Meanwhile, Eugene, Oregon's KMTR News is reporting that three men who had been camped out in front of a Circuit City waiting for the Friday launch of the PlayStation 3 were robbed early Thursday morning.

According to the station's report, the three had left the line temporarily, and were stopped by a pair of masked men as they passed a nearby Target. The two men led the trio behind the store and mugged them. Police used mall surveillance tapes to retrace the robbers' steps after the crime, and were able to recover some stolen goods, including a wallet.

This is the best launch day ever.

Should have seen it coming, what with the PS3's gigantic price per unit and the fact that the demand is so much greater than the supply.

Well of course it is; but I think the level of violence we're seeing over this is something they should be held accountable for. Demand was high for Nintendo DS when it launched, but there were enough units around Christmas that we weren't hearing about all these people getting shot, robbing stores, auctioning off the units, beating each other up, trampling each other as they run to reform lines outside Wal-Mart...

Look at Microsoft: they wanted to do the same thing and managed to pull of a good balance between "angry mobs" and "satisfied customers", but they still released a lot more than Sony is. If anything, blame it on the fact that Sony is completely incompetent and can't get enough PS3s made fast enough to catch up with the Wii's release date. If they can't create consoles that fast, you certainly can't expect them to have this kind of marketing foresight. -------------------- end of line

Yeah I don't think they did either, but it's more than a bit worrisome what's happening; I don't know how what they expected to happen, given they lie lie lie as usual releasing fewer and fewer units than they promised retailers, which of course are powerless to fix the problem; so then the customers aren't happy because in their mind it's like "I already paid!".

100,000 units in Japan (their strongest territory) makes no sense.
