Why not? Non solid objects can function as solid objects but solid objects can not function as non solid objects.

Example:

Non solid objects can be used as a floor just like a solid object, but they can also be used to make a what I call a "mystic floor" (the floor that you can go trough from below). Solid objects don't allow you to make a "mystic floor".

Sometimes I actually wonder why the option solid is there.

Spoilers:
To make it easier for novice users, who don't need mystical walls

Still, awesome topic.
Wouldn't have been able to make a better one.

@all: please keep in mind, that you need to experiment a bit, before you can use non-solid blocks effectively!
You need to do all the actions in the collision events yourself!
If you use non-solid walls, the program WON'T be able to do the "move_contact" and "place_free" function for you, so you need to check in the collision event: does Mario come from above/from below? does he come from left/right? and then you need to place him to a position relative to the wall. You need to manually set the speeds, etc.
Don't forget to put in the step event to check for a line below Mario, if there's a collision with a wall, to check for being in mid-air or not.

Why the hell should I do this?
Simple: If you want to have "mystical floors", this is UNAVOIDABLE.
(Only if you don't want any other object than Mario in your game, but who wants that?)

So please learn how to use non-solid blocks/walls and you will become a better programmer.

I can use as many solid objects as I DAMN well feel like using. >:(

In fact, I should make a game where EVERYTHING is a solid object.

The way how solid objects work is very glitchy. an object can't go though them and gets stuck if it has ANY collision actions with the solid object

I still use them, but very little.

Are you serious? PS. I'm not forcing you to make everything non-solid, I just want to mention it is better to use non-solid objects.

Seconded. They can be handy for then I'm lazy.

And these goddamn one-way walls are still giving me trouble >(

Solid objects are alright to use, I don't see what the problem is.

from now on i'm never going to assign backdrops as obstacles, and instead base collisions off of color-coded areas within an overlay

... which is a really awesome idea btw

Hear hear!

@Flipiberke: Besides jump-through-the-bottom platfoms, are there even any more benifits to non-solid objects? Solid objects are in Game Maker for a reason. As the help file indicates, "Collisions with solid objects are treated differently from collisions with non-solid objects." I will though acknowledge that solids can be annoying sometimes, but I'd rather live with them than without them.

First off all I want to say I don't force anyone to not use solid objects in GM. I'm just telling that I don't think they have any use.

But still I want to ask Mason, give me one situation were I can only use solid objects, and I can't use non-solid objects and I promise I'll get the user posted image icon out of my signature.

Somehow I know this is going to turn into a huge gang war between the solid users and the solid haters.

I use solids for stuff like walls, and other things that are actually, you know, solid.
