Whatever the reason, there were a crapload of people waiting in line to get it, as seen in these Famitsu reports.

Lucky for us in North America, we're getting the Onyx (black) DS Lite on September 13, as well as the Coral Pink shade. It's not too much longer to wait for those that want to get one of those two colors, but at least we know we don't need to wait in lines hundreds deep to get one on the first day.

"I don't think anyone understands how much the DS Lite is dominating Japan. Even looking at people lineup for the fifth different color to come out for the system in Lite's six month history can't do it justice. Nintendo has solved the riddle of the declining Japanese games market in a big way."

Not quite what I expected for just a new color, but damn. I still have by good 'ol clunky DS regular. Maybe by the time I'm looking for a new one, they'll launch a cobalt.
