QUOTE (Pucifur @ Dec 7 2006, 11:57 PM)
So elaborate a bit, how does this profoundly affect my life?  Am I a better person for knowing that there's water on Mars?

Discuss! Go, go, go!

Because water on Mars means there's a distinct chance that there could be life on Mars, which means there is life on other planets, which has all kinds of implications. It's huge news, and if we discover life there it's going to make a lot of people re-think their view of the universe (as well as probably make retarded conspiracy theorists scream and cry about how it's all a hoax and we've never even set foot on the moon).

Even if it's just single celled life, it's still huge news.

Then there are other things to consider, like how we're going to eventually colonize other planets. If there's water on Mars that makes it even more of an ideal planet.

It's just interesting news. If it doesn't affect you personally, that's all well and good.

I think the idea is in thousands of years time we do, when the Sun starts "eating" the planets as it runs out of energy. Then we move to one of Jupiter's moons, then one of Saturn's, then I think they said one of Uranus', then we all die.

This is unless we get hit by a meteor or something.

We could probably find water on other planets if we studied them as close as mars.

Thing is, Mars has no atmosphere, so you'll be needing a form of life that doesn't require heat or any gases to survive.

Of course, we might just find that on Mars, but eh.

It has an atmosphere, just a very thin one.

The next thing we know, there'll be martians lurking around, even if they are just single-celled organisms

The gravity of mars is too low to form an atmosphere; any possible particle that could help form an atmosphere is simply rises into space and oblivion.

Put micro-organism in them and wait a few 4 billion years for live to evolve.

Nothing that came from earth can live in mars. There's:

-no oxygen
-no useful resources
-extreme cold temperatures even lower than antartica's
-Sand storms
-Barren enviroments
-etc.

Only hoping that the life forms possibly found on mars are undergoing evolution would promote awesomeness.

All I know is that you can't make an atmosphere on Mars that would allow for human inhabitation. Remember: Mars wobbles madly on its axis, and it lacks a magnetic field. If you were to attempt, say, terraforming, you'd only get half of the planet changed, and then suddenly lose all of the work since you still lack the magnetic field and stable axis to uphold a hospitable environment.
