Mario had an appearance in a snowboarding game(as well as a basketball game, which he ironically has his own Marioy style version of now), and there was one in one of the Mario Parties, though this would be more race oriented.
Sonic Riders plays like a somewhat more complex version of Kirby Air Ride for those not in the know, you move forward automatically unless you hold the breaks, when you try and skid you leave "turbulance" trails, basically half pipes of wind. Your machine, an EX-Gear, runs on "air", which is gotten by item boxes or doing tricks off of ramps and halfpipes and such. Each level usually has an area where the game takes the character through some form of event, like a ride down a waterfall, in which rotating the control stick speeds you up and recovers air. You can press a button to boost forward, using up air but gaining some more speed for a bit. If you run into a foe while doing so you'll lock on to them so to say and use an attack, the strength/type varying depending on your rings. Some of these can really screw up the opponent putting them dead last sometimes.

As much as I like Air Ride, had Air Ride been built later and was inspired by Sonic Riders instead of possibly the other way around, Air Ride would kick more ass than it does now.
Especially because I like Air Ride's colors and soundtrack.
