D.O.A.
A classic film noir piece about a man who has 24 hours to live after being poisoned. I'm a huge fan of the noir genre and this is one of the classics, with a lot of memorable lines and suspense. I highly recommend watching this if you have the time or buying it on one of those cheap public domain collections.

Superman: The Mechanical Monsters
One of the classic Fleischer Superman cartoon episodes. This particular one inspired some of Hayao Miyazaki's work, namely the robots in Laputa: Castle in the Sky and the opening sequence of the final episode in the second Lupin III series. Anyone watching this for the first time will be surprised at how great the animation is. It exudes a great pulp atmosphere and the visuals are the stuff of legend. You may have seen these on Cartoon Network in the 90s.

FreePlay Music
Great resource for public domain music in just about any flavor you could ask for. I used quite a bit of it in my Cowboy video. It's great for projects, but some of it is actually nice to listen to on it's own.

Add to the list!

That Freeplay site is AWESOME.

Not QUITE Public Domain, but close enough for use in videos and flashesin the same vein... Freesound! A whole bunch of foley work and sound effects licensed under creative commons.
Ljudo! Even MORE sounds to cut up and edit to your needs under CC.

Damn right! They don't make em like they used to... Well, except the plots are usually much better =P

The visuals also kind of inspired Bruce Timm and his team on Batman: The Animated Series and their future works, as well as inspiring Bryan Singer into the smaller "S" emblem seen in Superman Returns.

"The jewels! What have you done with the jewels?!"
"You'll read about it in tomorrow's paper!"

Classic XD

I love you in a non-homo way for FreePlay Music.

The animation looks good but I think it's becaused they used an assload of rotoscoping (tracing videos of live action stuff) which is why the robot looks 3d because they traced it off a real object, they must have used some sort of model

Yeah, you're right on the money. It does look brilliant as a result. Not to mention the huge budget of the shorts.
QUOTE
Paramount was interested in cashing in on the phenomenal popularity of the new Superman comic books by producing a series of theatrical cartoons based upon the character. The Fleischers hoped to discourage Paramount from committing to the series, so they informed the studio that the cost of producing such a series of cartoons would be about $100,000 per short -- an amazingly high figure, about four times the typical budget of a six-minute Fleischer Popeye the Sailor cartoon during the 1940s. To their surprise, Paramount agreed to the high cost, and the Fleischers were committed to the project.

From a discussion on the topic:

QUOTE
Straight rotoscoping was used for vehicles and some props. Roto reference was shot for a lot of the human characters too, but it was modified by the animators, just like in Disney films. It wasn't straight roto like Gulliver.

The cartoons seriously don't look like "an assload of rotoscoping". Look at the Lord of the Rings animated film if you want to see that.
