Top 5 gets 24 hours just like every other compo. Final voting gets 24 too.

QUOTE (ShadowMan @ Jul 13 2006, 12:32 PM)
Again, I'm completely disagreeing like everyone else. By not allowing already-made engines, you're hugely restricting the contest. That counts out almost every single novice imagineable, and if you want more people to enter minigame competitions, you want to make it as accessable as possible.

And from what I've seen, minigame comps are based on WHAT you do, not HOW you do it

Yes.

Anyway, I think a good limit for the competitions is 2 weeks. Maybe even a month depending on the theme of the comp. 2 months is just... well, ridiculous.

Again, may I emphasize that giving a large time limit and then restricting the download -- not the code, mind you, the entire game -- to two megabytes is a bit... ick.

I'm not really getting the point of the size limit either.

I think the time depends on the topic. You need about 5 entries. So if needed, they should be extended too.

Especially since MMF/TGF don't have much in the way of stand-alone compression

MMF2/TGF2 have much better in that regard, I think

Because apparently 56k users are willing to download every fangame in a competition and compare them but not if any of them are over two megabytes

a 2MB game would only take like 5 minutes or so to download anyway

I thought this was going to adress how people were saying any game was allowed to be entered even though it's specifically named the Minigame Competition. I guess I was wrong.

Except then nobody wants to enter anymore since they won't be assed to produce a full game in that much time.

Except it's no longer a novelty when you're slaving your ass away to get a Super Mario Epic 2 quality game done in a week time period - unless you play on allowing multiple extensions if not everybody comes up with something within the designated time period.

Cross-posted from the 14th MGC topic:

QUOTE
It is a requirement when entering a minigame competition to enter something that is far less expansive than a normal game. From my understanding, it is unacceptable to enter a game that's complete, like what you seem to be saying. It's not the fact that you 'can' or 'can't' do it, it's the fact that it's extremely disruptive and confusing to other people. If one person creates a fully expansive game, not only do people need to play through all of it in order to pass judgement, but it creates friction in the balance of the minigame competition. One entry is "Super Mario's Fishing" and another is a full blown epic real-time RPG allowing you to create your own character class, etc. It's that the two are incomparable.

Also, I would like to point out that your "sports" analogy, in actuality, is the same thing I'm talking about; if somebody is able to jump consecutively higher than all other athletes, they are disqualified from the tournament they would be entering.

Roger Bannister wasn't allowed to run in the special olympics, for example.

Look at how many we got this time. We had four entries, and that was it. If we made it so any game size would be allowed, that number would go down even more. The whole thing will be over in a month if we changed it like that.

Oh, so you're saying all the people who are as white as Jim Crow, who never get outside, who like to exclusively visit a fangaming forum and fiddle around with game making utilities should get a handicap, just because they have the balls and time on their hands to finish a 24MB game in two weeks?

If that's the case, then we should consider the past an irrelevence. We're about to write the book of rules, and as such, I expect many entries in the past to hold discrepencies.
