power to manipulate matter with her mind. And that's just what happens to Professor X.

And I don't care what she can do, story-wise that's no way to treat a long-running character in the comics OR the movie.

Well face it, movies are never as good as the games/comics/cartoons anyway so they may as well butcher it.

While X-Men hasn't been a big deal in my life, I do know quite a bit about it, but I'm not a fan. While I haven't seen ethier of the first two quite all the way through, I have seen most of the second. This however, was a disappointment even from someone who doesn't know a whole lot about the series.
First off I guess the movie tries to hold it's basis on the title of last stand. So many characters are killed off and usually for no reason at all. Or even a scene with it. See: Cyclops. Nothing. What was Brett Ratner thinking? I know for a fact Cyclops is a main character and he dies in the first 30 mins. Next to go is Doc. X himself. At least this scene was done right. In fact, I agree with Ton. This whole scene is the best in the movie. But that was halfway through the movie and I would've liked to see him stick around more. Jean Grey, Famke Janssen (Yes from Goldeneye) does a so-so job. Her acting as great as usual. However she only says 10 - 15 lines in the whole movie. :< Anyone but Wolverine, Storm and Magneto get hardly any time on screen. The best newcomer is certainly Beast. Kelsey Grammer is unrecognizable. And don't get me started on Mystique. Hot damn. Cameron Bright must be a albino or something because he plays THE EXACT, no joke, EXACT same role as in Ultraviolet.
The special effects were awesome. Especially the Golden Gate Bridge. The story is pretty good overall but is much better in some places then others. It feels the move does not provide enough closure at the end. I mean it is the final stand. But apparently not if you watch the end. Especially with the Magneto movie, yes Magneto movie in 2007. Quickly fallowed by Wolverine movie also in 2007.

Overall it was a bit of a let down compared to what I saw in the other films. But still a good movie.

7/10

While I haven't seen ethier of the first two quite all the way through, I have seen  most of the second. So many characters are killed off and usually for no reason at all. Or even a scene with it. See: Cyclops. Nothing. What was Brett Ratner thinking? I know for a fact Cyclops is a main character and he dies in the first 30 mins.

There's a scene where Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey are kissing, and his face starts deteriorating. That's pretty much a death scene considering the musical cues invoked afterwards and the reaction of the Professor. Add this to the blatant references that he died, his glasses floating around, and the fact that Professor Xavier dies in pretty much the same fashion (with his skin fluctuating), and it's pretty naive of you to say he didn't have a death scene. It's not like this is the first movie to not have a death happen completely on screen, you don't need to see his brains explode and a grave stone appear to know he's dead (although he gets a grave with his name on it at the end anyways). I guess Ratner was thinking that his audience might be able to grasp that concept, but apparently we still have some rather dense movie goers.

QUOTE

I'm having a hard time seeing how "so-so" and "great" go hand in hand. Make up your mind!

QUOTE
Kelsey Grammer is unrecognizable.

Well, he seems to utter one of his famous Dr. Frasier Crane chuckles when he first meets everyone at the X-Mansion. But if you were talking merely about his make-up, then I agree that it was done very well.

QUOTE
The story is pretty good overall but is much better in some places then others.

This seems to be the common critique against this movie, and most reviewers attack the story just as vaguely as you do. If you really have a strong opinion about the story in comparison to the past two movies, I'd sincerely like to hear it, because I just don't see how this movie is lacking in story in the face of X1 and X2. I will concede that X3 was severely lacking in dialogue, and there were definitely not as many witty or quotable lines. But when someone is drooling over Mystique, someone who received plenty of screen time in the first two movies, I'm not sure they're fit to review the third entry in the series.

If I had to use a ten point scale, I would probably give it a 7 out of 10 just as you did. I just felt that some of your criticisms could use a little more support if you're actually trying to write substantial movie reviews. Plus it doesn't hurt to be a lot more familiar with the source material if you're going to involve it in your review at all. In my opinion, you either review a movie with adequate knowledge of the movie's background or without incorporating that information at all (also known as a "how does it stand on its own" review). You took an awkward middle ground with your review, and that's probably why it didn't sit well with me.
