For some reason, I don't like fan games that are made to use shift & ctrl buttons for fire and jumping. Specifically the shift button for WinXP users. Everytime you press shift 5 times it turns on hotkeys, or stickykeys, which really is annoying. Some games do not even have an option to change controls.

So, is there any way around this bug, other than holding ctrl while playing a fan game? Besides using a gamepad, probably, as I still want to use keyboard to test out fan games.

Yea I know it's the default control scheme for most games made with click N Play, Multimedia Fusion, Game Maker, etc, but it is kind of an annoyance for updated PC's.

You can turn the hotkey off.

Well, you can deactivate the Sticky Keys shortcut. Press shift 5 times, then when the pop up that says that sticky keys was activated, go unter settings and uncheck the shortcut for sticky keys.

Different people have different preferences. That's why key select can be so crucial.

I like Shift and Ctrl as the buttons for run and jump. They are much better than Z and X because they are larger keys ans they are spaced further from the arrow keys.

Quick tip: In some Multimedia Fusion games, you can change the controls by pressing Ctrl+Y. Click on the X under keyboard for player 1.
My gamepad isn't really that good and is hard to play many games with (if I set it to be used, the right analog stick controls movement, pressing right immediately sets Mario cruising right forever and trying to play platformers with it is like playing SMW with X to run and Y to jump). It comes with a program that maps keys to the buttons, which is good, but it does not work with Shift and CTRL. sad.gif

Pfft. I would jsut set the buttons to my emulator button settings: Z=A Button. X=B. Start and select are right and left Shift.

I can tell you that the majority of gamers will prefer Shift and Control over anything else.
At least as long as you have TWO fire buttons.

And this topic mirrors that.

I can't play with using buttons that are above each other. I need 'em lined horizontally. But I also hate it when the keys are in the middle of the keyboard. Basically, every damn game here needs damn customizable keys. >:(

thats why I like games that dont use them, Im already confortable with the use of the mouse and keyboard and if I change the sicky key thingy the keyboard and mouse movemant or however you want to call it will change (at least for me) but then again you can turn it off if you dont mind the changes.

I use Shift and Z, because it turns out to be the easiest for me.
Having to reach my pinky down to hit control when I'm trying to jump and run at the same time is kind of a pain =(

EDIT: and like everyone else said, StickyKeys can be disabled. I also think that once you activate it, the pop-up will also give you the option to disable it.

Wanna know how I play games? With the little puppy in the attached picture.
You have gotta play GBA roms with one of these sometime.

Otherwise, I use Z, X, sometimes C too, Enter and Shift.

of course it only works if they used the player state conditions/events instead of hardcoding the keys directly
