I was playing Yoshi's Island with my friend a while back, and saw me fighting the giant koopa boss. She said, "How do you beat him?" I reply, "Knock him over with eggs, then smash him on his stumach three times." She goes, "Typical three-hit Nintendo clich'e." Do you think that Nintendo has taken the boss health of three hits to the point of calling "Clich'e"?

A little bit, but that was an old game, they don't do that as much any more.

Didn't a lot of bosses in Yoshi's Island take more than 3 hits anyways?

Flip him over then strike his weakpoint for maximum damage.

Anyway, yeah, several Yoshi's Island bosses took more than three hits to die. Though it seems like nearly every boss in NSMB was killed with three stomps (I could be wrong).

Nah, Jeff. you're right. All bosses (excluding Bowser) required three hits.

But also think about more recent games: Super Mario Sunshine's bosses all required three hits on their weakpoint...

Well, so what?

Why would they want to change that number if they make it hard enough? (Which happened in Yoshi's Island, but not in SMS and NSMB)

Super Mario 64 was pretty much nothing but 3-hits, as far as I remember.

King Bob-Omb - 3 throws
Big Whomp - 3 butts
Bullies - The boss versions in MKDS require 3 falls
Stone Hand D00dz - 3 hits each
Wiggler - 3 stomps
Bowser - One bomb, two bombs, three bombs, four!

Cliché.

And yeah, they obviously are. Good characters turning out to be badguys for the win.

It's not really a remake, it's a port with added features for novelty value.

Nintendo has 3 hit kills, yes.
But the way HOW you hit an enemy is always different.
(NSMB not included)

So not cliché.

nsmb included ok yah so you can kill b-jr. in one hit with a mega shroom but still it's the average 3 hit kill if you don't and more if you use fire flowers

A lot of bosses these days are fairly cliche in terms of how you go about defeating them - there's always some repetitive pattern you have to follow in order to prevail, and I wish more games would break out of that mold and have each boss be drastically different from the other.

One of the reasons I don't like RPGs very much is that in order to defeat any boss or enemy you're forced to follow the same plebian pattern over and over again; attack, defend, item, summon, special attack. There is no VARIETY, which is something a "unique" battle system can't compensate for.

Mother 3 does a good job of standing out - each boss requires a completely different strategy in order to defeat, and there are times where you have absolutely no idea how to even damage it (although Boney's sniff ability gives you hints of how to successfully inflict damage).

There was a fangame idea a while back that might be a good Nintendo implementation. Instead of each enemy being able to be defeated by a stomp (and bosses by three), each enemy should have set hit points, and Mario should have a variety of moves to defeat the enemies with. It would eliminate the 1up chains in pointage, but would at least increase the amount of playtime.

So..basically...Castlevania with Mario mixed in. >_>

better yet add randomization to boss actions, a perfect candidate for this would be megaman and its endless roster of bosses with 3-step movesets

Then there's those bosses that require different strategies to be defeated but end up with you having to repeat the same pattern over and over, like in God of War
