Yes, it's the most over told family story. But it's told in such a different way with centering on spelling bees is that it's actually a blast to watch. I'd think that spelling bees would be a dry subject, but somehow this movie breathes life into them.
Keke Palmer is great as Akeelah and Laurence Fishburne is always great as the wise teacher. The only real complaint is the forced relationship of the young kids. If you've seen the movie you'll know what I mean. This is a very underrated film and I recommend it as a family film.

I've never really been a fan of Night's work. I think it was Klobber awhile back who said this movie was a train wreck. And I couldn't agree more.
The movie is slow, full of holes and didn't really make a ton of sense. I know it's not supposed to be realistic and a quick watch but it didn't keep my interest. I would not really recommend this movie to anyone. Maybe if you're into real deep and mythical story then you might enjoy it. But I didn't. The only good character was Harry Farber, the fictional geek.

I've heard a lot of good things about this movie. A lot of my family saw this movie and loved it. I finally saw it and can say I enjoyed it. I didn't think it was hilarious but it was a good family movie. Even if it got an R rating, which is due to language and drugs.
The film is original and full of fun twists and turns. The characters are great and developed perfectly. The ending was a bit stupid, but didn't feel out of place. I'd go see this movie for Steve Carell alone, but you should go see it because it's a great movie.
