| QUOTE (Cutman @ Sep 12 2006, 04:32 AM) | | I wonder why everyone is so cooped up about playing old games when they can play them on PC for free anyway |
Maybe some of us would prefer to get old games legally.

I am willing to bet that this has something to do with internal Wii hardware and the possibility of Wii not simply running emulators for these games. But rather having some new, alternate processors designed to run the SNES, TG16, NES, Genesis, N64 games...
EDIT: Here let me clarify.
Nintendo has kept the Wii specs hidden from everyone. No 3rd party developer has been allowed to talk about the final technical specifications. At best they've been able to say only that the technology inside of Wii is the same as the GCN. That the actual "Broadway" and "Hollywood" chips are simply extensions of the Flipper chip and Gecko processor. They're just slightly faster, and sport a few new effects.
Why is this significant? Because the Wii isn't supposed to be a powerhouse system. Remember one of the most expensive functions of the Playstation 2 ? Its ability to play all the old Playstation games. The technology was completely different, and Sony put a lot of money into making the Playstation 2 able to run its own predecessors games.
Now look at the Wii, the chips are almost identical by all accounts (Nintendo, ATI, developers). Gamecube backwards compatibility is not a 'possible feature', it's undisputed fact for every GCN title. Combine this with what Nintendo is promising for the Virtual Console, and how they have said specifically in the past that they have not shown their whole hand as far as that is concerned.
Nintendo has lost millions every year due to piracy, they've specifically shut this site down before; they know what ROMs are, they know that it is prevalent in many circles that kids download tons of ROMs and may even own entire console collections. But no one that hasn't gone out of their way to get an SNES controller working on their PC, or to fake they have an SNES sound card has ever got the real experience.
I somewhat doubt (despite how many shells they're going to put out), that Nintendo is planning a controller shell for each console. But with the VC controller still, don't you think it will be a lot more intriguing to aging enthusiasts like myself to play a game that is not simply emulated? But running as it did... as it -should- ?
