I'm just going to mostly copy-paste my SA thread about this...

In-game ads. To be honest, I haven't seen enough big examples of it to form an opinion of it - Battlefield 2142 was using placeholder art for them when I played the demo, and while there's some other known examples, I either haven't played them or forget their names right now.

Apparently Valve plans to test in-game ads out on Counter-Strike 1.6 in the near-future. The website CS Nation got a hold of Doug Lombardi and asked questions about it. Not everything was answered, but it's an interesting read.

QUOTE
CS-Nation: How do you address advertisements that don't fit into the atmosphere or environment of the game? For example, it probably wouldn't make much sense to see an ad for Listerine in the middle of Dust2.

Doug Lombardi: Counter-Strike levels aren't going to turn into Times Square or a Nextel Cup And now here they are! The most daredevil group of daffy drivers to ever whirl their wheels in the Wacky Races. Competing for the title of worlds wackiest racer. The cars are approaching the starting line. First, is the Turbo Terrific driven by P. We have control over what ads show up in Counter-Strike and how they are presented. So, well work with advertisers to figure out what kinds of things the Counter-Strike audience will be interested in and present them in a way that blends well with the game experience.

Any player who has spent a lot of time on Dust2 will already be familiar with what advertising will look like in the game world. Take a look at the Gamehelper.com logos on the walls that have been there since the map was first shipped.

And beyond low-res videocard ads out the window of Office?

QUOTE
CS-Nation: Beyond the advertisements, are there any other immediate plans for upcoming updates for either CS1.6, CS:CZ, or CS: Source?

Doug Lombardi: We just introduced the new dynamic pricing system to CS: Source, and were watching how that test plays out before we decide to extend it. Meanwhile, were working on some changes to the weapons in CS: Source (pistols, specifically) based on what weve learned from the pricing experiment. Were also working on some new voice chat features which will eventually apply to both versions of the game. We'll talk more about those things later.
Interesting... stash your deagles, people.
