Yes but things like this are needed to come to a agreement. You have to see each other's sides.

And it's clear nobody has done that. This has been going for two or more pages now, and nobody has settled anything. If we go another few pages, we'll still be argueing.

QUOTE (Mario Gamer @ Jul 14 2006, 03:46 AM)
What would you go by then?

Go by a group of rules that the community would decide, rather than persue in pointless scuffles with the community. But we seem to have ultimately reached a stalemate: the community disgarees on the validity of a submission, which means that it is the administration's responsibility to make the decision. This is evident with the whole "pixel art/sprite" pallapallooza too. Why do you think people still argue about that? Because a rule hasn't been set in stone by the administration.

Time limit: 2 weeks, perhaps longer depending on demand/number of entries
Top 5 voting: 2-3 days (any more than this is downright ridiculous)
Final voting: 1-2 days (any more than this is downright ridiculous)
Creators: 1-2

Okay this is what I think we need in terms of rules. I don't think any more are necessary.

Ah but a drawing/spriting (dunno which one anymore) compo includes Pixel Art. But that's not in the name. Hmmm

That's because it still hasn't been firmly established whether pixel art = sprite and I got sick of the arguing so I just don't care anymore and they can enter whatever they want :P

Let me rephrase,

What would be the rule that would determine what a mini-game would be.

Really, that's all I want to know.

I think the administration allowing the community to set a fair amount of rules for a competition looks great on paper---but there are times where we don't know what the hell we're arguing about.

It's clear we need "nazi admins" since people aren't mature enough to come to an agreement.

And to elaborate on my last post... allowing people to enter full games into minigame competitions. But make it well known that it's frowned upon to do so.

Kind of like the PPP guidelines.

I try to let the community decide things as much as possible because I've always seen this place as a democracy, but yeah, there are cases like this where the community can't reach an agreement and we might just have to come up with rules ourselves.

Hell we can't even agree on what the next isometric comp should be :P

What would be the rule that would determine what a mini-game would be.

I really think it's common sense, but my definition of a mini game is a short, simple game with a simple goal. There's usually pretty much only one goal, and it's set in stone - whack all the moles, pop all the balloons, find the hidden item, catch all the Goombas...stuff like that.

A full game would have many different goals spread out over several levels. Minigames are usually just one level and the difficulty is the only thing that changes, such as the moles starting to appear faster in a whack-a-mole game as time progresses.

I don't think we should have to firmly establish what a mini-game is because defining something like that is pretty hard. It's just something you naturally come to recognize as you play more games. And I don't think we really need to define it when I haven't seen anyone here who honestly doesn't know what a minigame is.

I think it should be up to the winner to decide. I mean clearly there are limits but they should get the freedom to extend it if needed also.

No less then 2 weeks. No more then 2 months.

1 Day top five
1 Day final vote
Like the other compos.

I'm sorry but even a month is a ridiculous suggestion.

PS: What do we think of my suggested compromise?

Pretty much agree with this. You don't want an overly long time period since it just makes the comp stagnate and people forget. Make it short enough so that they have to get the ball rolling, but still giving them plenty of time to make a decent game.

Yes but what about something along the lines of get from point A to point B within the time limit. But have the levels change and the time limit shrink? I think most people would say it's not a mini-game. But others would say it is since it's a simple concept.

:<

Or even Delmore's scrapped fighting game, I would consider that a full game since it has lots of options with caracters and such. But I would still think it belongs in the compo.

That's a little bit harder to judge, but I guess if the levels and time limit were really short it could be considered a minigame.

Keyword is "mini".
