Point is, there's no point gagging over playing games you can easily play on PC, on the Wii because it's just going to be the same thing.

Uh.. Well I just think its stupid creaming over games we've played 1000's of times in the past just cause it's on a new console.

The only reason to do crap like this would be for DS, because then you could play stuff anywhere.

I wonder why everyone is so cooped up about playing old games when they can play them on PC for free anyway

Maybe some of us would prefer to get old games legally.

They keep touting DS to Wii connectivity, so I think it's a given that the smaller games will download to the DS much like the NES games downloaded to GBA for Animal Crossing.

I love playing Golden Axe. I play through the game anywhere from 5 to 20 times per year. I hope these games support 2P over WiFi, but I don't think the current "Way of the WiFi" will allow for this with seperate friend codes for each game, and all.

That is definitely not the "Way of the WiFi" that you've described (although I'd argue the usage of such a flaky term anyways).

It has been confirmed that there will not be friend codes for each and every game. That happened on the DS because it didn't start with online capabilities, so it had to generate and store friend codes on each individual game card. For the Wii, you get one friend code per console, and the friend codes will be saved on the system itself.

Regardless of all that, I think it's pretty clear that the accessibility and sheer volume and the games to be available makes the Wii virtual console exciting. It's not simply a way to play games you stole over the past years, and I believe that's the sort of thing Nintendo -is- hoping to cash in on. These are the most complete, accurate, and affordable ports of these games that will ever exist for a long long time. And how cool will it be to have versions of games like that that are normally so difficult to obtain?

Not everyone is like my family, not everyone has this enormous backlog of games sitting around to play. In fact I'm willing to bet 99% of the game buying public doesn't, and even those that do are sometimes willing to buy a game again for the convenience of having a better version of an awesome title (Chrono Trigger), or getting something they were never really in a position to try.

I find it really really hard to believe anyone with a brain would scoff at the Virtual Console. So far I know of maybe a handful of people that don't care about it, and their arguments have all been the same:

- Why would you want to play -old- games? Snork?

And of course

- I already downloaded the ROMs!

Both make you sound like an idiot, especially since you can be banned here for participating in that sort of activity.

Dammit why haven't Sega added Master System and Sega Saturn games to the virtual console? I'm sick and tired of Sonic 1 ports already

I am willing to bet that this has something to do with internal Wii hardware and the possibility of Wii not simply running emulators for these games. But rather having some new, alternate processors designed to run the SNES, TG16, NES, Genesis, N64 games...

EDIT: Here let me clarify.

Nintendo has kept the Wii specs hidden from everyone. No 3rd party developer has been allowed to talk about the final technical specifications. At best they've been able to say only that the technology inside of Wii is the same as the GCN. That the actual "Broadway" and "Hollywood" chips are simply extensions of the Flipper chip and Gecko processor. They're just slightly faster, and sport a few new effects.

Why is this significant? Because the Wii isn't supposed to be a powerhouse system. Remember one of the most expensive functions of the Playstation 2 ? Its ability to play all the old Playstation games. The technology was completely different, and Sony put a lot of money into making the Playstation 2 able to run its own predecessors games.

Now look at the Wii, the chips are almost identical by all accounts (Nintendo, ATI, developers). Gamecube backwards compatibility is not a 'possible feature', it's undisputed fact for every GCN title. Combine this with what Nintendo is promising for the Virtual Console, and how they have said specifically in the past that they have not shown their whole hand as far as that is concerned.

Nintendo has lost millions every year due to piracy, they've specifically shut this site down before; they know what ROMs are, they know that it is prevalent in many circles that kids download tons of ROMs and may even own entire console collections. But no one that hasn't gone out of their way to get an SNES controller working on their PC, or to fake they have an SNES sound card has ever got the real experience.

I somewhat doubt (despite how many shells they're going to put out), that Nintendo is planning a controller shell for each console. But with the VC controller still, don't you think it will be a lot more intriguing to aging enthusiasts like myself to play a game that is not simply emulated? But running as it did... as it -should- ?

We could do the same with kids that are on drugs. You don't get issued the "Thief" title when you're arrested. If you stole something, you stole something. And you wouldn't have to go around justifying that theft unless you knew it was wrong to do so in the first place.
