I'll close with this: given the momentum of the Xbox 360 right now and the strong reactions to the Wii's launch last weekend, the PS3 didn't come out swinging hard enough to cement its heralded position as king of the next generation this year. It's a long battle, of course, and Sony is well equipped to deal with it for the long run (as its PS One and PS2 victories have proven). But as the old saying goes, you only get one chance at a first impression -- and for this chance, the PlayStation 3 didn't dominate, it just showed up.

I, personally don't hate the PS3, but I will say that Sony just didn't live up the hype. nope.gif

Just read this article as well; it was an interesting little read although it does give Sony a lot of points in areas that I don't think consumers are too happy with. The question remains: Will things improve with them when better software comes out, and more consoles are available? So far there are so few people on this planet that even own a PS3 that would come to defend it.

I point to GameFAQs polls, numerous web sites message board activity, and the (oft scary) word of mouth the Wii is receiving; and the almost universal praise of the 360 by major gaming media. Sony just looks really really bad right now, and name brand recognition isn't taking them as far as they thought it would.

I wonder if outside of the technicality that got them there, Nintendo can keep this small second place lead they have over Sony?

Or is it just a case of lack of supplies holding the PS3 back from beating the Wii to a pulp?

Nonetheless, while the Wii has had alot of good buzz in the gaming community, it was almost surprising how the PS3 hype almost completely overshadowed it in the media.

Too bad, the Playstation 3 is in a lead that's as clear as its 1080p imagery.

Serves Sony right. I'm not saying this because I'm a Nintendo fanboy--I'm not one--...I'm saying this because Sony made some really bad choices.

Who knows.

PS3 doesn't look "doomed", but certainly its initial sales (also counting the fact that there were so few at launch) didn't give the push people in and out of Sony thought it would.

It's certainly a major concern to see whether PS3 will give off the shine that PS1 and PS2 did during their lives. And it will most definitely be quite a spectacular recovery if it does. Yet again, I think this is not a hard, but rather, challenging task for Sony, as most of the time the "birth" in the life of a console is the most crucial part and this will truly determine if another time, Sony will outsell Nintendo in the home console market. I don't think Sony's gaming department will completely die out; however, if the PS3 fails to impress the media and common public I can see a lot of money down the drain, especially with that current "next-gen" Blu-ray technology. And judging from Sony's previous hardware malfunctionalities with their consoles I hope the PS3 doesn't infernally suffer from critical glitches because that would just ease up the console wars and give 360 and Wii the lead.

As for the Wii, I didn't really see any bad expectations coming even from the time the Wiimote was announced; let alone the name, I think Wii in itself is quite an amazing console in terms of innovation and intuitive, interesting controls.

The one thing that worries me is that Nintendo might be betting a little too much on their own games and not so much on a reliable base of third party developers. If this is the case then we will soon see a strike of luck for Sony because Wii simply lacks a decent amount of third party games to cope with Sony's already gigantic library of previous third party titles.
Hopefully, Nintendo already has at least a few third parties behind the scenes working on some (maybe!) new franchises that appeal to a wider market (remember; out there there still are some ****head "mature" Sony fanboys that can't enjoy a game like Super Mario Galaxy!) other than Nintendo veterans that will buy Wii just because they're Ninty veterans and have to. By "good" third party titles, I'm referring to the likes of Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz; but be this the case or not, I see light in Nintendo's future even if they still keep that (rather annoying) tactic of strongholding solely to their first party titles, because it will mean that the manufacturers of the console themselves will be using the capabilities of the Wii to the max, unlike some third parties which sometimes (take a look at some DS titles...) don't realize the console's true power and thus aren't able to make a decent game instead of some sloppily made piece of crap that looks like it took two weeks to be made.
