Yeah, I'm sure some of you have heard about it, but some people have recieved this invitation for a mysterious press event on September 14th. Coincidently, a similar event will be held around the same timeframe in both Europe and Japan.

Well, Nintendo did say that we would be getting the launch date before the end of September. This could be it.

QUOTE
Nintendo has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that new details regarding its Wii console will be revealed on September 15th in Europe - with a price and launch date announcement looking highly likely.

Speaking on the subject of the trade-only event, an NoE representative said: "Wii will be playable. Nintendo will be announcing new software at the event and there will be new announcements regarding the Wii console itself."

Nintendo is holding a similar event in North America on September 14th, where it’s expected that NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime will reveal price and launch details for the territory.

The representative went on to quash rumours that have recently emerged on the net regarding possible production delays, apparently due to difficulties with manufacturing the Wii's remote controller.

"The reports are entirely rumour and speculation. I can confirm that the Wii is very much on course for a Q4 release, as Nintendo originally stated," the spokesperson said.

I aslo thought I should address this here since I have no better place:

The one thing I object to in Nintendo's strategy is their evident reluctance to showcase the Wii to more than simply the press. Sure, there have been third parties like THQ showcasing their Wii games, but Nintendo hasn't really made a playable boom with their system like they have in the past (to consumers).

Nintendo already slipped up with a Wii absence at PAX, and they seem to be continuing their strategy of only letting the press try the system out with this invitation only event. While I'm sure interactive kiosks will be up and running by the end of October, it certainly doesn't help getting the word out to your possible costumers with a much more open ended attendence wise event.

As far as that goes, I am of the impression that PAX is really just one big nerdgasm. Nintendo's absence really makes sense in that regard, since the "hardcore" base is already in anticipation for the system and will try it as soon as it becomes available to them.

I'd like to think that the general public is not actively seeking the Wii out, but I'm sure Nintendo's theorizing that it will grab them as soon as the kiosks hit big box stores.

It's always been Nintendo's flaw to not go all-out when it comes to advertising and marketing, though Reggie has been doing an OK job on the marketing side. They're not a very aggressive company when it comes to marketing and showcasing their system, especially since their newer systems are something completely new.
