I think it's fine as long as they're used properly.
Of course inserting +5MB MP3 into a game that took less than 20 minutes to do, is a No-No.

What's yer opinion?

MP3's are alright, modules like .mod or .xm or .s3m or .it and the like are better suited for fangames and can sound just as realistic

I almost never use midis anymore, because there just aren't any good midis of the songs I want to use. I convert them a lower quality file so they are smaller, and they work just fine.

I agree with ultramario.

I like a lot of MIDIs that can be found on vgmusic.com, but in some fangames it just seems like music that sounds just like in the official games would be preferable (like in the game I'm making for the comp, which I need to get down to work on like right now). But yeah, lots of MP3 music in a small or simple game is definitely unnecessary.

XM, IT, SPC, NSF.. All goes.
If you manage to create an USF Plugin for MMF2 or such, You'd have pretty excellent music with small size.

Someone should really make a plugin for MMF2 that plays these formats:
SPC
USF
VGM
GSF
MID (with DLS support).
Why DLS support for MIDIs? It would allow DS music. VGMTrans can export music in MIDI format, and it also exports DLS files of the samples used. You can play the MIDI with the DLS file applied, and it sounds just like the original!

It depends, really. If it's a short and low-quality game, I doubt huge-ass mp3s are really a good idea. If you really feel it neccesary, mp3s are pretty good, when reduced in quality. In fact, my minigame entry uses an mp3 for background music, but it's shortened so it;s not 34536345mb in size.

My not-yet-finished entry uses MP3 music, and I think (though I can't remember exactly) that it's still less than 4 MB in size.

I can't use MP3's.. they're too big a file to use and I don't know how to convert them into smaller ones. So when I look for MIDI's, I look for the cream of the crop! wink.gif

I do the same thing when I use MIDIs. I personally get sick of everyone using the old crap MIDIs from the old Mario games, so I try not to do the same.

Of course, for my larger projects, I've been venturing into the realm of using MP3s.
