For those of you not keeping up on the news, Universal recently dropped the Halo movie because the budget was becoming astoundingly huge. For now, Jackson and the other director of the movie who's name isn't that important have decided to put the movie on a "temporary hiatus" - seeing as how the film was slated for a 2008 release, it seems we won't be seeing it until years to come, which leaves one to wonder if the series wil be obsolete by the time this movie DOES come out:

QUOTE
October 31, 2006 - Halo producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with Microsoft, are putting the much-anticipated movie version of the hit video game franchise on ice. Following recent reports that development of the film would continue in spite of studio backers Fox and Universal dropping out, a press release being distributed by Jackson's WingNut Films today confirms that Halo is being indefinitely postponed.

Here's their statement regarding the film, sure to be greeted with howls of discontent by fans:
As was previously confirmed, we deeply regret that both Universal and Fox did not choose to move forward with financing the Halo film under the original terms of the agreement. At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with their partner, Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans throughout the world that we would settle for no less than bringing a first class film to the big screen. We are fully supportive of Director Neill Blomkamp's vision of the film. Neill is a tremendously gifted filmmaker and his preliminary work on Halo is truly awe-inspiring. While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait.

Well, the bright side is that the film won't be rushed into production and that could give it a better chance of not getting screwed up.

The Halo movie had been set for a 2008 release. Blomkamp was to direct from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) with rewrites by D.B. Weiss (Ender's Game) and Josh Olsen (A History of Violence). Now, it's no telling when the film will find its way to theaters, if at all.

IGN will have more Halo news as it breaks.

Microsoft stepping into the movie business would make me resent the entire company and cut myself.

The series obsolete? Halo 2 is still the most played Xbox Live title.

Maybe they're being cautious after King Kong. Jackson spent huge sums of money on that movie and if I remember correctly it didn't do too hot at the box office. DVD sales probably made up for that though.

Well I was more getting at the fact that if the film were to be released months before the third game, it would dramatically quell hype and Halo 3 could potentially garner much stronger sales figures.

They're probably going to over do the ads again for Halo 3 anyways. At least people have Halo 3 commercials to look forward to in theaters!

See that's different because it's the first title in a series. HAlo 2 was a sequal so people new about it from a previous game and it wasn't so much a chance if they'd like it or not. Now if Grabbed by thr Ghoulies 2 had commercials in theaters I'd put my money down that it would DOUBLE Halo 2's opening sales!

Hopefully people will realize by then that Grabbed By The Ghoulies was awful and that babies were killed in the making of that game

It's melted babies that made the forging of the discs possible.

I've never played it and the only praise I've heard for it is from Rare fans.

Well maybe I'm just sore because I bought it for $50
