What is it?

Elite Beat Agents is a rhythm game developed by iNiS (Gitaroo Man) for the Nintendo DS. It is a "spiritual successor" to the Japanese-only game Ossu! Tatake! Ouendan!, which sold very poorly in Japan but has been a popular import in the U.S. and Europe. The gameplay is identical to the earlier game and the graphical style similar, but the music, scenarios, and actual art are all new.

What's it sound like?

The following songs are known to be in EBA. Please note that most, if not all of the songs will be covers.

1. Walkie Talkie Man - Steriogram
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7Z564GUIK7s

2. ABC - Jackson Five (with Dick Clark action!)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=6uM9sn9WKy0

3. Sk8er Boi - Avril Lavigne
http://youtube.com/watch?v=H41mgl_u958

4. I Was Born to Love You - Queen
http://youtube.com/watch?v=uMGjN8-9IG0

5. Rock This Town - Stray Cats
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wh5IqEDLb2I

6. Highway Star - Deep Purple
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4FjBylFNA6k

7. Y.M.C.A. - Village People
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5Jmfix-st9U

8. September - Earth, Wind and Fire
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ky-m9cX6N9s

9. Canned Heat - Jamiroquai
http://youtube.com/watch?v=O_xa3m3XPxI

10. Material Girl - Madonna
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8K4dQ2kCiSo

11. La La - Ashlee Simpson
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZUeWqRzBPSU

12. You're the Inspiration - Chicago
http://youtube.com/watch?v=VqwBTk2razM

13. Survivor - Destiny's Child
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ABCXB69_bwE

14. Without a Fight - Hoobastank (with Naruto action!)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=KSx7kDbommc

15. Believe - Cher
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4BbeiKJ1DWw

16. Let's Dance - David Bowie
http://youtube.com/watch?v=30AVhf-ZLwM

17. Jumpin Jack Flash - Rolling Stones
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YZ_aAq_dHVw

18. Makes No Difference - Sum 41
http://youtube.com/watch?v=KX0t2BLDqv8

19. The Anthem - Good Charlotte
http://youtube.com/watch?v=QT0OoguAd3s

Interviews with the developers have revealed that at least one song (the final level song) has not been announced. This means that there are at least 20 levels in EBA (as opposed to 15 in Ouendan).

What's it look like?

Here's some screenshots:

You can also view full gameplay videos of the Babysitter (Walkie Talkie Man and Homeward Bound (Highway Star) levels on Easy, as well as partial videos of four other levels, here.

And if for some reason you'd like to see the commercial, it's here.

Where can I try it out?

Since it's a "Touch Generations" game, Nintendo may well put it on demo kiosks. However, if you already have a DS, you can access a DS Download Station in any store that has one and play a demo which includes a tutorial and the first half of the Babysitter level on Easy.

Chicago and Queen make me tempted to get it, but ****ing Avril Lavigne and Good Charlotte ruin it. Well, since they're covers hopefully they'll make them not as ****ty.

EDIT: Hey Klobber, watch the Chicago video and look at the video length. =)

They're covers, and you can hear them on IGN. Personally I wish they'd leave out stuff like that altogether, but as a "Touch Generations" title they're trying to appeal to as many demographics as possible with the variety here.

EDIT: I don't think Good Charlotte is on there, but Avril is.

Nice to see a relatively obscure Queen track like I Was Born To Love You show up in it (then again, it was used as a Japanese TV show theme).

Yes they are, their song "The Anthem" is on it.

And at least Bowie is on there too.

I think I was kind of repulsed by the IGN videos page. But I still want this game for "September", "You're the Inspiration", and "Canned Heat" at least.

I played a demo for this in Gamestop the other day. It was alright despite the music I was forced to play... difficult as hell, though...

I don't really care about the music too much, I love the idea and the game itself looks really fun, I will probably get it.

And Game Informer gave it a 6.75:

This is the same fine score they gave to Paper Mario 2!

To be honest, that guy just had a gripe with the fact that the touchscreen doesn't feel as intuitive with rhythm games as other button press rhythm games, but that's a matter of opinion and judging by gameplay videos I think it'd be enjoyable.

I wish I could remember their ridiculous gripe for Paper Mario 2.

Basically that it holds your hand too much and it's essentially a kids' game and too easy and blah blah blah

Game Informer was always a ****rag anyway.

Dang, I forgot it was coming out today! I had two exams so I was busy studying all day. Tomorrow, I'll see if I can't head down to Best Buy and maybe try to use that B2G1 Touch Genrations deal with this game.

Game Informer is an absolutely terrible magazine. It pains me to know that they enjoy the highest circulation of any gaming publication in the US. Really, though, the more I think about it, the more I just wanna avoid the gaming press altogether. Look at this schlock, they're whining about the most idiotic things. And their Paper Mario 2 review.... yuck.

QUOTE (Someguy @ Nov 6 2006, 06:40 PM)

Yes! For being Queen's most famous song, it surprisingly hasn't been used in any rhythm games yet.

QUOTE (Greliz @ Nov 6 2006, 06:23 PM)
If only they'd picked "Don't Stop Me Now" as the Queen song. =(

If only!

4 player single-card multiplayer as well.
