Alright, first you open ITunes. Then you get the songs you want onto your computer, then in ITunes, go to the File Tab, and click add to Playlist. Find the song you want, and add it to your playlist. Look for the song on your playlist, and if you have your iPod connected, drag it to where there should be a little iPod icon with it's name next to it.

It isn't showing my iPod anywhere when I plug it in.

Ipod's usually come with discs. In order to get the Ipod to show up in your Itunes window, you must install the software allowing the Ipod to be shown.
