Dann Woolf presents "What If?", Scenario #1

As most of us should know, Nintendo and Sony once worked together on a CD addon for the SNES. However, Nintendo dropped Sony like a bad habit at a conference, and Sony used what they learned to create the PlayStation. D'oh.

Now, what would happen if the two never worked together? Would Sony create the PlayStation anyway? Would Sony survive without the experience from working with Nintendo, or would the company fade away like Atari and all the other companies that got in the Big N's line of fire? And would another challenger step up to the plate?

Discuss. If it goes well I may think up a second What If? scenario.

Maybe Sony would have made the Playstation nevertheless, just later.

they were close to working together but the contract would have gave control of all nintendo's characters/franchises to sony, which is the main reason for the split..

sony still would have shot for the video game market eventually if they never even talked to nintendo but it probrably would have been slightly different

Keep in mind Sony used their experience from the joint venture with the big N to make the PlayStation. So no experience would mean...

This is a ridiculous proposition. First of all, Sony execs didn't 'learn' anything they couldn't figure out from Nintendo. The joint venture they were experimenting in did not get very far at all anyway.

As for Sony fading into obscurity; Sony is infinitely larger than Nintendo, and even with all their money troubles right now they're not going to close their doors so much as re-organize their corporate structure.
