Paper Bowser World is a side-scroller that is based off of those awesome mini stages from Paper Mario 2. In order to try to make the game a little more challenging, Bowser is a little weaker in my game. He only has two sizes, and he can't groundpound. I didn't want the game to be too easy! Also, I've set it up so you can play as Kammy Koopa! Her game is a lot more like classic Mario, since she is so much smaller than Bowser. The game features more than 16 unique levels, as well as variations of those levels for Kammy's game, making a total of 40 levels, overall!

Story:
Kammy has discovered that Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach are going on a two-week vacation. Outraged at the thought of going two weeks without being able to kidnap Peach, Bowser sets out to find and kidnap her before she leaves. Meanwhile, Kammy discovers a large black chest. She finds that a person is locked inside the chest. He promises to do something really cool for her if she let's him out...

Screenshots (Note: These screens are slightly outdated. The game look a little different.):

Pretty. Very Paper Mario-ish, though you should be able to go even bigger. Now you make Kammy playable in the demo. I want to shoot playstation blasts at random goombas.

F4, Duckboy.

Anyway this is pretty cool. He grows huge. But how I shot fire? D:

Also those sprites are very ugly resized, try anti-aliasing. And make shift jump. Other than that this is bloody hilarious. Nice use of sounds and graphics. soveryhappy.gif

Fun! I don't know about the sound effects, though. The "hitting enemy/item block" sound is kinda annoying. ohmy.gif

I thought it was funny myself. I tried to get sounds that are similar to the ones used in the real thing. For the ones that I couldn't find, I just used sounds from other Mario games.

Oh, and to General Papulatus, I'm planning on retouching the smaller sprites. That way, they match the large versions in terms of line thickness, and they won't be so ugly.

And, Duckboy, perhaps I'll add a feature to the title screen (when I add one) that allows you to choose if you want fullscreen or windowed.

Once I complete Kammy's engine, I'll make a new demo.

As everybody's said, it's an awesome demo.

As for challenge, couldn't you just make the game harder rather than make Bowser weaker?

The collision detection feels a little funky with Bowser's enormous head always in the foreground, but it's fun anyway. Nice use of sound effects-- too many people overlook those when they make a game.

That makes the game harder. I wanted to design the engine similar to the real thing. In the real thing, Bowser can smash everything in his path. Now he can't, and that makes it just a smidge bit more difficult. Bowser's game will still be a piece of cake, though. Kammy's game is going to be a bit harder.

Alse, to Explosive Shroom, I am aware that Bowser's big `ol head can get in the way. He's a much larger character than I like to work with. I tried to make Bowser's mask small enough so that he would feel natural, but still be able to fit into smaller areas. I didn't want the levels to be so wide open that there was nothing in it. I could make it a little larger, though...

So no one is going to comment that the title looks a bit like "Paper Mario World?" ^^;

At least I didn't call it "Super Paper Bowser." I thought this name sounded nice. That, and the I've heard the Bowser mini stages from PM2 called "Bowser World" so I thought the name was appropriate.

To ParaChomp: For now, at least, I'm going to hold on to my engine. It's not finished anyway. Besides, it's really not that different from the platforming example on the Game Maker website.

New Demo! Again, see the first post. Kammy is now playable! Controls and such are the same. Arrows move. Up Arrow jumps. Space attacks. Press enter to resart the level. (I've also improved Bowser's game a little, so be sure to check it out, too!)
