Yeah. The Super Nintendo relied almost solely on coprocessors due to the fact that Nintendo had not yet implemented disc technology into their games.
Without these coprocessors you wouldn't see games like Yoshi's Island, Kirby Superstar, Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country, etc.
The same goes with the Nintendo 64. It also relied on accessories, which were seemingly useless, but did improve gameplay elements and the graphical appeal of the game. The Expansion Pack for example, created "particle effects", which were randomly generated particles, or images within the game, that would be used in things like the explosions in Rouge Squadron, and the rain in Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong 64. These effects were not revisited until the Playstation 2. Let's also not forget the Nintendo 64 Dynamic Drive as well, which supposedly could support magnetic discs similar to that of a mini-harddrive which could contain a slightly bigger amount of memory than Playstation discs.
So I think it's pretty sententious to discredit an entire company simply because they are considering focusing on graphics next generation. It's Nintendo, you aren't going to see good gameplay go anywhere soon even if graphics are taken more firmly into consideration.
