Ok, we all know the universal remote gag, and we've all pressed the "mute" button while pointing the remote at family members, and we know that this idea isn't original, but it does make for a surprisingly good movie.

As most movies about family start out, Adam Sander's character, Michael Newman, spends too much time at work (with boss, Ammer, played by David Hasselhoff) and not enough time at home. When he is at home, his life is complicated. One night, he goes to Bed, Bath, and Beyond (the only store open) and wants to see if they have a remote he can use to make his life easier at home. Christopher Walken's character Morty gives him the universal remote.

You can see where it goes from here, as the trailer shows you. What it leaves out, is that the remote adapts to what he has skipped and continues to act on its own. Eventually, the goofy Adam Sandler movie we came to see becomes much more drama-oriented. Two scenes in particular arequite heart-wrenching and the second had me tearing up.

The supporting cast is great. I'm not gonna look up names, but the kids who play his... well, kids do a great job. Chris Walken is hilarious as Morty, who becomes an important and interesting, if not confusing character. Mike Newman's parents are played by The Fonz himself, Henry Winkler, and Julie Kavner. Sean Astin is good in his role, but the one who absolutely steals the movie is Kate Bekinsale. Especially as Pocahontas. Wow.

Overall, I went into this movie not expecting much. Maybe some cheap gags and a cliche realization the character has about his life. I got that and much more.

The first thing I can say from getting back from it is wow. I don't think I've ever laughed and then got so choked up at a movie ever. This is easily my favorite movie so far this year.
The movie starts out as a hilarious Adam Sandler movie. He's a workaholic who just needs more time in his life. His encounters with Kevin O'Doyle are hilarious. (As quoted below) He meets Morty (Walken) who really gets scary at the end of the movie. Anyway, he gives him a remote that controls everything, including time and space. He eventually finds that this remote starts to over-ride his choices and that Morty tricked him out of his life. The movie is very explicit sexuality wise and I'm surprised this passed a PG-13 rating. Probably not what you want to take your family too, unless you're some super easy going family that doesn't get tight around sex jokes. As I said before the movie gets really serious and sad at the end, it had me choking up. Kate Beckinsale is wonderful in this. Has anyone noticed she looks like Evangeline Lilly? Anyway Sean Astin is also great in this as he was in Sandler's 2003 movie 50 First Dates. This movie also has a great example of a fart joke that IS funny. Great movie, go see it.

9/10

QUOTE
Kevin O'Doyle: My dad's car stereo is a Bose
Michael Newman: Your dad's stereo blows?
Kevin O'Doyle: Wait, that's not what I said!
Michael Newman: AHH YOUR DAD'S STEREO BLOWS! WEEEE!

I've seen only the commercial so far and already my favorite part is when he freezes time to lower that kid's arm and then the baseball hits the kid in the face.

Grade-A revenge, right there!

I saw it tonight and was really surprised that it was, in fact, a great movie. I saw the previews and thought it was just going to be decent but I was pleasantly surprised when I found out I was wrong.

I was shocked with the near ending parts. It really tugged my heart strings, my eyes were almost watering. It's easily the best movie I've seen this year.

Critics hate everything these days except overly "dramatic" comicbook adaptations with a huge budget put into special effects.

Not really. There are some "dumb" movies that the critics love.
