Games are becoming shorter now, post comments here

Yeah I'm notecing(sp) a trend in new games now, one that is very common now.
GAMES ARE GETTING SHORTER.
Not all of them, just a large quantity of them. Observe.

EXAMPLE:
Metal Arms vs. Ratchet and Clank 3.

METAL ARMS (2003) has:
-42 levels
-meh-ish grafics
-multiplayer
-replay value
TOTAL COMPLETION TIME: 8 days (not counting the collection of secret chips)

R & C (2005)has:
-like 18 planets with multiple missions.
-Exelent grafics
-multiplayer
-replay value
TOTAL COMPLETION TIME: 3 days :/ (not counting the collection of titanium bolts)

So does anyone else notice this trend? DISCUSS

Focus on the damn gameplay not on the graphics for gods sakes.

I don't have a problem with short games. If I pay £30 for an 8 hour game, and each one of those 8 hours entertain me, I'm happy. I will play a good game more than once. Like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Half-Life 2, Ico, God of War...

I do have a problem with artificially extending the longevity of games, with excessive repetition, donkeywork and needless waiting. See Windwaker for more details.

This is why certain games can be modded

Since all the games you people are saying are "short" are not the first in a series, therefore they loved the first game SO much, that they'll play the sequel OVER and OVER nonstop, so you'll think you are playing for less time.

We need games that will keep you going for 10-20 hours and loads and loads of unlockables, like Metroid Prime

of course game designers are intentionally ignoring gameplay so they can add more particle effects!

Honestly I can't stand it when people say "WAH WAH THIS GAME IS 2 SHORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" You play games to have fun, not just to beat them, people. You CAN play games after beating them, you know! For example, I beat NSMB with all star coins and secret exits, but I still play it anyway BECAUSE IT IS FUN. And yes I am playing on my completed file.

I don't really think they've gotten much shorter, but there is less replay value in a lot of new games than older games. I mean for example, the old Sonic titles had a big replay value because of the debug cheats and collecting emeralds for Super Sonic. Nowadays the emerald collecting is either too hard and frustrating, not possible, or not worthwile, and even the emblems in the 3D titles don't really do much.

Of course, saying that, you need to remember that it takes longer to program a 3D game than a 2D one.

...sheesh it's all about EXTRAS EXTRAS EXTRAS with you all. Isn't there anyone left who plays games just for the fun of it, and not only for completion? ;.;

People Focus to much on Graphics and Extras rather than anything else.
The only thing a Good game needs is
-Gameplay
-Music
-Optional Replay vaule and Difficulty.

YES. Although a game doesn't NEED good music, I say it definitely makes the experience more enjoyable. Some levels I do replay just for the music.

I think the core singleplayer should be long, but not to the point where it gets stretched thin. Uru, for example, took me a week to beat, and that game was incredibly fresh all the way through. Hell, even Doom 3 took me about 20 hours the first time through.
If there's extras, they have to be as fun as the main game (see: Jet Set Radio Future). Things like Wario World are unexcuseable though. PK beat that game in a single seating.

So yeah, games should be longer, but they should only be made longer if there's more substance to back them up.

Extras are replay value... I'd play a game again if it had a multiplayer option, and have fun while I'm at it (As long as the game is actually good though).

...You mean the core game itself ISN'T replay value?
