Who knows.
PS3 doesn't look "doomed", but certainly its initial sales (also counting the fact that there were so few at launch) didn't give the push people in and out of Sony thought it would.
It's certainly a major concern to see whether PS3 will give off the shine that PS1 and PS2 did during their lives. And it will most definitely be quite a spectacular recovery if it does. Yet again, I think this is not a hard, but rather, challenging task for Sony, as most of the time the "birth" in the life of a console is the most crucial part and this will truly determine if another time, Sony will outsell Nintendo in the home console market. I don't think Sony's gaming department will completely die out; however, if the PS3 fails to impress the media and common public I can see a lot of money down the drain, especially with that current "next-gen" Blu-ray technology. And judging from Sony's previous hardware malfunctionalities with their consoles I hope the PS3 doesn't infernally suffer from critical glitches because that would just ease up the console wars and give 360 and Wii the lead.
As for the Wii, I didn't really see any bad expectations coming even from the time the Wiimote was announced; let alone the name, I think Wii in itself is quite an amazing console in terms of innovation and intuitive, interesting controls.
The one thing that worries me is that Nintendo might be betting a little too much on their own games and not so much on a reliable base of third party developers. If this is the case then we will soon see a strike of luck for Sony because Wii simply lacks a decent amount of third party games to cope with Sony's already gigantic library of previous third party titles. Hopefully, Nintendo already has at least a few third parties behind the scenes working on some (maybe!) new franchises that appeal to a wider market (remember; out there there still are some ****head "mature" Sony fanboys that can't enjoy a game like Super Mario Galaxy!) other than Nintendo veterans that will buy Wii just because they're Ninty veterans and have to. By "good" third party titles, I'm referring to the likes of Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz; but be this the case or not, I see light in Nintendo's future even if they still keep that (rather annoying) tactic of strongholding solely to their first party titles, because it will mean that the manufacturers of the console themselves will be using the capabilities of the Wii to the max, unlike some third parties which sometimes (take a look at some DS titles...) don't realize the console's true power and thus aren't able to make a decent game instead of some sloppily made piece of crap that looks like it took two weeks to be made.
