The main site question of a lifetime

Okay, so I'm not sure if this has ever been asked and addressed, but it's a little more complicated than your standard "can this be submitted to the main site" question. Simply put, can a game starring Donkey Kong (with maybe only minor references to Mario) be accepted onto the main site? I know all the bickering about the big furry ape breaking apart from the Mario series and how he's his own deal now, but I'm REALLLY curious if a Donkey Kong Country fangame would be applicable to go on MFGG. :x

I don't know where else this topic would go, so I posted it here.

I've always wanted to make a game where it's like Grand Theft Auto, but in Donkey Kong Country. I'd be much more motivated to make this if I could submit it on the MFGG main site.

Donkey Kong sprites must be a from a Mario game, as simple as that. We'll except, say Baby DK sprites and Donkey Kong from Mario Kart, but we won't accept Donkey Kong Country sprites. Mario cameos from Donkey Kong games (if any, I can only think of one) are acceptable, but only the Mario sprites.

A Donkey Kong fangame in the sense of the classic series MAY be acceptable if it still contains Mario as a central character (see the submission rules), but a DKC game would not.

What if it was a game that could be compared to the Donkey Kong Contry style but set in the Mushroom Kingdom with Mario characters?

Would the main site accept a Wario Land-style game (starring Wario, with little to no references to Mario)?

Or a Yoshi game?

The Wario and Yoshi games are still alright because they're set in the Mario universe. Something like "Donkey Kong Kills Mario" would probably be acceptable, though again, it has to place emphasis on the Mario aspects, not just "It's Donkey Kong is in the Mushroom Kingdom".

What if I theoretically designed a game that looked just like a Mario game, with the correct sprites and so forth, but it played a lot like Donkey Kong Country (as Kaepora suggested)? Then what if I theoretically made a mechanism that checked an online INI file for a flag called "SubmittedToMFGG" which would swap all Mario sprites with Donkey Kong and instances of Mario names with Donkey Kong Country names?

And what if this game was theoretically a trojan when ran on December 25th?

Then you've got way too much time on your hands.
