By the time of SA's release, Sonic could no longer keep up with his competitors. Crash isn't really much of a rival to Mario either, because he too quickly became less popular over time, and the license changing hands didn't help any. The height of his popularity was around Crash 2 and Warped, I think. Snakes had only what? 3 or 4 games on a Nintendo Consle and Sonic's had plenty including the Exclusive Advance series and Sonic Rush.

I never said Sonic shouldn't be in SSB. I was talking about the topic at hand, a "rival for Mario." I would assume that this meant game-wise. For the relationships fo the characters as Sega/Nintendo characters, that line has dissolved, seeing as Sega kinda got assimilated anyway.

In short, as the characters are appearing more exclusivelym on Nintendo platforms, it's very well possioble that we could see Sonic in a Smash someday, and I'd welcome ir. But so long as he's on other consoles as well...I doubt it.
