I agree. nod.gif I'm making one-way platform without Solid.

Seems we have taken it too far.
OR the OTHERS have taken it too far!

All we wanted to tell you is, that non-solid objects are simply MORE ADVANCED.
You can do everything with non-solids that you can do with solids, but you can't do some stuff with solids that you can do with non-solids.

Solid walls ARE in Game Maker, but they're in there, just for the same reason as DRAG AND DROP is in Game Maker. To make it easier for beginners.

If you want to create really good ENGINES (engines, not games), you need to use non-solid blocks.

Use solid blocks, but please don't complain then, if you can't do "jump-through platforms".

Bottom line is: if you want to be a good engine programmer, you should try to figure out how non-solid blocks work. Of course you can still use solids, because sometimes it makes it easier and faster (e.g. for an MGC or whatever), but you shouldn't say that solids are in Game Maker, because they're the non-plus-ultra.

Thanks for reading, and now I'd like you all to do a discussion, not a war.

I agree again. But I find this Flipiberke's Engine.

But still I want to ask Mason, give me one situation were I can only use solid objects, and I can't use non-solid objects and I promise I'll get the user posted image icon out of my signature.

Ok I'm seriously not an expert on the subject, not being a GM user but...

What you're saying is that solid objects have no use, but if you're going to code a non-solid to do EXACTLY THE SAME as a solid... what's the point? Why not just use a solid?

Non-solid might have uses for one-way platforms and the like, but if you're just gonna cause yourself extra aggro with no notable difference in results, why not just make it solid in the first place? It's just... easier, and more efficient.

Again I'm not an expert at all... Sorry if I'm entirely uninformed about the subject, but I only really have this topic to go on. ohmy.gif

Using non-solid objects help stop most glitches that occur with solid objects, most notebly Graphical glithches.

XD I wasn't trying to cause a war. Sorry. I agree with most of what you are saying EXCEPT "easier for begginers." Advanced users (not that I'm an advanced user) use solids too, don't they?

I can see non-solids being useful if you want one object to pass through something and another to collide with it.

They don't.

(and here it depends on what you call "advanced". For me, advanced defines people who work with code only, no D&D, and who take advantage of GM's full abilities, that is more or less of the following: scripts, data structures, particles, d3d, ...)
