What would you like to see most in the, next 2D Mario platformer?

I'd say pullable plants like in SMB2U, Shyguys, more powerups, and a level editor. And NWFC support. If there was NWFC and a level editor, you could share levels online

New things? A lot of the gimmicks from NSMB were lifted from Yoshi's Island.

Maybe live-action MLSS-type gameplay, having the bros work together, would be cool.

New things.

Secrets, with findability ranging from hard to near-impossible. Half the game should be secret.

Punching.

Needs more Metroidvania Mario games.

Level editor

I would love to see Mario be able to ride Yoshi. That, and SM64's long jump ability. Also, Bowser Jr. should have a much MUCH smaller role.

This is such a good idea I must quote it twice. And expand on my endorsement of it.

Here's what I want in a freeroaming 2D Mario platformer.
-A sensible amount of awesome writing, the quality of Paper Mario with its humour and lovelyness
-2D pixelcrafted graphics. A few shiny special effects here and there are fine
-Wide huge massive area to explore
-A sensible warp pipe system to allow one to avoid excessive plodding long distances
-Wide range of moves that starts big and keeps getting bigger
-Punching and kicking please
-Fireflower, cape, and so on, when acquired, become permanent items in your inventory
-Some super-powerful enemy that trudges around the gameworld where ever it likes, and will destroy you on sight so you have to hide (SA-X ripoff pls)
-Lighthearted atmosphere, full of humour and parodies of other games (especially Castlevania and Metroid, for obvious reasons)

More Kuribo's Shoe and Frog Suit.

With multiple selectable characters with their own playing styles. Mario and Luigi are a given...maybe add in Peach and Daisy? Possibly Wario and Waluigi?

-a really hard Bowser battle at the end

Originality. That's why Yoshi's Island is probably my most favorite game.

-I think it should be more like Doki Doki Panic/SMB2, set in subcon
-4 selectable characters, Mario and Luigi are given, but then maybe switch it up to Wario and Yoshi or Toad and Yoshi

-all new level designs with the subcon feel
-new or old bosses, I don't care which
-maybe a new species of Birdo
